Twenty-six-year-old Lamnunthem Singson, who was one of the two crew members from Manipur and killed in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, was the sole earning member of her family, which had faced the brunt of the ethnic violence in the northeastern state.She had last talked to her widowed mother over the phone on June 11, her cousin said on Friday.Singson told her mother that she would fly to London on Thursday and wanted to sleep early the previous night, he said.The third child among four siblings, Singson was the "only daughter and their widowed mother had struggled much to raise all of them", her cousin Lun Kipgen said."The 26-year-old was the sole earning member of the family. Her eldest brother is unemployed and suffering from a chronic disease, while two other brothers are studying," Kipgen told PTI.Though unwell, her eldest brother is already on his way to Ahmedabad, while another brother and a cousin went from Kangpokpi to Nagaland's Dimapur, and will go to the Gujarat city, he said.Kipgen said, "We are devastated by the news. Her mother is in deep shock and refused to eat since the crash reports surfaced." Air India authorities called Singson's family late on Thursday and said her body was yet to be identified, he claimed.Singson was among the 242 people onboard Air India Flight AI 171 , which crashed minutes after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon."There has been no survivor except one passenger," Kipgen said."Singson last talked to her mother on Wednesday around 11 pm. She had said that she would fly to London the next day and wanted to sleep as early as possible because she had to report for duty early on Thursday. Singson and her mother held routine prayers over the phone. They used to pray jointly over the phone regularly before sleeping," he said.Singson belonged to a Kuki family whose members had to flee their homes during the ethnic violence in the northeastern state, her cousin said."Her family members, including her three brothers, had fled their home in Imphal during the ethnic strife and are now staying at a rented house in Kangpokpi district," Kipgen said.The residence of Singson's family in Imphal's Old Lambulane area is near the Manipur Rifles complex and the Raj Bhavan "When ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, Singson was not in the state, but her family members, along with other Kuki families, shifted to Kangpokpi," another family member said.Twenty-year-old Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, another crew member from Manipur, was onboard the London-bound flight that crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday. 1 2 3 Kolkata: While only a few buses on route 223 are presently being tracked on the "Where Is My Bus App", an entire fleet of 106 buses plying on three routes – 45, 45A, and 45B – can be tracked on the app beginning next week. Over 84 buses out of 106 have installed new smartphones for this purpose. Training was completed on Saturday at Garia. The transport department has set July 22 as the cut-off date for complete data of bus workers on four other routes – K1, 219, 79B, and L238. These buses will be integrated into the platform the same day. A Durga Puja deadline is being pursued to bring all routes under this app. Once tracked through the VLTD system, both transport department officers and cops will also know if the buses are speeding using the app that all 45 route bus drivers will install in their smartphones. Top officials told them that action would be taken on sergeants if evidence with specific complaints reaches them. DC (Traffic) Shrikant Jagannathrao Yeilwad discussed passenger feedback with bus transporters about complaints of conductors charging "excessively" and forcing passengers to get off "at a spot of their choice". Cops warned that strict action will follow if these basic traffic rules are flouted. "All bus drivers are required to scan their vehicle's designated QR code and install the official tracking application prior to commencing their trips," said Titu Saha of City Suburban Bus Service. Two dead, one critical in bus-car crash
Haveri: A fatal accident involving an NWKRTC bus from Chikodi depot of Belagavi district and a car occurred near the Kumarapattan bypass in Ranebennur taluk on Saturday. The collision resulted in the death of two individuals, Vijay Annappa, 37, and Praveen Girish, 36, both residents of Davanagere city. Kottesh Abaloor suffered serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Davanagere. The accident took place when the transport bus, travelling from Athani to Davanagere, collided with the car on the bypass. Police reports indicate that the bus driver, who was operating on this route for the first time, lost his way and attempted to return via the service road on National Highway 48 near Kumarapattan bypass. The collision occurred when the bus was attempting to get back onto the national highway from the service road, with the carhitting its rear section. DRI arrests Air India crew member for smuggling gold from US to India, mastermind too nabbed
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested an Air India crew member for allegedly working for a gold smuggling racket and smuggling gold from the United States to India. The DRI also arrested the mastermind of the racket and seized smuggled gold worth Rs 1.41 crore. Acting on specific information, DRI officials on Friday intercepted Girish Pimpale, 42, who had arrived from New York on flight AI-116, near the exit gate after he crossed the customs green channel at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. On his examination, the DRI officials seized two pieces of paper on which handwritten calculations regarding the purchase of gold were found. This bolstered DRI's suspicion of Pimpale's involvement. Hence, he was subsequently placed under interrogation in which he reportedly admitted his role in the smuggling activity. He also showed a pouch containing 1373.2 grams of foreign-origin gold (worth Rs 1.41 crore) on the side of a sofa placed near the baggage services area in the international arrival hall of Mumbai International Airport, which was subsequently seized, sources have said. Pimpale's further investigation revealed that one Rakesh Rathod was supposed to receive smuggled gold from him, as he is the mastermind running the racket. Rathod was subsequently arrested on Saturday. Mastermind offered AI crew Rs 2 lakh on every 1 kg of smuggled gold Explaining how the racket was being operated, another source said that Rathod would ask Pimpale to buy gold in the US, make payment in cash, smuggle it to India and give it to him, as there is a huge profit margin. Since crew members are not examined, taking advantage of the same, Rathod decided to rope in Pimpale for the smuggling job. Probe has revealed that Rathod offered Pimpale Rs 2 lakh on every 1 kg of smuggled gold. He would also arrange cash in the US using some hawala channels for Pimpale to buy gold there. Recently, Rathod arranged USD 150,000 in the US for Pimpale to buy the gold for smuggling purposes, the source added. Further investigation has revealed that Rathod and Pimpale have known each other for the past year, and he allegedly accepted smuggled gold from Pimpale twice in the past. Rathod has a criminal past. He was previously booked by the customs in a gold smuggling case by Mumbai customs in 2020. The DRI officials are further investigating the matter and are trying to find out details of other members of the racket and also the source of funds used in purchasing the gold. Both the accused have been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act.
