There are heavy expectations surrounding Drew Allar and the Penn State Nittany Lions heading into 2025. Not only is Allar preparing to potentially be a top-five pick in next year's NFL Draft, but Penn State should be contending for a national championship.
Still, the Nittany Lions have a whole lot of doubters. Why? Well, head coach James Franklin's career 1-18 record against top-five teams is a start, and Allar's tendency to fade against the very best teams in the country is a knock, as well.

The argument in favor of Allar is that he hasn't exactly had the best set of weapons at his disposal in Happy Valley, which is why Penn State completely retooled its receiving corps this offseason.
However, that has placed that much more pressure on the shoulders of Allar, and Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic thinks things could potentially go south for the 21-year-old signal-caller.
"What if it wasn't the receivers holding Drew Allar back but vice versa?" Russo wrote. "Allar has left a lot to be desired against the best competition. Head coach James Franklin flipped the receiver room through the transfer portal to give his quarterback more weapons, but without further improvement from Allar, it might not matter."

Photo byThe Nittany Lions bagged three receivers via the transfer portal, which should give Allar a better chance of succeeding this coming season. But if he falters, there is no doubt that his draft stock will take a hit.
Of course, it's not like Allar's numbers were poor in 2024. Far from it. He threw for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.5 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 302 yards and six scores.
Compared by many to Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen, Allar is widely viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects heading into the new season. However, just like Alabama's Jalen Milroe a year ago, that could definitely change with a disappointing 2025 campaign.
Penn State is the favorite to win the Big Ten this season, a conference that includes powerhouses like Ohio State and Oregon. Indiana, Illinois and Michigan aren't pushovers, either. It will be interesting to see how Allar handles the added pressure this fall.

The one thing we should note is that Allar can actually significantly boost his stock if he comes out and leads the Nittany Lions on a deep College Football Playoff run while also playing terrific football.
But if it's anything like last year when Allar failed to complete 60 percent of his passes in each of his last four games, the whispers will commence.

Penn State names team captains for 2025 season

Much has been made about Penn State's team leaders helping to create the winning culture of the program. As the Nittany Lions prepare for the start of a highly anticipated 2025 season, the official team leaders for this year's roster have been formally announced. Penn State announced the team captains for this year's season with five players set to lead the team this fall. Quarterback Drew Allar, defensive tackle Zane Durant, linebacker Dominic DeLuca, offensive lineman Nick Dawkins, and long snapper Tyler Duzansky were each named a team captain for the 2025 Nittany Lions. Allar, Dawkins, and DeLuca were each named captains for the 2024 season as well. This is the third straight season DeLuca will serve as a team captain. Penn State is coming off a season with an 11-1 regular season record and an appearance in the Big Ten championship game. The Nittany Lions were seeded in the College Football Playoff and won a home game against SMU in the first round and then defeated Mountain West Conference champion Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl before losing to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Orange Bowl. Penn State was ranked third in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and second in the preseason AP Top 25. Many of the early bowl projections for the upcoming season predict another deep playoff run for Penn State, with a spot in the Rose Bowl a common preseason prediction to start the playoff. Penn State's season kicks off with a home game against Nevada on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. You can see the full Penn State schedule here. Iowa Hawkeyes QB Earns Surprising Comparison to Former Ohio State Star

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Iowa Hawkeyes and head coach Kirk Ferentz are heading into the 2025 college football season with big hopes. After a disappointing 2024 season, the Hawkeyes put in a lot of work to improve during the offseason. Making a big leap at the quarterback position was an obvious need. Iowa made two moves to help make that happen. Both Mark Gronowski and Hank Brown were brought in to be the new No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks on the roster. Gronowski seems likely to start, but Brown has been showing great flashes so far early in the year. Quarterback Mark Gronowski #11 of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits throws an incomplete pass against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the fourth quarter at Boone Pickens Stadium on August 31, 2024 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Photo byMaking the move from South Dakota State, Gronowski is not a name that most national fans will recognize. However, his game should elevate the Hawkeyes' passing offense in a big way from what it was last season. Read more: Penn State QB Drew Allar Put on Notice in Concerning Outlook During the 2024 college season with the Jackrabbits, Gronowski completed 60.9 percent of his pass attempts for 2,721 yards, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also ran for 380 yards and 10 touchdowns. Back in the 2023 season, his numbers were even bigger. He threw for 3,058 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, while running for 402 yards and eight scores. With that being said, Gronowski has received an interesting comparison before his first year with Iowa. Former Michigan tight end and current Big Ten Network analyst Jake Butt spoke out with his thoughts about Gronowski. He seems a comparison between the Hawkeyes' new quarterback and former Ohio State Buckeyes star signal caller JT Barrett. "Gronowski is clearly the most talented QB they've had. He throws a nice ball as well, but feels more like a JT Barrett comp from my playing days. JT was never the most talented throwing but would get you five when you needed four. He was a playmaker and leader. That's the role I see Gronowski playing," Butt said. That is a very interesting comparison for the Iowa starting quarterback. Read more: Jim Harbaugh's Role in Michigan, Connor Stalions Scandal Revealed If Gronowski can live up to that comparison, the Hawkeyes could be in a very good position. While they aren't expected to win the Big Ten, they should take a big step in the right direction from last season. Ferentz and company will open up the 2025 season with a matchup at home against the UAlbany Great Danes on August 30. After that, they will face a big test on the road against the currently No. 22 ranked Iowa State Cyclones on September 6. For more on the Iowa Hawkeyes and college football, head to Newsweek Sports.

2025 Big Ten football favorite is not clear or unanimous

The Big Ten has in recent years been the best conference in college football. Ohio State enters this season with loads of NFL talent including safety Caleb Downs and arguably the best player in college football, receiver Jeremiah Smith. The drawback with Ohio State is the uncertainty at the quarterback position; the USC Trojans might have them beat in that category. Penn State enters this season with a fierce defense, a dominant run game, and a top quarterback in college football with Drew Allar. Penn State has the more well-rounded team, but Ohio State's talent and coach Ryan Day make the Buckeyes a tough matchup for any team they could face. With Ohio State coming off a national championship victory and Penn State being more improved, the Big Ten football season is extremely hard to predict for experts. Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports analyzes the uncertainty surrounding who will be the Big Ten champion in a recent feature. "One notable swap from the Coaches Poll finds a change atop the Big Ten. Coaches went with Ohio State, the defending national champions, at No. 2 behind the Longhorns; the media went with Penn State, believing in the Nittany Lions' clearer situation on offense and greater degree of carryover from last season. The Nittany Lions received 23 first-place votes in the AP poll - just two behind Texas. Another advantage for PSU is the addition of former OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. Clearly, coaches and the media believe both teams are good enough to win the Big Ten and deliver the league's third national championship in a row." Both teams have what it takes to win the Big Ten crown. It is easy to assume that both teams will make the College Football Playoff. With the Trojans' luck, they do not have to face either team. Uncertainty at the top of the Big Ten could bode well for the Trojans; they are coming into this season with a lot of doubts about how successful they will be. If the Trojans can take care of business in conference play and beat rival Oregon -- their toughest Big Ten matchup on the schedule -- they could earn a bid to face one of the Big Ten juggernauts in the Big Ten title game. USC could also solidify itself as a playoff team. There is no doubt the USC Trojans have a lot of talent on the roster this season, but there is just as much uncertainty regarding where they finish.
