
Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah dispute: Allahabad HC hears both sides
In the matter of Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah dispute, counsel for Hindu side on Friday argued in the Allahabad high court on an application in which prayer was made that Shahi-Eidgah mosque be mentioned as 'disputed structure' in the present proceedings which was opposed by Muslim side.
The controversy is related to the Mughal era Shahi Eidgah mosque in Mathura, which is alleged to have been built after demolishing a temple at the birthplace of Lord Krishna.
Justice Ram Manohar Narain Mishra is hearing 18 suits filed by the Hindu side seeking possession of land and removal of the Shahi Eidgah structure, restoration of temple and a permanent injunction.
The Allahabad high court has fixed July 4, 2025 as next date of hearing in the case. Earlier, at one stage on August 1, 2024, the high court had rejected applications of Muslim side challenging maintainability of suits of Hindu worshippers and held that all suits of Hindu worshippers are maintainable.
In the August 1 order, the court had also held that these suits are not barred by Limitation Act, Waqf Act and Places of Worship Act,1991, which prohibits conversion of any religious structure as existed on August, 15,1947.
The controversy is related to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb-era Shahi Eidgah mosque at Mathura, which is alleged to have been built after demolishing a temple at the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Trichy streets want to let go caste identities
Trichy: In what is seen as a drawback for a city known for its secular fabric, at least 30 prominent roads and streets in Trichy continue to bear caste and communal identities. While a few of them with neutral names were recently renamed by Trichy corporation to honour renowned personalities from the city, there are demands to rename streets with caste and communal names on priority and avoid getting stereotyped. Known for its pluralism, Trichy has elected candidates of non-dominant castes and religions as well as non-natives in assembly and parliament elections. However, the city with 65 wards and around 20 to 122 streets per ward, has at least 30 major streets and roads bearing caste names. Some of these include Kalla streets, Kura street, Arunthathiyar nagar, Vellala street, Muslim streets, Palla street, and Saurashtra streets. While there is no major opposition from residents to street names with backward or forward class names, those from streets bearing SC/ST names are uneasy. "A century ago, streets were named based on the dominant caste of the residents, but that is a thing of the past. Caste-based streets can be renamed after deserving national and state leaders," K Suresh, councillor, ward 23 said. Maharashtra: After 'no non-Hindus' call, Shani temple fires 114 Muslim staff NASHIK: The trust managing the Shani Shingnapur shrine in Maharashtra 's Ahilyanagar has recently laid off 167 staffers on "disciplinary grounds". Of them, 114 (68%) are Muslims, a temple source said. The trust, Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan, has attributed the sackings to "non-performance and long absenteeism" but not cited any specific reasons. The staffers, working for 2-10 years, were sacked in two rounds on June 8 and June 13. An outfit named Sakal Hindu Samaj had threatened a protest on June 14 demanding removal of non-Hindus working in the shrine in Shanishingnapur. This followed a viral video in May showing a man, purportedly not a Hindu, carrying out painting work at the shrine. Devasthan CEO Gorakshanath Darandale justified the removals and denied bias. "There is no question of discrimination in the action. Those removed are from different faiths. The action was strictly disciplinary in nature. Over 2,400 employees work with Devasthan. Many do not report to work. Devasthan had held back their salaries and served show-cause notices. This is the first batch against whom action has been taken," Darandale said. Another senior Devasthan official said those sacked "were engaged in agriculture, waste management and education departments of the temple trust". "Some have been absent from work for five months."

Waqf Amendment Act was passed without political ethics or moral fear, says VCK chief
VCK founder Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday said the Waqf Amendment Act was passed in Parliament without 'political ethics or moral fear' by the BJP despite severe pushback from the Opposition ranks at every forum. Addressing a meeting organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board demanding the repeal of the amended legislation, Mr. Thirumavalavan alleged that the BJP had used the power of the government to target the Islamic community in the name of law and democracy over the last 11 years. 'Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), abrogation of Article 370, Triple Talaq, and Waqf Amendment Act targets Muslims. BJP doesn't meddle with administration of religious properties of other faiths but meddles with ones owned by the Muslim community. It uses the law to do what should be illegal. It goes against democracy by using the very democracy. On the surface of it, these actions are about targeting and harassing Muslims. But, if you look closely, it is about dismantling of the Constitution,' he said. The VCK opposed the law in Parliament and in the Joint Committee, besides organising protests. 'Now, we are organising a protest to safeguard secularism in Tiruchi. It has become necessary to sharpen our politics. There is no disagreement that all this is a result of hate politics against Muslims, but their eventual target is to dismantle the Constitution because it protects secularism,' he said. Raja said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah contended in Parliament that the Muslims were misappropriating Waqf properties and government-owned properties were being claimed as Waqf properties as reasons for passing the Act. 'All amendments brought in earlier had a basis. Whenever there was a law related to Muslims in Parliament, there would be widespread discussions and consultations and only then would the law be introduced,. I would like to ask Amit Shah and Prime Minister is the basis for the Waqf law that has been passed? Can you show that?' he said. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirullah said, 'Muslims have not understood the importance of protecting the Waqf properties. When the CAA was introduced, there were protests across India. Specifically, women began protesting in Shaheen Bhags. The Muslim community should have undertaken even more vibrant protests in the Waqf issue.'
