Two major Scottish city earn honours of being in the top 100 cities of Europe
The list was topped by London, followed by Paris and Berlin
Two major Scottish cities have received significant international recognition, with a major new report placing them among the leading cities in Europe.
The report, "Europe's Best Cities in 2025" by Resonance Consultancy, advisors on economic development, highlights a notable surge for Scotland's two largest cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh, both climbing into the top 30.
Glasgow with a metro population of 1,831,000 is now ranked as the 28th best city in Europe. This represents a substantial advancement, jumping 33 places from its 61st position in the 2024 rankings and reflecting a period of significant progress for the city.
Delving into the report's sub categories, Glasgow was ranked 20th for Livability, 39th for Lovability, and 50th for Prosperity.
Resonance stated that Scotland's biggest city "powers to its Top 100 ranking on the strength of its education," pointing to its sixth place globally for educated citizenry and its world renowned university, founded in 1451, which is the fourth oldest in the English speaking world.
The consultancy also noted that "start ups hungry for cheap space and talent are drawn to the city's working class authenticity over pricier European capitals."
The city's cultural landscape also garnered praise from the researchers, who observed that "it's not like Glasgow has gone corporate."
The report highlighted Glasgow as being "the home of Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland," adding that the city "is still buzzing from its 2020 designation as the UK's top cultural and creative city by the European Commission."
Edinburgh, with a metro population of 894,000, also achieved a strong ranking, entering the top 20. The Scottish capital was named the 18th best city in Europe, moving up from 28th place last year.
The report provided more detailed rankings for Edinburgh, placing it 13th for Livability, 20th for Lovability, and 38th for Prosperity.
The report noted Edinburgh was a "long overlooked European capital" which now "shines bright and welcomes the world once more." Resonance highlighted that the city "has long enchanted creative souls with its UNESCO World Heritage designated Gothic architecture, moody weather and the legacy of the literary masters who've flocked here for both."
Edinburgh's thriving arts programming was also a key factor, supported by the esteemed University of Edinburgh and its population ranking as the sixth most educated citizenry in Europe.

This has encouraged investment in the city's hotel sector, including the 244 room W Edinburgh within the significant St James Quarter development.
The report also mentioned the substantial £2 billion West Town development, a landmark project that will create a new district featuring 7,000 homes, two schools, retail and community facilities, a 300 bed hotel, and 300 student apartments.
Resonance Consultancy operates internationally, advising on tourism, real estate, and economic development. Their city rankings are based on a comprehensive analysis that incorporates statistics, user generated reviews, social media activity, and online content to quantify and benchmark a city's quality, reputation, and competitive identity.
The top ten cities listed in the report were London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam, Vienna, Prague, and Stockholm. The full report is available online.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the UK screen sector raises 'significant legal, ethical, and practical challenges' such as the use of copyrighted material being used without the permission of the rights holders, a report has warned. Other issues highlighted by the British Film Institute (BFI) report include the safeguarding of human creative control, the fear of jobs being lost as positions are replaced through the use of AI, and investment in training in new skills. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad High energy consumption and carbon emissions, and the risks to creative content around biased data, are also described as being of concern. The report, which has been carried out in partnership with CoSTAR universities Goldsmiths, Loughborough and Edinburgh, analyses how the screen sector is using and experimenting with rapidly evolving generative AI technologies. It warned that the 'primary issue' was the use of copyrighted material – such as hundreds of thousands of film and TV scripts – in the training of generative AI models, without payment or the permission of rights-holders. 'This practice threatens the fundamental economics of the screen sector if it devalues intellectual property creation and squeezes out original creators,' the report said. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad But it added that the UK's strong foundation in creative technology – as it is home to more than 13,000 creative technology companies – means that the UK screen sector is well positioned to adapt to the technological shift. Getty Images The report – titled AI in the Screen Sector: Perspectives and Paths Forward – said generative AI promises to democratise and revolutionise the industry, with the BBC, for example, piloting AI initiatives. Meanwhile, projects such as the Charismatic consortium, which is backed by Channel 4 and Aardman Animations, aim to make AI tools accessible to creators regardless of their budget or experience. It said this could empower a new wave of British creators to produce high-quality content with modest resources, though concerns about copyright and ethical use remain significant barriers to full adoption. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The report sets out nine key recommendations it suggests should be addressed within the next three years to enable the UK screen sector to thrive in using AI. These include establishing the UK as a world-leading market of IP licensing for AI training, and embedding sustainability standards to reduce AI's carbon footprint. It also calls for structures and interventions to pool knowledge, develop workforce skills and target investments in the UK's creative technology sector, while it urges support for independent creators through accessible tools, funding and ethical AI products. The BFI's director of research and innovation, Rishi Coupland, said: 'AI has long been an established part of the screen sector's creative toolkit, most recently seen in the post-production of the Oscar-winning The Brutalist, and its rapid advancement is attracting multimillion investments in technology innovator applications. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'However, our report comes at a critical time and shows how generative AI presents an inflection point for the sector and, as a sector, we need to act quickly on a number of key strategic fronts. 'Whilst it offers significant opportunities for the screen sector such as speeding up production workflows, democratising content creation and empowering new voices, it could also erode traditional business models, displace skilled workers, and undermine public trust in screen content. 'The report's recommendations provide a roadmap to how we can ensure that the UK's world-leading film, TV, video games and VFX industries continue to thrive by making best use of AI technologies to bring their creativity, innovations and storytelling to screens around the globe.' Professor Jonny Freeman, director of CoSTAR Foresight Lab, said: 'This latest CoSTAR Foresight Lab report, prepared by the BFI, navigates the complex landscape of AI in the screen sector by carefully weighing both its transformative opportunities and the significant challenges it presents. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'The report acknowledges that while AI offers powerful tools to enhance creativity, efficiency, and competitiveness across every stage of the production workflow – from script development and pre-production planning, through on-set production, to post-production and distribution – it also raises urgent questions around skills, workforce adaptation, ethics, and sector sustainability.' Katie Price sends son Harvey back to college early after he 'smashes' £3k TV
Katie Price previously revealed that Harvey is "on the verge of a heart attack" after tipping the scales at 30 stone Katie Price has revealed that her son Harvey had to return to college earlier than planned after he wrecked her telly. The ex-glamour model took to Snapchat to recount the episode in which her eldest boy "smashed" the £3,000 set. Harvey, aged 23, left his mum gobsmacked when his tantrum resulted in the need for a fresh TV. The mother of five relayed the tale to her social media fans before explaining to her son the repercussions of his behaviour. In the video, Katie captured Harvey, who is visually impaired due to septo-optic dysplasia, a brain development disorder, and also has autism and Prader-Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that can lead to overeating. She described being roused by the noise of the telly breaking at six in the morning. In the footage, Katie, 47, enquired: "What has mummy just heard?" To which Harvey calmly responded: "Smashing the TV." Asking more about what happened, Harvey claimed something on the screen had annoyed him. However, she later expressed scepticism to her followers, saying nothing was probably on the screen at the time, reports the Mirror. Katie then informed Harvey: "You was going to college tomorrow to get some new meds [medication], but now when are you going? You are going now." A downcast Harvey uttered: "Oh god," as his mum clarified that she needed to send him back so she could sort out a new telly for the house. She labelled the whole scenario as "sad". Later, Harvey said sorry to the former glamour model and promised it wouldn't occur again. Katie insisted to her son: "Well you've got to go to collage now and get some meds." Katie commemorated Harvey's 23rd birthday last month with a heartfelt display of affection. She posted a lovely snapshot on Instagram showing her and Harvey cosying up in bed before his birthday festivities. On Bank Holiday Monday, Katie shared her delight over Harvey reaching another milestone on her Instagram stories. The charming post featured the pair lying cheek-to-cheek in bed, having a leisurely day relaxing at home. Brimming with anticipation for the celebration ahead, Katie said: "Bank holiday cuddles before lots of celebrations tomorrow." It comes amid Katie's transparency about Harvey's escalating health issues as he tipped the scales at 30 stone. In a frank conversation with her sister Sophie on The Katie Price Show, Katie did not shy away from discussing the gravity of their circumstances. "He's just under 30st and that's huge," she disclosed. "He's on the verge of a heart attack. He won't have a long life if he carries on putting more and more weight on." Katie then revealed that they are actively collaborating with a medical team to attempt to improve his health. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
