The 2025 America's Best Cities list is here—see which city came out on top

Time Out26-06-2025
Start spreading the news: New York City has once again snagged the title of America's Best City, topping Resonance Consultancy's prestigious 2025 ranking for the ninth year running. The Big Apple is on a winning streak and it's not just because of the pizza.
In a moment when American cities are grappling with everything from climate volatility to housing crises, New York stands tall—literally and figuratively—claiming the No. 1 spot across all three of Resonance's key metrics: Livability, Lovability and Prosperity. In short, that means the city is thriving, dazzling and making money while it's at it.
New York ranks in first place for both culture and landmarks, fueled by a comeback of Broadway, blockbuster museum exhibits and more than a few Michelin stars. The city welcomed nearly 65 million visitors in 2024, and while international travel is projected to dip this year, NYC is betting big on 2026's FIFA World Cup Final and major infrastructure upgrades to turn the tide. With a skyline that's still growing, a hospitality sector revving back to life and a talent pool that's as deep as its subway tunnels, New York isn't just back—it never left.
'This recognition is a testament to the enduring appeal of the five boroughs,' said New York City Tourism + Conventions CEO Julie Coker, noting that the city's cultural and economic vibrancy are still drawing the world in droves.
Elsewhere on this year's list, New York's West Coast cousin Los Angeles claimed the No. 2 spot: "While wildfires, water scarcity and housing affordability remain challenges, the macro bet is clear: a once-in-a-lifetime convergence of mega-events, climate-friendly rail, adaptive reuse policies and institutional capital is resetting Los Angeles's value proposition," reads the ranking. And rounding out the top three is Chicago, IL, which is "firing on all cylinders" as of late with "an expanding talent pool and relative affordability."

Hollywood star made massive life change after his body 'gave up'in near-death e

Jason Momoa has shared details of an unsettling surfing incident that endangered his life. The American actor, 45, first rose to fame starring on Baywatch: Hawaii in 1999. Earlier this week he spoke about his love of Hawaii, where he was born and then returned to for college after his family had relocated to Iowa when he was a baby. 'I love other places, and I would probably live in other places more, but this just feels like home,' he said. However, Jason has now also spoken about a near-death experience that also sparked him to make a massive life change. During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, he told hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, that he once nearly drowned while surfing with friends off the coast of Maui. He recalled they paddled 'about 13 miles down the coast' and ended up 'almost a mile offshore'. However, after the leash that connected Jason to his surfboard snapped, he was left facing '10-foot Hawaiian waves'. 'It's so windy on Maui, and so the board just went. I couldn't even see it anymore,' he said. Although he was 'trained pretty well' for rough ocean conditions, he 'took quite a few to the head' as the waves hit. 'So, I was stuck in this crazy spot, which is probably the outer reef, and unknown to me, I was really on the outer reef, and they couldn't see me, and I had my paddle, and I was waving it, and they couldn't see me. And the waves were so big, it basically took my shorts off they were so big,' he said, 'Like I literally gave up, and I'm screaming inside, and my foot just hits the outer reef.' 'I dig my feet into the coral, and I'm literally in the middle of the ocean, and I'm just, I could barely put my lips above it just to breathe and get a break, but I had already given up. So, it's like, you've already given up and died and have a second chance at it.' He said one of his friends came to the rescue, but it was 'brutal' getting out to safety, adding that his feet were 'covered in blood'. 'My daughter at that time was three months old. I just — I lost it, I was like 'Oh s***'. Although Jason's 'arms and legs gave up', one of his friends was then able to come and help rescue him. Jason said he used to smoke two to three packs of cigarettes a day before the experience. What unfolded also led Jason to quit smoking altogether. 'And we get in, and I used to smoke. I used to smoke like, two, three packs a day,' he admitted. 'I couldn't stop for my kids. Couldn't stop for my ex. I couldn't stop smoking. And the moment I came out, I never smoked again. I just died. I tried, I tried, but I couldn't do it again because I just gave up. I gave up my life.' Jason, who shares daughter Lola, 18, and son Nakoa-Wolf, 16, with ex-wife Lisa Bonet, said that he 'was pretty hard on myself that night' after getting home safely. 'I did a lot of stupid s*** and I just really was pissed at myself for the position I was in and probably tortured myself even more for the stupid s***that I did. So, I don't know. It was a bit of a hard learning curve, but I feel like I've always had that where it's just like my learning curves are pretty hard on me,' he explained. The actor is currently promoting his new Apple TV Plus series Chief of War, which tells the story of the unification of the Hawaiian Islands from an indigenous perspective. More Trending Speaking to Metro about the show, Jason explained how it enabled him to explore his roots and bring an awareness to his culture. 'I just want [viewers] to embrace it. Really, just seeing what happened in our islands. I think people come and they don't know what happened to our people. We want to be seen,' he said. View More » 'There's a lot of change and a lot to bring back of a culture that was… Our language is banned from us and we're getting it back. A lot of our art…we're part of America and I don't think anyone really knows anything about us.' Got a story? Khamzat Chimaev leaves UFC legend stunned after showing off insane strength

The undefeated star is set to compete in his first UFC title fight on Saturday - and preparations are clearly going well after fans were left stunned by his power Khamzat Chimaev has wowed fans after he was filmed completely manhandling former heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. ‌ 'Borz' is set to compete for his first crack at a UFC title this weekend against reigning middleweight king Dricus Du Plessis. Chimaev comes into the showdown off the back of a stunning first round submission win over former champion Robert Whittaker last October. ‌ The undefeated sensation has been untouchable since making his professional debut back in 2018. The 31-year-old is known for his ruthless and relentless wrestling, capable of taking anyone down on his day. After moving up from welterweight, many fans have wondered just how powerful Chimaev is. ‌ Ahead of his clash with Du Plessis, 'Borz' left fans shocked after he was filmed picking up and manhandling Cormier - a former heavyweight champion - with ease. 'DC' retired back in 2020 following back-to-back defeats to Stipe Miocic. Despite switching the gloves for the microphone, the ex-fighter-turned-pundit is still a force to be reckoned with, and it takes some doing to easily drag the 46-year-old around freely. In a video uploaded to social media, Chimaev and Cormier shared a brief interaction outside the fighter hotel before engaging in a bit of playful wrestling. "You a big guy now, huh?" Joked Cormier. The American seemed to regret his choice of words after Chimaev quickly rushed towards the UFC legend and started to rag-doll 'DC' and swing him around up in the air as if he was a lightweight. Thankfully, the pair were all smiles at the end and shared a warm embrace. "Holy s***. Holy s***. This f****** guy, man. Holy s***. What the f*** was that?" Said Cormier. The 46-year-old has fought many iconic names during the peak of his powers, including Miocic, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, Alexander Gustafsson, Anthony Johnson and Dan Henderson, but he insists no one has ever manhandled him like that. "First time in my life somebody has picked me up like that! What was that?" Cormier said before re-entering the hotel. Fans were quick to rush to the comments section and offer their verdict on the footage. "Khamzat is going to ragdoll DDP," wrote one user. "Had his legs doing the little kid kicks," replied another. "This broo picked up DC like nothing. CRAZY!" Another fans commented, while another replied: "Dude might ragdoll DDP like he did (Kevin) Holland." ‌ Another fan replied: "Damn, DDP is screwed, lol." Another user gave a confident prediction, stating: "Khamzat will destroy ddp." Another joked: "Bro is tossing him around like a teddy bear," while a separate comment reads: "I wouldn't be surprised if Khamzat dismantles DDP with one takedown after another. He's a complete package power, technique, and fight IQ all rolled into one. Once he gets his grip, it's like being trapped in quicksand. every move you make just drags you closer to the end." Ahead of this weekend's showdown, there were rumours that Chimaev might hang up the gloves for good should he emerge victorious, but it appears he has shut down retirement rumours. In an interview with ESPN, he said: 'Yeah, I've seen Caio said... I don't know where he hears those things. ‌ 'I need money bro. This is not enough, just to go for the one title. Hopefully if I don't get injured or some stuff, gonna defend the belt or fight for other belt in Abu Dhabi, as well." The 31-year-old has vowed to compete beyond UFC 319 as he targets success in multiple weight classes. 'I work with a new coach and talk to him about going down again to 170lb. He said gimme a couple months and I'm gonna make it. I don't know who is the champ there, this Australian guy would be a good fight for me," he continued. 'Go down, fight with him as well, take the belt there. If I go up, there is Ankalaev and Alex Pereira, they're fighting now. Whoever's winning, I can fight for that belt, as well.' When is Khamzat Chimaev vs Dricus Du Plessis? UFC 319 - headlined by a middleweight title fight between Chimaev and Du Plessis - will take place on Saturday, August 16 and is being held at the United Center in Chicago. The early prelims are scheduled to get underway at around 11pm Saturday night UK time, while the prelims will start at around 1am Sunday morning UK time. The main card is due to get underway at 3am Sunday morning UK time. In the main event, Chimaev will make the walk to the cage first at around 5:30am Sunday morning UK time, with Du Plessis set to follow immediately after. The action will be shown on TNT Sports and discovery+ in the UK, with the early preliminary rounds available on the UFC Fight Pass.

Band 'devastated' after being forced to pull out of Reading and Leeds

An American band has announced they will no longer be playing Reading and Leeds Festival due to money woes. The 2025 music festival is being held this month, with some of the headliners including Hozier, Chappell Roan, The Kooks and Bring Me the Horizon. However, one act has now shared they've had to pull the plug on their set. Sharing the news in a statement on Instagram, House of Protection wrote: 'We are devastated to announce that we will no longer be performing at this year's Reading & Leeds Festivals. 'Most of the funding to make this short trip possible was coming from our performance at the Heavy Music Awards, which unfortunately has been cancelled due to unforeseen and serious health issues affecting a key member of their team. 'Our condolences go out to that team member during this challenging time.' They continued: 'We are deeply sorry to disappoint those who were excited to see us. 'Unfortunately, we simply don't have the resources to make this happen at the moment. 'Your support means everything to us, and we want to assure you that we are already looking forward to making it up to you in the near future (Spain as well). This decision was not easy for us.' However, they ended by telling fans they would be returning to the UK in October to tour with fellow band, Architects. Reacting to the cancellation, many people threw their support behind the band. 'It's crazy that a band this amazing can't keep up with its career for financial reasons. This business sucks. Deep deep love for you guys,' Marco commented. 'So thankful I got to see you at Download, but Reading and Leeds won't be the same without you, hope everyone's okay and doing the best they can. Devastated,' Alex shared. 'Absolutely gutted – missed you at download because of clashes, was looking forward to reading! Will have to catch you another time! Know how rough it is for indy artists,' Christina added. House of Protection formed just last year. Its members – Aric Improta and Stephen Harrison – had originally began their music careers in other bands including Fever 333, Night Verses and The Chariot. They've described their music style as 'Atlanta trap to UK trip-hop, post-punk and alternative and art-rock'. More Trending Previously speaking to DIY about coming together after being part of different bands, the pair explained. 'We're in this for the long haul – we're going to outrun everyone,' they said. In coming months, they are due to play in Amsterdam and London before touring Australia. Got a story?
