Independent producers pool $30,000 to boost Singapore shows and brand at Edinburgh Fringe

SINGAPORE – Six independent theatre producers have created a $30,000 initiative to spotlight Singapore works at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Known as the biggest arts marketplace in the world, Edinburgh Fringe 2025 takes place from Aug 1 to 25. Six Singapore acts have paid their way to the Scottish capital, presenting their shows to a global audience and harbouring hopes they will be picked up by international producers.
For the first time, they will have unity of branding under a 'Singapore Spotlight' umbrella – co-marketing on the same posters, meeting presenters and producers from other countries at Singapore Spotlight networking events, and even sharing house rental.
The initiative is started by Singaporeans in their 20s to 40s based both here and in Britain: Shien Hian Lim, Shaifulbahri Mohamad, Caleb Lee, Brent Tan, Joanne Tay and Syania Shaharuddin.
Shaifulbahri is the veteran with six shows at the Fringe Festival in the last 10 years under his belt. But everyone knows they have to compete with thousands of other creative works for eyeballs and are eager to bring their combined connections to bear.
Lim says over Zoom from Edinburgh: 'To come here as a first-timer, you don't know anyone here and it is very daunting. We provide that base and foundation of support, and point you in the right direction.'
In starting Singapore Spotlight, they noted how artists from other countries and territories banded together to amplify their presence, for instance the Taiwan, South Korean and Danish seasons, typically funded by their respective ministries of culture.
Lee says: 'It is definitely about strength in numbers. If you asked me what show was in the Taiwan season last year, I can't remember. But I can tell you for certain there was a Taiwan season.
'It is about putting the Singapore brand in Edinburgh as well as internationally. This benefits both Singapore artists going out and also for international artists to understand where and what Singapore is.'
In the true fringe spirit of building community, Singapore Spotlight secured sponsorship from local brands such as massage chair retailer Osim , food and beverage manufacturer Yeo's, sock designer Freshly Pressed Socks and hardware wholesale supplier Jitt Yi Sheng.
Others who supported by providing in-kind services are youth hub *Scape, public relations firm Tate Anzur, charity BinjaiTree and networking platform Singapore Global Network.
Singapore Spotlight is also a push for Singapore works travelling to Edinburgh to have more legs.
Shaifulbahri refers to the National Arts Council's (NAC) espoused efforts to internationalise its arts productions, which he feels has had limited success with Singapore and South-east Asian works continuing to be under-represented in international platforms.
The NAC's Our SG Arts Plan (2023 to 2027) and Our SG Arts Plan 2.0 both cited promoting Singapore artists internationally as a major goal.
'Artists spend so much money to come out here and you've got all these presenters from around the world looking for works to present back home. If the work just dies after the Fringe, there's so many missed opportunities,' he says.
The six works at Edinburgh Fringe under the Singapore Spotlight umbrella in 2025 are an equal mix of Edinburgh Fringe veterans and newcomers.
The three familiar names are playwright Jo Tan, who is taking on major venue Summerhall with her
one-woman exploration of gender identity, King ; Jonathan Goh with his acrobatics and juggling act; and stand-up comedian Sam See, collating two showcases The Asian Comedy Showcase and Off With Your Head.
The newcomers are sound artist Hee Suhui with her experimental audiovisual work III Behaviour; dance group Decadance Co's dark movement comedy The 11th Hour; and stand-up comedian Nebulous Niang's Slomosexual, a reflection of her life as one half of an inter-ethnic lesbian couple raising Gen Z kids in a conservative society.
Jo Tan, whose King is among 26 plays shortlisted for the Popcorn Writing Award celebrating fresh writing at the festival, says of Singapore Spotlight: 'It is so refreshing because in our country's relatively smaller landscape, things can sometimes feel competitive or even adversarial. Here, we can share knowledge and publicise each other, and we share otherwise daunting costs.'
These costs include accommodation, which she is splitting with artists from at least four different acts. 'It feels almost like a clan house for early immigrants to Singapore.'
Edinburgh Fringe greenhorn Hee says III Behaviour is her first production and also the first time she is touring – an attempt to 'see if my bodily experience could feel universal'.

Using contact microphones, she creates a soundscape from breath, pulse and touch in an intimate exploration of what it means to hear oneself. 'Singapore artists need more production and touring infrastructure: how to liaise with venues, manage shipping, situate a show, how to keep momentum going after the run.
'Without the right support, navigating this alone would be overwhelming.'
Asked if the Singapore Spotlight team hopes more official bodies like the NAC would step in to fulfil this role, the producers noted that their application to NAC for support this time was unsuccessful.
Beyond concerns about limitations on curation, Lee says there is also something creative and joyful about an organic group of people pulling off this project, with even Singaporeans working in cafes in Edinburgh volunteering to put up posters.
'Part of the Fringe is also about decentralising the arts. The Fringe was, after all, a resistance that came from the larger Edinburgh International Festival.'

TOKYO – In Tokyo, a man watches a woman slowly bind another with ropes attached to chains hanging from the ceiling. But this is no sadomasochism (S&M) bar. It is a workshop led by 'shibari' master Hajime Kinoko. He teaches the knot-tying techniques of Japanese bondage, untangling the practice from its associations with kink and emphasising instead art and aesthetics. 'I see attaching not only people, but also objects or spaces as a form of painting on canvas,' the 48-year-old said at his studio in central Tokyo. 'It's simply another type of expression.' Mr Kinoko discovered 'shibari' – the art of ropes – in the 2000s while managing an S&M joint in Roppongi, an area of Tokyo known for its nightclubs and bars. 'I wasn't particularly drawn to fetishism at first,' he said. 'At the time, the focus of BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism) was often on the dirty or degrading side, but I didn't see that part of it as necessary.' Mr Kinoko learnt how to tie a woman's body by watching others before establishing his own style 'based on beauty'. PHOTO: AFP The roots of 'shibari' date back to the Edo period (1603 to 1868), when feudal lords used 'hojojutsu' to tie up criminals. The practice took an erotic turn in the 20th century through Japanese painter Ito Seiu's illustrations and books by Japanese author Dan Oniroku, many of which became – like Double Rope Torture (1985) – pornographic movies. Another word for this in Japanese is 'kinbaku', but this refers to 'precise and restrictive techniques, such as wrists tied behind the back', Mr Kinoko said. ''Shibari' is a broader, freer term. There is no single definition.' The artist enjoys marrying the traditional heritage with an avant-garde approach and employing it in novel settings. In Tokyo's Shibuya district, he enveloped an egg-shaped house called the Natural Eclipse in blue rope like a spider's web, transforming it into a living sculpture. PHOTO: AFP 'It was the missing piece,' said the owner of the building, who agreed to the project after seeing another of Mr Kinoko's works. 'Today, passers-by stop to photograph it. It has become a place of interaction.' Mr Kinoko installed large cubes of red rope on top of a Tokyo shopping centre and erected a 'shibari' sanctuary at the Burning Man festival in the United States in 2017. 'Why not stretch networks of ropes around the Eiffel Tower?' he said with a smile. Mr Kinoko began offering workshops in London 20 years ago, before inviting fellow Japanese 'shibari' masters to introduce their art to the European public. ''Shibari' then spread very quickly,' he says. But international success has not been without risk. 'When I saw people tying without knowing what they were doing, I realised it was necessary to teach. 'Shibari' can be dangerous,' he said. Reputed to be a hard taskmaster, he founded his own 'shibari' school, Ichinawakai, where he trains a new generation of students, around 40 per cent of them women. One of them, French student Sen, travelled from France to learn the techniques. 'I discovered him in Paris during a performance. He has freed himself from the original dynamics,' said the 25-year-old. Students must pass a 10-stage course, master a variety of knots and guarantee the safety of those they are tying up. 'You have to know how to communicate, make things beautiful and not hurt. That's what I try to convey. I feel responsible,' Mr Kinoko said. 'I want 'shibari' to transform society. Because, deep down, 'shibari' is a way to create connections.' AFP

SINGAPORE - Sing60 Music Festival, a two-day music extravaganza dedicated to local music in the SG60 year, is set to take place at Fort Canning Park on Dec 6 and 7. With performances over two stages, the line-up features over 60 home-grown acts from various genres and generations. The main segment, Homegrown Icons, at a Fort Canning Green stage, includes both contemporary pop acts such as singer-songwriters Benjamin Kheng, Charlie Lim, lullaboy, Shye, Shabir, Imran Ajmain, Shazza, Iman Fandi, Dru Chen, Glenn Yong, as well as the Talentime All-Stars, a group comprising seasoned singers Ann Hussein, Clement Chow, Faridah Ali, Gerry Rezel and Max Surin. The segment also features Mandopop singer Mavis Hee, singer-songwriter Corrinne May and hip-hop artiste Lady Kash. Bandwagon Sessions, also at Fort Canning Green, features indie and alternative music acts ranging from established ones like The Great Spy Experiment and Caracal to newer bands such as Carpet Golf and Motifs. The third segment, Bunker B2B, takes place at Fort Canning's historical World War II bunker Battlebox and features pairings of different generations of electronic music artistes in back-to-back DJ sets and live performances. Covering genres ranging from house and hip-hop to techno and experimental, the line-up includes veteran names like Aldrin, Ollie Des and Aresha, as well as rising acts Deformed and Taz Angullia. Festival Village, a marketplace co-curated with F Zine, the youth-focused media brand formerly known as Female magazine, will showcase a mix of home-grown food, artisanal crafts, fashion and lifestyle brands. Sing60 is driven by a pay-it-forward ethos. Every ticket sold will fund a youth from an underserved background to attend the event. Another Sing60 segment spotlights young performers who are benefactors of Gift A Guitar, a charity initiative that provides underserved youth with guitars and music lessons, led by arts and culture non-profit The Rice Company Limited (TRCL) and charity organisation The Music Society, Singapore. As it turns out, like other visitors to the Little Red Dot, she misheard 'Berhati-hati di ruang platform,' which means 'mind the gap' in Malay. Please, people from Singapore, tell me what 'Happy Happy' means,' said Ms Thiloy in her video. 'I have it in my head. Like it's stuck in my head and I don't know what it means, the Happy Happy,' she added, which everyone who has ever had an earworm is likely to relate to. So far, her post has received over 2,000 comments, and many TikTok users have been more than happy (see what we did there) to oblige her with answers. One wrote, 'It's 'Hati-hati' (ha-tee ha-tee), it means be careful. Not 'happy happy'.' To this, the post author replied, 'Hahaha, oh ok 😭🙏🏻 I'll be careful then.' Another had an even more complete explanation, writing, 'So in Singapore when (the announcement) tells you, 'Please mind the yellow gap' in English, there are 3 more languages besides English, which are Mandarin, Malay: 'Berhati-hati di ruang platform', and last in Tamil.' One noted that in places such as Chinatown or Kovan, the announcement is even in Hokkien as well. A TikTok user provided a YouTube link as an example: Another took the opportunity to deliver a mini-lecture on languages in Singapore: 'The national language of Singapore is Bahasa Melayu (Malay), as stated in the Constitution of Singapore. However, Singapore has four official languages: Malay (national language) English (main working and administrative language) Mandarin Chinese (spoken by the Chinese community) Tamil (spoken by the Indian community) While Malay holds symbolic importance, used in the Singapore national anthem, 'Majulah Singapura', English is the most commonly used language in government, business, and education.' She is not the first visitor to the city-state to have heard 'happy happy' instead of 'Berhati-hati'. In 2014, a travel blogger from the UK wrote , 'There are 3 things I like about the Singapore Mass Rapid Transport (MRT),' one of which was 'when you stop at a platform, a lady says 'Happy Happy'.' 'Causing amusement every time, these two words seem to make everything better.
