Manipur unites in grief, across the ethnic divide
GUWAHATI: Divided by ethnic strife for more than two years, Manipur has united in grief in the wake of the June 12 crash of Flight AI-171. Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups, yearning for peace, have mourned the deaths of both 20-year-old Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, who is part of the Meitei community, and 26-year-old Lamnunthem Singson, a member of the tribal Thadou community, in equal measure. The pair were among the 10 cabin crew members of Air India's London-bound flight, which crashed seconds after take-off from Ahmedabad. 'Huge loss for all' 'Both were full of life, serving with dedication and pride. Their sudden passing is a huge loss for their families, friends, and for all of us back home. May their souls rest in peace and may their loved ones find the strength to get through this unimaginable pain,' former Manipur Chief Minister, Nongthombam Biren Singh, posted on X. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum, which has been seeking a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people since the ethnic conflict with the non-tribal Meiteis broke out in May 2023, said it was pained by the crash that killed 241 people on board, including the two crew members from Manipur. The tribal Thadou Students Association issued a statement with the photos of both Ms. Sharma and Ms. Singson to 'express heartfelt condolences to both bereaved families' while assuring necessary assistance to them during this difficult time. 'Two daughters of our soil' The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, which upholds Meitei pride, said it stands in deep solidarity with the families who lost 'two precious daughters of our soil'. A spokesperson of the Meitei Heritage Society said: 'In death, we are all the same. A tiny State with a population less than many big districts of India, divided on narrow ethnic lines by a few vested interest groups.' Ms. Singson was among those who were displaced from Manipur's capital, Imphal, during the peak of the ethnic conflict. She and her family relocated to Kanggui in the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district. Grieving families 'She was the sole breadwinner of the family for the past few years,' her widowed mother, Nemnelihing Singson, said. She said she raised her daughter and three sons with difficulty since their father passed away years ago. Air India recruited Ms. Sharma in Imphal three years ago, while she was studying for an undergraduate course. 'She worked from Mumbai,' K. Khenjita, one of her relatives, said from Imphal. Her last message before take-off: 'I'm going to London. In a few minutes, we'll take off. We may not be able to talk afterwards.'

The families of Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma and Singson Lamnunthem, from Manipur in the east of the country, have been left devastated by the horror news. 241 of the 242 passengers onboard tragically died when the aircraft, bound for Gatwick Airport, crashed into the densely populated Meghani area at around 1.40om local time yesterday. One of Singson's family members heartbreakingly shared that their last conversation was brief and the cabin crew member said she was flying to London. Originally from Old Lambulane in Imphal West, Singson had moved to the Kangpokpi district after she was displaced by a continuing conflict in her home town which has raged since May 2023. Having joined Air India's cabin crew in 2023, her family had also been forced to relocate due to the violence. Her family said they are anxiously waiting official confirmation about her fate but Indian authorities have already confirmed a British man was the sole survivor of the terrifying crash. Local media revealed Kongbrailatpam family, in the Thoubal district of Manipur, had been left too grief-stricken to speak following the tragedy. Local politician Surjakumar Okram visited the family home and said: "We are still trying to trace Nganthoi." The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed just moments after it took off and terrifying footage caught the moment it fireballed. Shortly after take-off, the crew issued a "mayday" distress call, indicating an emergency situation. The captain, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who had 8,200 hours of flying experience, desperately said: "Mayday…no thrust, losing power, unable to lift." However, no further communication was received from the aircraft after the initial alert. Flight tracking service Flightradar24 reported that it lost the signal from the aircraft just seconds after it became airborne. The only survivor for the shocking air disaster was British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. He described how the lights one the plane "started flickering" before it hit the ground. The 40-year-old, who said he sat in seat 11a, told the Hindustan Times: "When the flight took off, within five to 10 seconds it felt like it was stuck in the air. Suddenly, the lights started flickering – green and white – then the plane rammed into some establishment that was there." He added: "I don't know how I survived. I saw people dying in front of my eyes – the air hostesses, and two people I saw near me … I walked out of the rubble."

OHA: ‘Alarming' rise in syphilis during pregnancy contribute to infant health issues
PORTLAND, Ore. () — Officials with the Oregon Health Authority said they're 'deeply concerned' with a shocking rise in the number of syphilis cases during pregnancy, leading to serious health complications for infants. Congenital syphilis is a form of sexually transmitted infection that is passed down from the pregnant mother to the baby, according to the . According to OHA, the number of such cases in the state went from just two in 2014 to 45 in 2024, 'a staggering 2,150% increase,' officials said. Students learn philanthropy through Schnitzer Cares This comes as sexually transmitted infections have been stabilizing in the state in recent years, overall. In addition, overall rates of syphilis infections in Oregon have decreased along with national trends. Despite this, rates of syphilis during pregnancy have increased at an 'alarming' pace, officials said. As a result, more infants are being affected by this preventable disease. 'Congenital syphilis cases remain concentrated in urban areas, but we're seeing a growing number of syphilis cases during pregnancy in rural and frontier counties,' said Pete Singson, M.D., OHA's HIV, STD and TB medical director. 'Half of the 2024 congenital syphilis cases were outside the Portland metro area.' Officials said some of Oregon's most marginalized communities have also been disproportionately affected, including pregnant people in Black/African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and Hispanic/Latino populations. However, the disparity is not inherent to the ethnicity of these groups but rather due to systemic racism, poverty, houselessness and stigma, Singson said. OHA is now recommending that doctors conduct universal screenings for syphilis for pregnant people, in accordance with guidance from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. 'With coordinated action, increased awareness and commitment to equitable care, we can end this crisis and protect future generations of Oregonians,' Singson said. NBA's Portland Trail Blazers are going up for sale Congenital syphilis can bring considerable risk for newborns, with the potential to affect nearly every organ and cause death in severe cases. For the mothers, untreated syphilis during pregnancy can cause miscarriages, growth abnormalities, premature birth and even fetal death. OHA said one of their primary is to increase awareness and education for preventable diseases, even for doctors. Due to syphilis' historic low prevalence, some healthcare providers are inexperienced with diagnosing syphilis, making it that much more challenging to combat the epidemic.
