PetChem swings to RM18mil net loss on forex impact, despite higher revenue
In a statement today, PetChem attributed the loss primarily to unfavourable foreign exchange movements.
Despite this, the group's revenue rose three per cent year-on-year to RM7.7 billion in the quarter.
"This is driven by higher average prices of urea, methanol, and polyethylene as well as improved sales performance in the specialties segment," it said.
PetChem said its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (ebitda) rose 26 per cent to RM892 million.
The increase was driven by improved product spreads for urea, methanol, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and olefin derivatives, alongside lower operational costs.
The group said its olefins and derivatives (O&D) segment managed to recover from utilities supply disruptions that affected several plants in Kertih, as well as reduced production at Pengerang Petrochemicals Company Sdn Bhd due to feedstock unavailability.
"These external issues, combined with the limited uplift in product prices amid industry oversupply, resulted in the O&D segment recording a 4 per cent decrease in quarterly revenue to RM3.5 billion," it said.
Managing director and chief executive officer Mazuin Ismail said the improvement in ebitda reflects the group's ongoing efforts on operational excellence with commendable plant utilisation rate achieved by its commodities business.
Moving forward, Mazuin said the group will closely monitor these developments and assess broader implications on the overall market dynamics.
"To maintain our resilience and competitiveness amid the current industry downturn, we remain focused on driving excellence.
"Our unwavering commitment to safe and efficient operations across all facilities continues as we are currently undertaking repair and maintenance activities at several O&D and F&M plants.
"At the same time, we are strengthening customer relationships to better meet their evolving needs, while upholding strict financial discipline and prudent capital spending," he added.

Hartalega's Q1FY25 Profit Drops 60% To RM12 Million
For the current quarter ended 30 June 2025 (Q1FY26), Hartalega recorded revenue of RM553 million, representing a decrease of RM31 million or 5% compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year (Q1FY25). The decline was primarily due to a 5% reduction in average selling prices (ASP). In addition, lower sales volume across key markets further impacted revenue, mainly driven by front-loaded inventories held by U.S. customers, deferred orders in response to ongoing tariff developments, and continued pricing pressures in non-U.S. markets, particularly from intensified competition mainly from Chinese manufacturers. The Group reported an operating profit of RM7.7 million for the quarter, a decrease of RM26.9 million compared to Q1FY25. This decline was largely attributable to the lower ASP, the strengthening of Ringgit Malaysia, and less favourable cost absorption resulting from lower capacity utilisation. As a result, the Group registered a profit after tax of RM12 million, down RM19 million from RM31 million in Q1FY25. The higher profit relative to operating profit was mainly due to gains from the disposal of assets at the Bestari Jaya facility.

Negeri Sembilan rare earth elements to boost state revenue from 2027
SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan state government anticipates rare earth elements (REE) to significantly enhance state revenue starting in 2027. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun revealed that two approved mineral tenement licenses are projected to generate RM18 million. 'REE deposits identified in districts like Kuala Pilah and Jelebu are expected to play a major role in state income,' Aminuddin said during the State Legislative Assembly session. He was responding to a query from Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (BN-Rantau), presented by Kamarol Ridzuan Mohd Zain (PN-Paroi), regarding progressive revenue strategies for the B40 group. Additional revenue streams include water commodity transformation and service charges promoting economic sustainability. The state government's quit rent amendment (PCT) and parcel tax adjustments under the National Land Code and Strata Titles Act could raise RM400 million in quit rent revenue by 2029. To further bolster income, the Forestry Department will introduce conservation fees for selected Forest Eco Parks. Citizens will pay RM3 per entry, while non-citizens will be charged RM6, with exemptions for children, seniors, and persons with disabilities. Ulu Bendul Rimba Eco Park will pilot the initiative. 'The fee is designed to be affordable, ensuring minimal burden on the B40 group while funding forest conservation and facility maintenance,' Aminuddin explained. The move aims to improve recreational safety and comfort while supporting environmental efforts. The state remains committed to a fair and inclusive quit rent system, prioritizing welfare initiatives for all residents, particularly the underprivileged. - Bernama

Its technical properties make it suitable for supply both within Russia and to international markets as a raw material for the production of nonwoven the past two decades, the use of polypropylene-based nonwovens (spunbond fabrics) in the hygiene and medical sectors has grown considerably. Since consumers value the softness of materials that come into direct contact with the skin, manufacturers have traditionally relied on special additives to enhance the softness of polypropylene has successfully developed a proprietary polypropylene copolymer that provides the required softness without the use of foreign additives that are no longer available in the Russian market. The development team also aims to further improve the material to eliminate the use of phthalates, additives facing stricter regulation in several countries.
