Kaizer Chiefs target Themba Zwane in a 'tricky situation'
Kaizer Chiefs have a history of poaching Mamelodi Sundowns veterans. They did it with Gaston Sirino last offseason, and early signs suggest Themba Zwane could be next in line.
The 35-year-old playmaker, arguably South Africa's greatest talent, has long been the Masandawana glue, guiding the Tshwane giants to their last seven consecutive league titles.
It's been over five months since Zwane donned Sundowns colours, ruled out with an Achilles injury during Bafana's AFCON qualifiers. Mshishi's absence has hardly dented the Brazilians season, who sit twelve points above title challengers Orlando Pirates.
According to reports, the club, alarmed by Zwane's injury in the latter stages of his career, are apprehensive about offering a contract extension as they look to future stars, namely Jayden Adams, for the future.
Kaizer Chiefs, reportedly keen on the Bafana icon, will be licking their lips as contract talks between Sundowns and Zwane go sour.
'Do you remember that the talks had started? Even after the injury they continued but at the moment they have stalled and it doesn't look good,' a Siya source revealed
'They are in limbo though it doesn't mean it's over yet. It will depend on what goes on until the end of the season. But they wanted him to be part of the Club World Cup which happens as the contract comes to an end. It's a tricky situation but his future at the club seems to be coming to an end as things stand now.'
An additional source reaffirmed Zwane's uncertain future, saying, 'It's not like the club wants to throw him away. They could do it like Hlompho Kekana or Tiyani Mabunda while they bring in young players to take over from him.
'There are a number of youngsters from the DDC and other youth structures who the club want to introduce and with the downsizing of the squad in mind they would release experienced players and Mshishi could be one of them and that's what could affect his contract talks.'
