Researchers make concerning discovery after investigating bays: 'They're a threat to everything'
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin recently found that microplastics in Texas bays, particularly Matagorda Bay, are not accumulating in sediments as expected. Instead, they are being transported into the Gulf of Mexico.
The study, published in Environmental Science & Technology, analyzed 122 sediment samples from Matagorda Bay, East Matagorda Bay, and San Antonio Bay. Findings showed relatively low concentrations of microplastics in the samples — only tens to hundreds of particles per kilogram of sediment, which is hundreds to thousands of times less than similar bayside environments around the world. This data was entirely unexpected, according to the researchers — especially with a plastic pellet factory directly on Matagorda Bay.
The researchers attribute the findings to shallow depths in the respective bays, along with windy conditions and frequent hurricanes, which prevent microplastics from settling. And if these microplastics don't settle, they get swept into the Gulf — which sends these tiny particles of plastic on an even more destructive journey.
As the researchers outlined in the study, once in the Gulf of Mexico, these microplastics absorb environmental chemicals and accumulate in marine life. This can pose risks to the broader ecosystem and human health, as these microplastics enter the food and water supply.
"It's good that the bay is not a microplastic dump or hotspot," study co-author Cornel Olariu, a research associate professor in the Jackson School's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, said in a statement. "But the bad thing is they move around much easier than we thought … and they're a threat to everything up to us."
According to the Stanford Report, about 10 to 40 million metric tons of microplastics are released into the environment each year. Microplastics never disappear from the environment, contaminating waterways, soil, air — everything. While scientists are still learning exactly how microplastics impact animals, people, and the planet, it's clear that these pervasive plastic particles cause long-term damage.
A 2020 study found that humans inhale approximately 16.2 bits of microplastics every hour. That's the equivalent of a credit card per week. Harvard Medicine highlights that microplastic exposure is linked to a wide range of human health impacts, including reproductive issues, cancers, inflammation, lung and liver problems, hormone disruptions, and changes to the gut microbiome.
Understanding how and where microplastics travel is key to effectively tackling their environmental impact. This particular study marks the first time researchers have examined the prevalence of microplastics in Texas bay sediments, providing crucial baseline data for further research.

As a next step in the research, the authors are developing models to trace the pathways of Texas bay microplastics, hoping to see where they collect if not in the bays. In the meantime, there are global efforts to reduce plastic usage to help combat microplastic prevalence. But with the prevalence of plastic in our lives and our environment, completely avoiding microplastics is not only unlikely — it's impossible.

Serving craft beer, playing mahjong, stacking shelves and boxing, the dozens of humanoid robots at Shanghai's World AI Conference (WAIC) this weekend were embodiments of China's growing AI prowess and ambition. The annual event is primed at showcasing China's progress in the ever-evolving field of artificial intelligence, with the government aiming to position the country as a world leader on both technology and regulation as it snaps at the United States' heels. Opening the event on Saturday, Premier Li Qiang announced China would set up a new organisation for cooperation on AI governance, warning the benefits of development must be balanced with the risks. But in the cavernous expo next door, the mood was more giddy than concerned. "Demand is currently very strong, whether in terms of data, scenarios, model training, or artificial construction. The overall atmosphere in all these areas is very lively," said Yang Yifan, R&D director at Transwarp, a Shanghai-based AI platform provider. This year's WAIC is the first since a breakthrough moment for Chinese AI this January when startup DeepSeek unveiled an AI model that performed as well as top US systems for an apparent fraction of the cost. Organisers said the forum involved more than 800 companies, showcasing over 3,000 products -- the undeniable crowd pleasers being the humanoid robots and their raft of slightly surreal party tricks. At one booth, a robot played drums, half a beat out of time, to Queen's "We Will Rock You" while a man in safety goggles and a security vest hyped up a giggling crowd. Other droids, some dressed in working overalls or baseball caps, manned assembly lines, played curling with human opponents or sloppily served soft drinks from a dispenser. While most of the machines on display were still a little jerky, the increasing sophistication year-on-year was clear to see. The Chinese government has poured support into robotics, an area in which some experts think China might already have the upper hand over the United States. At Hangzhou-based Unitree's stall, its G1 android -- around 130 centimetres (four feet) tall, with a two-hour battery life -- kicked, pivoted and punched, keeping its balance with relative fluidity as it shadowboxed around a ring. Ahead of the conference's opening, Unitree announced it would launch a full-size humanoid, the R1, for under $6,000. - 'Digital humans' - Most high-tech helpers don't need hardware though. At the expo, AI companions -- in the form of middle-aged businessmen, scantily clad women and ancient warriors -- waved at people from screens, asking how their day was, while other stalls ran demos allowing visitors to create their own digital avatars. Tech giant Baidu on Saturday announced a new generation of technology for its "digital humans" -- AI agents modelled on real people, which it says are "capable of thinking, making decisions, and collaborating". The company recently ran a six-hour e-commerce broadcast hosted by the "digital human" of a well-known streamer and another avatar. The two agents beat the human streamer's debut sales in some categories, Baidu said. Over ten thousand businesses are using the technology already, the department's head Wu Chenxia told AFP. Asked about the impact on jobs -- one of the major concerns raised around widespread AI adoption -- Wu insisted that AI was a tool that should be used to improve quality and save time and effort, which still required human input. And and he says that the first time he met you, he was shocked by your vision of the future of Internet technology and also that he wished that you've met earlier. What I find interesting, though, is that you actually had to convince him and others at Alibaba that cloud was the right business. Yeah, because, you know, fundamentally, I was there. The club business is very different, Internet business, fundamentally. Okay. So but thinking about, you know, almost 20 years ago, the the core Internet, the mindset is everywhere. Okay. So for the cloud computing is not that fit in that sense. Yes, that's one thing. The second is concubine is very different intimate business. I always said to my career, I'm very lucky to working on the first. It's a technology not like any other business. You know, they started with a business to business to business and and technologies to help the business, okay. With a compete in that case. So you have to have the technology first. That's the key. So is a technology. The second, you know, not every not every technology could become that business. Okay. That's why I always said only, you know, only 1% technology could be an A business. So that's the hard part for for, for the people to really understand. So at the very beginning it is hard. Yeah. I think something that we see right now is, is certainly money that's being directed at strong talent. Yeah. And and there's stories, of course, in Silicon Valley, we see people that are getting hundreds of millions of dollars. And yeah. What do you think about that? I think it's a I don't think it's that it's the let's see. It's a typical way of doing thing. They'll get out of that. The reason very simple. You know, example, when I when I study that, that they're able to cut out, you know, the first thing I did that was in Tucson eight the first I did it to get to Silicon Valley and to try to get tenant healthcare. And and and after talking to a lot of people and realize actually we don't have much a tenant there because new. Okay yeah so and also with some of the tenants it just too expensive and too expensive basically means okay you don't know whether the cannabis is there when is high when you hired these people. So it's really about innovation. So when you're in the early stage of innovation, I don't think a tenant is a problem because you know, they have the only thing you need to do is to get the right person. Not really is expensive person because if the new business, if this is true innovation, that it basically means the tenant and nobody cares about them. Okay. And I was working working on that. So for the today, what happened for the lack of matter is because they are very much a focus on the existing success of the business and existing. It's average all the technology that's the that that's that's, that's my view. Okay. So I think we have a tremendous opportunity to look at technology nobody knows to there and these talent these are current but but these are I can't say it's cheap but but it's it's available for you. Okay. So that's really about a vision, you know, where you want to where you want to go. And there's a lot of similar scenes, you know, happened during the last 20 years. Also, whenever everybody knows that these are talent and it's better for you not to Getty.
