In Tracee Ellis Ross' new hair care ad, a 'Girlfriends' reunion

USA Today30-06-2025
Tracee Ellis Ross is getting the gang back together.
In a new commercial for the actress' hair care brand PATTERN, Ross, 52, gathers her girlfriends (literally). Joined by actresses Golden Brooks, Jill Marie Jones, and Persia White, Ross' former co-stars from the hit sitcom "Girlfriends," which aired on UPN from 2000-06 and the CW from 2006-08, the beauty mogul pulls off a reunion for the ages.
Getting all four leads in the same room (on video), Ross' ad draws on the dysfunctional hilarity that made "Girlfriends" a staple of the early aughts.
Why Tracee Ellis Ross is bringing the mixed-race experience to TV in 'Black-ish' spinoff 'Mixed-ish'
Fans of the show flooded the internet with excitement (and dreams of a larger reunion) after the ad dropped.
"First Brandy and Monica and now a Girlfriends reunion?!! Blessed are we," one user wrote in the comment section of Ross' Instagram post sharing the ad. Singers Monica and Brandy, who famously collaborated on the hit song "That Boy is Mine" in 1998, recently announced a joint tour, no doubt drawing on a similar nostalgia.
"We want a GIRLFRIENDS movie pleaseee," another commenter chimed in.
'Girlfriends' at 20: Stars including Tracee Ellis Ross remember the series
"I love this so much. HBO or MAX or whatever you call yourself now ... offer them a deal already!!!," another user chimed in, poking fun at the streamer's branding flip-flop.
The "Girlfriends" fandom is replete with big names as well, with "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes chiming in in the comments, writing "Love this!!!" and radio host Bevy Smith writing "Genius like you … and the products are amazing!!!!!!"
Ross, the daughter of music icon Diana Ross, grew her fame and acting career in the near-decade she spent playing Joan on "Girlfriends." Now a staple in the sitcom scene and a bona fide Hollywood star, she's expanded into the beauty market with PATTERN, which sells curl creams, gels and hot irons for hair of all textures.
"In this spot, we wanted to celebrate the styling rituals with our cast of various textures as well as reunite my 'Girlfriends' to show the joy that lives in our shared hair moments," the actress wrote in a release announcing the ad. "From curls, coils and tight textures to locs, fades, straight styles and more, PATTERN has got you covered."
Whether the ad will inspire a more concrete "Girlfriends" reunion remains to be seen, though Hollywood has certainly shown a penchant for revivals in recent years, bringing back everything from "Full House" to "Sex and the City."
In the meantime, Ross' ad ensured the fandom is at least well-fed.

Tracee Ellis Ross Calls Out Barack Obama for Friendship Mistake: ‘You Failed As a Friend'

Tracee Ellis Ross thinks former President Barack Obama owes her an apology. 'I broke up with someone, and I remember running into the former president and he was like, 'I could have told you that,'' Ross, 52, recalled during a Thursday, August 14, appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. 'And I was like, 'Well, you failed as a friend!' Like, it was your job to say that before, you know what I mean?' she continued. 'Like, nip it in the bud.' Ross also revealed that despite their close friendship, she's never asked Barack or his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, to set her up on a date. 'I've never asked Michelle to set me up, which I think perhaps is dumb and I need to get on that,' she joked. Travis Kelce Says He Owes Erin Andrews 'Big Time' for Telling Taylor Swift to Give Him a Chance Ross also discussed her romantic life when she appeared on Michelle Obama's 'IMO' podcast in April 2025. She admitted to Michelle and her brother Craig Robinson that she usually dates younger men for one key reason. 'A lot of men my age are steeped in a toxic masculinity and have been raised in a culture where there is a particular way that a relationship looks,' Ross explained. 'Anything that starts to smell of that for me — I did enough of it where I was controlled and felt like I was a possession or a prize — I just have no interest in it. And I will not do it again.' Ross also said that she's just no longer interested in expecting men her age to behave appropriately. 'I have long been past the age where I feel like it's my job to teach somebody or grow them up,' she concluded. Though she's been open about being interested in having a romantic partner, Ross has also made no secret of the fact that she leads a full, dynamic life all on her own. She frequently travels (and looks amazing while doing so), something that is highlighted in her 2025 series Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross. The series debuted on July 25, 2025, and is available for free on the Roku channel. In an interview with the New York Times published the same day, Ross explained that she doesn't offer travel tips. 'I don't believe in advice. I offer experience and hope. And this is my version. My transparency is about how I can give you a jumping-off point,' she said. 'I say this in the Mexico episode: There's got to be something between cat ladies and Joan of Arc. You know what I mean?' Drew Barrymore Says Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce Inspired Her to Start Dating Again — And It Worked! She added, 'Like, I really wish I had some other pictures on the wall culturally and historically that would show me what it means to push up against the cultural norm and choose yourself — of the revolutionary act of joy, particularly for a Black woman, and of having the agency and the freedom to make choices that work for you, whether you have a partner or not.' Joy Reid says ‘mediocre white men' like Trump, Elvis steal culture from other races

Advertisement Former MSNBC anchor Joy Reid condemned President Donald Trump, Elvis Presley and others on Friday as some of history's many 'mediocre White men' whose achievements are stolen or counterfeit. Reid criticized Trump's review of the Smithsonian during an interview with Wajahat Ali for his 'The Left Hook' substack, in an episode titled, 'How Mediocre White Men and Their Fragility Are Destroying America.' They argued that across America's institutions, there is a phenomenon of 'mediocre White men' with no actual culture of their own who co-opt the achievements of Black people to aggrandize themselves. Ali opened the episode by talking about Trump reforming the Kennedy Center in what his critics call a hostile takeover. The institution, which in recent years had featured drag queen performances, is now being reformed to show decidedly more conservative and pro-American content. Advertisement Trump announced this year's Kennedy Center awards last week, which he will also be hosting. 3 Reid made the comments on Wajahat Ali's 'The Left Hook' substack. 'These people cannot create culture on their own,' Ali said. 'Without Black people, Brown people, the DEIs, there's no culture in America. We make the food better. We make the economy better. We make the music better. Right? MAGA can't create culture. They got Cracker Barrel and Kid Rock.' Reid and Ali claimed that White conservatives practice their own variant of outrage culture where they complain about what they say. 'They don't have the intellectual rigor to actually argue or debate with us, right? And what they do is they tattle and tell. They run and tell teacher that 'the Black lady or the Brown man was mean to me.' And that's what they always do,' Reid said. Advertisement Reid, who initially wore a hat dedicated to the historically debatable 1619 Project, then changed to one with the letters 'FDT,' took special umbrage at Trump's efforts to review the Smithsonian's historical exhibits ahead of America's 250th anniversary. 3 United States President Donald J Trump speaks during a Multilateral Meeting with European Leaders in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC, USA, 18 August 2025. AARON SCHWARTZ/POOL/EPA/Shutterstock 'They can't fix the history they did. Their ancestors made this country into a slave — a slave hell, but they can clean it up now because they got the Smithsonian. They can get rid of all the slavery stuff,' she said. 'They got PragerU that can lie about the history to the children. They can't originally invent anything more than they ever were able to invent good music. 'We Black folk gave y'all country music, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, rock and roll. They couldn't even invent that, but they have to call a White man 'The King.' Because they couldn't make rock and roll, so they have to stamp 'The King' on a man whose main song was stolen from an overweight Black woman,' Reid continued. Advertisement Reid was referring to 'The King' Elvis Presley singing 'Hound Dog,' which was first recorded by Big Mama Thornton, a Black blues singer, and written by two Jewish-American songwriters. Elvis' version, which was more upbeat, with a faster rhythm and slightly altered lyrics, boosted his rise to fame in 1956 after his previous breakout hit, 'Heartbreak Hotel' earlier that year. 3 Rock and roll musician Elvis Presley performing on the Elvis comeback TV special on June 27, 1968. 'Joyless Reid is an ungrateful hack who fails to acknowledge her privilege. Whatever remains of her success would only be possible in the United States of America, the same country she degrades for sport. She was too unhinged for MSNBC and was fired. Instead of changing her act, she's doubled down on stupid,' he said. Fox News Digital reached out to PragerU and did not receive an immediate reply.
