Cole Koepke settles back in with Bruins after recovering from big hit delivered by friend and foe

Boston Globe30-01-2025

Coincidentally, Koepke and Raddysh are friends going back to their time together in the Lightning organization. Raddysh reached out to check on Koepke in the aftermath of the hit.
'We were together in Syracuse [of the AHL] for a couple of years and then back and forth in Tampa together, too,' said Koepke, who skated as the left wing on the fourth line against the Jets. 'So, I'm actually pretty good friends with him and, yeah, he did reach out and I talked to him a little bit.'

Koepke said hits like the one he absorbed are inevitable, especially given the speed of an NHL game.

'Plays happen quick. Hockey's a physical game, guys are going to hit you and you're going to hit guys and sometimes you're going to be on the bad side of the hit and it's just part of the game,' he said. 'You've just got to do a good job of trying to put yourself in good positions and brace yourself when it's coming.'

Koepke was quick to point out that there was no malice in Raddysh's actions.
'I don't ever think anyone's intentionally trying to injure anyone,' he said. 'So, with him reaching out and we were just talking through the play and kind of what happened. He wasn't trying to hurt me by any means. That's not the kind of guy he is. I was trying to get the puck out. He was trying to be physical doing his job as well. So, it's just unfortunate the way it played out, but there's no bad blood between us.'
Koepke ended up missing five games, returning to action

'I'm feeling good. It's never a fun situation when you're not able to play, but the training staff have done a good job helping when we get back into any shape and get healthy. And it's good to be out there with the team,' said Koepke, who went into Thursday's game with a career high seven goals and 12 points. 'It's unfortunate the way the [Sabres] game went, but regardless, it was nice to be back.'
Milestone for McAvoy in return
As expected,
Charlie McAvoy
returned to the lineup after missing seven games with a wrist injury.
McAvoy entered the game ― the 500th of his career ― leading Boston's defensemen with five goals and was second to
Mason Lohrei
in points with 20. He paired with Lohrei (3 goals, 23 points) against the Jets.
'It's great to have [McAvoy] back. He seems to be in really good spirits right now,' said interim coach
Joe Sacco
following morning skate. 'So, we're excited to get him back in our lineup and obviously help stabilize the backend for us.'

Brad Marchand
. Lohrei had been running the power play in McAvoy's absence.
'We like Charlie on his entries. He gets the puck in for us. That's been an area that we've struggled in with our power play,' said Sacco. 'Once we get it set up, we seem to have a little bit more success, so we're hoping Charlie can drive some of the entries for us, help us get in a little bit cleaner on the power play so that we can set up and create some more.'

Jets' Justin Fields Offers Positive Breece Hall Scouting Report

Jets' Justin Fields Offers Positive Breece Hall Scouting Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields is slowly getting acclimated to his new surroundings as minicamp continues. Advertisement At this stage of the offseason, it's all about dotting your i's and crossing your t's and getting to know your teammates. One whom Fields will be working closely with in 2025 is running back Breece Hall. Entering the final year of his deal and the subject of some trade speculation, Hall will be a Jet in 2025, and Fields' security blanket in both the run and pass game. And Justin already likes what he sees from Breece. "Breece is a ball player for sure," Fields said. "Everybody knows he can run, but what kind of surprised me is his natural hands. When I first started throwing with him, he has natural hands like a receiver. He's really just all around back, so definitely glad to have him on my team for sure." New York Jets running back Breece Hall (20) runs with the ball© Kevin R. / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Hall, as a receiver in his last two years, has totaled at least 50 receptions and 480 yards along with a handful of touchdowns, with his ability to catch and turn upfield a highlight. Advertisement With new head coach Aaron Glenn wanting the Jets to play a tough, physical brand of football, Hall will be central to that. His ability as a runner is well-documented, and now Fields is seeing how valuable Breece can be as a receiver. With many skeptics questioning the Jets' offense due to a lack of receiving weapons outside of Garrett Wilson, perhaps Hall can take his game to the next level as a pass-catcher. He's already catching the eye of Fields, so expect Breece to play a significant role for Tanner Engstrand in 2025, with his receiving skills being a key feature. Former Ohio State tight end Jeremy Ruckert responds to being reunited with Justin Fields

Former Ohio State tight end Jeremy Ruckert responds to being reunited with Justin Fields Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields seems to have found himself a new opportunity to seize a major role in the NFL with the New York Jets after signing a two-year deal with the club. A byproduct of that is that he gets a chance to reconnect with a couple of other former Buckeyes that he played with in Columbus. We've already heard from receiver Garrett Wilson on his excitement to play with the former Heisman Finalist and first-round NFL draft pick, but the electric receiver isn't the only former OSU player donning a Jets uniform. Former tight end Jeremy Ruckert, who played for Ohio State from 2018 to 2021, got to block for and catch passes from Fields on the banks of the Olentangy for two years. So yeah, he too has some history with the guy the Jets' brass hopes turns around the fortunes of the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets. Ruckert was asked by the New York media what it means to be playing with his college teammate again, and was excited more for the team than himself. "Any time you get a chance to reconnect with one of your teammates, whether it's in the League or college, it's great,: Ruckert told reporters. "I'm excited where we're going as a team and the culture we're setting, and I think he's (Fields) perfect for that role, and just these last couple of weeks to get back on the same page and get our timing right with all the guys. It's been special to be a part of that, but also kind of get the other guys rolling and continue to grow as a unit." If you are an Ohio State fan, there aren't too many storylines that jump out more than what Fields does in New York. If he can use his athletic gifts the right way and still find a way to stay poised and present in the pocket, we could see a budding star coming to light just a little later than we thought. How Jets' Steve Wilks is challenging Sauce Gardner to reach next level

New Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks gave cornerback Sauce Gardner a challenge when the two met after Wilks was hired. 'He's been a Pro Bowl player,' Wilks said. 'How consistent can he be to take it to another level? That's one of the things that I challenged him on Day 1 when we had our conversation. I felt like, and you guys feel the same way, that he's one of the top corners in the league, but that consistency of being that dominant player each and every week, that's what we're looking for and that's been his challenge this offseason. 'He's very gifted, and I told him sometimes your greatest strength is your greatest weakness. He's a guy that sometimes that 85 percent is still better than everybody around him, so his thing is, and I told him, compete against yourself. That's where he has to get better, which he will.' Gardner was first-team All-Pro in his first two seasons but did not have as strong of a season last year. He is eligible for a contract extension, and the Jets face a major decision on how much to invest in the star corner. One knock on Gardner in his career has been his lack of interceptions. Sauce Garnder runs a drill during Jets' minicamp practice on June 11, 2025. Bill Kostroun for New York Post He has three in three years, including one last year. Wilks said Gardner is working on it. 'That's finishing as we talked about, and he's been working on that for us,' Wilks said. 'Taking more time with the Jugs [machine] and getting extra catches in and understanding how to catch the ball away from your body just like a receiver would do. But I always say this, and I know there's a lot of talk about him, but he's only going to be as good as the guys around him, so it's all about trying to make sure that we all, particularly on the back end, pushing in the same direction.' Second-year WR Malachi Corley missed practice again Wednesday with an undisclosed injury. Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand talks with reporters on June 11, 2025. Bill Kostroun for New York Post Corley has missed a lot of time this spring, and it could cost him in a tight competition at wide receiver. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand said Corley will have to catch up in training camp. 'That's a great question really for him to ask, 'How do I get myself mentally caught back up, because I wasn't able to get the physical reps this spring?' ' Engstrand said. 'And ultimately, that's going to be what it is, because the other guys do, they have a handful of practices ahead of him and those physical reps. So, he's going to have to find a way to catch himself up with that stuff.' Rookie WR Arian Smith also did not practice Wednesday. LB Quincy Williams was on the field in uniform but did not participate in team drills. QB Justin Fields said he plans on getting together with the wide receivers and tight ends during the break before training camp.
