KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's manufacturing sector recorded a 4.8 per cent year-on-year increase in sales value to RM160.6 billion in April 2025, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the growth was mainly driven by the food, beverages and tobacco sub-sector, which continued its double-digit expansion with an 11.1 per cent rise.
"This was accompanied by steady growth in the electrical and electronics products, and the non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products sub-sectors, which expanded by 9.8 per cent and 4.6 per cent, respectively,' he said in a statement.
However, on a monthly basis, sales value fell 2.3 per cent from RM164.3 billion in March.
Mohd Uzir said export-oriented industries, which made up 70.3 per cent of total sales, saw growth mainly from the manufacture of vegetable and animal oils and fats.
Meanwhile, the manufacture of computers, electronics and optical products rose 10.6 per cent, while machinery and equipment increased by 7.9 per cent.
Domestic-oriented industries expanded by 3.6 per cent in April, supported by a 10.0 per cent rise in food processing products, 5.9 per cent in basic metals, and 3.7 per cent in fabricated metal products (excluding machinery and equipment).
On employment, Mohd Uzir said the sector recorded 2.40 million workers in April, an increase of 1.2 per cent year-on-year.
"The growth was largely supported by food, beverages and tobacco (1.9 per cent); non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (1.9 per cent); and electrical and electronics products (1.3 per cent),' he said.
Salaries and wages paid in April totalled RM8.3 billion, up 2.4 per cent from a year earlier, though they declined 0.9 per cent from RM8.4 billion in March.
As a result, sales value per employee rose by 3.6 per cent to RM66,907. Average salaries and wages per employee climbed 1.2 per cent to RM3,460. - Bernama

Malaysia's natural rubber production tumbles 37.3 pct in April

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's natural rubber production decreased by 37.3 percent to 18,008 tons in April as compared to 28,739 tons in March, official data showed Thursday. Year-on-year comparison showed that the production of natural rubber fell by 15.6 percent from 21,325 tons a year ago, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement. Meanwhile, total stocks of natural rubber in April declined by 6.7 percent to 203,728 tons as compared to 218,253 tons in March. Exports of Malaysia's natural rubber amounted to 35,901 tons in April, decreased 31.7 percent as against 52,531 tons in March. The export performance was contributed by natural rubber-based products such as gloves, tires, tube and rubber thread. Gloves were the main exports of rubber-based products with a value of 1.1 billion ringgit (260,000 million U.S. dollars) in April, a decrease of 19.2 percent as compared to 1.3 billion ringgit in March. Cited the Malaysia Rubber Board Digest published in April, DOSM said the Kuala Lumpur Rubber Market experienced mixed trends of declines and recovery throughout April, influenced by fluctuating signals from regional rubber futures markets in response to the uncertainties of the U.S. trade policies. "Market sentiment remained subdued amid ongoing global economic uncertainties and escalating global trade tensions. Additionally, a stronger ringgit against the U.S. dollar and declining crude oil prices further weighed on sentiment," it said. (1 ringgit equals 0.24 U.S. dollar)

Malaysia's Natural Rubber Production Drops Sharply In April, Amid Weak Global Demand

Malaysia's natural rubber industry saw a significant decline in April 2025, with production plunging by 37.3% to 18,008 tonnes, compared to 28,739 tonnes in March, according to the latest data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). On a year-on-year basis, production was also down by 15.6%, with April 2024 recording 21,325 tonnes. DOSM noted that the smallholders sector remained the main contributor, accounting for 86% of national output, while estates contributed the remaining 14%. Total NR stockpiles in April also shrank, falling 6.7% to 203,728 tonnes, down from 218,253 tonnes in March. The majority of the stock was held by rubber processors (87.6%), followed by rubber consumers (12.3%) and rubber estates (0.1%). Meanwhile, exports of NR fell 31.7% to 35,901 tonnes in April, compared to 52,531 tonnes in March. Despite the decline, P.R. China remained the top export destination, accounting for 33.3% of Malaysia's rubber exports, followed by the United Arab Emirates (14.9%), Germany (14.2%), India (6.5%), and the United States (5.1%). Exports of rubber-based products, including gloves, tyres, tubes, and rubber thread, also declined. Gloves, the top contributor, generated RM1.1 billion in export value in April—down 19.2% from RM1.3 billion in March. The average price of key NR products weakened in April: Concentrated Latex fell by 7.0% to 647.20 sen/kg Scrap rubber dropped by 15.8% to 641.27 sen/kg Prices for all Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R) grades also declined between 6.9% and 13.5%, reflecting softening global demand and market uncertainties. The steep drop in production, exports, and prices signals growing pressure on Malaysia's rubber sector, which faces both seasonal challenges and weakening global demand. Market analysts suggest that demand recovery in major export markets and price stabilisation will be key factors to watch in the coming months. Related

Anwar: Govt pays RM486k for Dr M's official visit to Japan

Slug: izhalf HL: Anwar: Govt bears RM486k for Dr M's official visit to Japan Bernama MELAKA: The government bore almost half a million ringgit in costs for former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's trip to Japan to attend the annual Nikkei conference last month, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said the government had allocated approximately RM486,000 for the visit after receiving a formal application from Dr Mahathir. "There are existing provisions for former prime ministers to apply for government support for official travel, and if the sitting prime minister approves, the government will bear the cost, including for Tun Mahathir, who recently requested to attend the Nikkei conference in Japan. He applied, and I approved it. I believe the delegation comprised around seven people. "People ask me why we paid for him. He is entitled to apply, but the decision lies with the sitting prime minister. I decided to approve the RM486,000 for him to go to Japan. "I just don't want anyone to misunderstand. I don't want to take a negative attitude. Despite his daily criticisms of the government, we still approved his travel application," Anwar told reporters here today. On May 30, Dr Mahathir was reported to have attended and delivered a speech at the annual Nikkei Future of Asia conference, a platform he has attended regularly over the years. In a separate development, Anwar said he was giving time to two cabinet ministers who recently submitted resignation letters, encouraging them to reconsider their decisions. The prime minister said he had received letters from the two ministers applying for leave and resignation, but had only approved their leave for now. "Let them think about it. Personally, I would prefer that they rejoin the cabinet," he said. The ministers in question, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, reportedly submitted their resignations following defeats in recent party elections. Anwar was speaking after attending an organisational empowerment seminar and a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders here today. Also present were PKR vice-presidents Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, secretary-general Senator Fuziah Salleh, Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek, Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, and Hang Tuah Jaya division chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. During the seminar, Anwar urged PKR members to heal internal rifts and put aside dissatisfaction following the party polls last month. He also emphasised the need for unity and maturity for the party's greater mission. "Imagine this, I can work with Umno, even hugging it out. Surely, we can move past our internal disagreements too. Let's move on for the bigger agenda," he added.
