Glasgow ranked in top 30 of best European cities
The city was placed 28th — the third highest in the UK — in new rankings released by Resonance Consultancy. Glasgow's entry states the city powers into the top 100 on 'the strength of education', as the 'planet's #6 spot for educated citizenry' and a world-renowned university — the University of Glasgow. It adds tech start-ups hungry for cheap space and talent are 'drawn to the city's working-class authenticity over pricier European capitals, even though the business investment metrics have yet to reflect the influx'. READ MORE: Nicola Sturgeon objects to illegal HMO as locals complain about 'sex party' noises The city ranks 94th for GDP per capita and 42nd for large companies headquartered in the city, and the report adds Glasgow is 'among the UK's fastest-rising property markets and new hotels are planned for the rest of the decade'. 'But it's not like Glasgow has gone corporate,' it states, ranking it in the top 25 for culture, and adding: 'This is the home of Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland, and Glasgow is still buzzing from its 2020 designation as the UK's top cultural and creative city by the European Commission.' London came in at number one on the list while Edinburgh took 18th position. Dublin is at 22. Cllr Aitken said: 'Glasgow's top 30 ranking in the list of Europe's Best Cities is another remarkable endorsement of our ongoing transformation as a city working to address the legacies of our post-industrial history and recognition of the strides we continue to make — on our streets and in our neighbourhoods and on the international stage. 'Resonance's rankings of the world and Europe's best cities carry genuine influence and credibility. They inform global investment decisions, economic development and international tourism. 'We know that our universities and reputation as a centre of culture and creativity have been critical to Glasgow's profile. But I'm particularly pleased to see distinct attributes including our authenticity and values have been recognised as key selling points for our city.' Glasgow has previously been listed in the world's top 100 cities by Resonance Consultancy, an advisor on tourism, real estate and economic development. The top 10 cities in Europe were London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam, Vienna, Prague and Stockholm. Glasgow was between Zurich (27) and Krakow (29). Edinburgh and Glasgow were both named in the top 30 this year. Coming in at number 18, the Scottish capital was hailed by researchers for its "Gothic architecture" and arts and culture scene. It was ranked sixth for its world-renowned university and second for its air quality. Resonance Consultancy said: "Edinburgh has long enchanted creative souls with its UNESCO World Heritage-designated Gothic architecture, moody weather and the legacy of the literary masters who've flocked here for both. "But a growing appreciation of the city's arts programming (long powered by the storied University of Edinburgh and the sixth-most educated citizenry in Europe) has inspired hotel investment to accommodate tourists and talent. "The renovated Scottish National Gallery project reopened two years ago to showcase the Scottish collection right in the heart of the city, while the upstart Hidden Doors Festival takes over unused spaces for art shows for a third year. "The city's world-famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe will be bigger than ever this year, fuelled by increased federal funding." Meanwhile, the city of Glasgow was named the 28th best city in Europe by researchers. It was ranked sixth for educational attainment and fourth for air quality. Inside little-known seaside spot right next to the country's most iconic sites Resonance Consultancy praised its "working-class authenticity" and thriving culture scene. They said: "Glasgow powers to its Top 100 ranking on the strength of education, with the planet's #6 spot for educated citizenry and a world-renowned university founded in 1451, the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world (ranked #14 in Europe). "The University of Glasgow counts economist Adam Smith and U.S. Founding Father James Wilson as alumni. And the world is taking notice. "Tech start-ups hungry for cheap space and talent are drawn to the city's working-class authenticity over pricier European capitals, even though the business investment metrics have yet to reflect the influx. Glasgow ranks #42 in our Large Companies subcategory and a middling #94 for GPD Per Capita. "Still, the city is among the UK's fastest-rising property markets and new hotels are planned for the rest of the decade, with the recently opened The Address Glasgow now welcoming guests. But it's not like Glasgow has gone corporate. "This is the home of Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland, and Glasgow is still buzzing from its 2020 designation as the U.K.'s top cultural and creative city by the European Commission." Elsewhere, a tiny seaside town with stunning beaches was crowned the best place to live in Scotland. The Sunday Times recently revealed its annual list of the top places to live in Britain. North Berwick in East Lothian was hailed for its unbeatable combination of lovely beaches, quality schools and thriving independent businesses.

Britain's 15 ‘best' cities to live in 2025 named by experts - see how Edinburgh ranks
It comes as the latest report by the highly-respected Resonance Consultancy was published. Resonance's annual rankings quantify and benchmark the relative quality of place, reputation and competitive identity for the continent's major urban centres. In ranking the performance and perception of Europe's Best Cities for 2025, Resonance analysed the principal cities of metropolitan statistical areas with populations of more than 500,000 (according to Eurostat, Demographia and National Statistical Offices, our population sources). They determined the top cities in Europe using a combination of core statistics and user-generated data from online sources such as Google, Tripadvisor and Instagram to measure quality of place when it comes to experiential factors. In total, 100 cities feature on the list – but here we focus on the top 15 British cities on the list, ranking them in order. 18 British cities have been named in the 100 best in Europe for 2025
At Time Out we are no stranger to a good city ranking. We've covered everything from the world's best cities for food to Britain's best beach towns and the planet's coolest neighbourhoods. This week a new ranking for 2025 arrived on the block, naming Europe's best cities. Resonance Consultancy's annual list is here, and it's worth paying attention to. The consulting firm's reports are considered among the most comprehensive city rankings out there – the latest one dives into more than 180 European cities, rating each one according to three factors: liveability, lovability and prosperity. We're pleased to say that this year 18 out of the top 100 cities were British. For the third year in a row, Resonance named London as Europe's best city. The UK capital clinched the top prize thanks to its global audience and appeal to students, entrepreneurs and tourists. The report mentioned Heathrow Airport's record-breaking year, and Gatwick's recent £236 million upgrade. It also lauded our theatres, museums, culture and landmarks, with a shoutout to the much anticipated Camden Highline. Also making the top 100 was Edinburgh in 18th place. The Scottish capital was praised for its Gothic architecture, top arts programming, luxury hotels and of course, the Fringe. Glasgow followed in 28th place, thanks to its well-educated residents, abundance of tech start ups and cultural chops, being the home of the of Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland. Two major Scottish city earn honours of being in the top 100 cities of Europe

The report, "Europe's Best Cities in 2025" by Resonance Consultancy, advisors on economic development, highlights a notable surge for Scotland's two largest cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh, both climbing into the top 30. Glasgow with a metro population of 1,831,000 is now ranked as the 28th best city in Europe. This represents a substantial advancement, jumping 33 places from its 61st position in the 2024 rankings and reflecting a period of significant progress for the city. Delving into the report's sub categories, Glasgow was ranked 20th for Livability, 39th for Lovability, and 50th for Prosperity. Resonance stated that Scotland's biggest city "powers to its Top 100 ranking on the strength of its education," pointing to its sixth place globally for educated citizenry and its world renowned university, founded in 1451, which is the fourth oldest in the English speaking world. The consultancy also noted that "start ups hungry for cheap space and talent are drawn to the city's working class authenticity over pricier European capitals." The city's cultural landscape also garnered praise from the researchers, who observed that "it's not like Glasgow has gone corporate." The report highlighted Glasgow as being "the home of Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland," adding that the city "is still buzzing from its 2020 designation as the UK's top cultural and creative city by the European Commission." Edinburgh, with a metro population of 894,000, also achieved a strong ranking, entering the top 20. The Scottish capital was named the 18th best city in Europe, moving up from 28th place last year. The report provided more detailed rankings for Edinburgh, placing it 13th for Livability, 20th for Lovability, and 38th for Prosperity. The report noted Edinburgh was a "long overlooked European capital" which now "shines bright and welcomes the world once more." Resonance highlighted that the city "has long enchanted creative souls with its UNESCO World Heritage designated Gothic architecture, moody weather and the legacy of the literary masters who've flocked here for both." Edinburgh's thriving arts programming was also a key factor, supported by the esteemed University of Edinburgh and its population ranking as the sixth most educated citizenry in Europe.
