Costa Coffee closes another store after 16 shut in just one year

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Costa Coffee on Marlborough High Street, Wiltshire, has closed after the majority of its "talented team members" were relocated to other branches. This follows a long list of Costa closures this year
Another Costa Coffee outlet has shut up shop, adding to a growing list of over a dozen branches that have closed in the past year. The local community expressed their sadness as the Costa on Marlborough High Street in Wiltshire ceased trading last month.

Local sources report that the premises have been cleared out inside and out, with all traces of Costa branding removed. No official explanation has been provided for the closure of the popular Marlborough High Street coffee shop.

A Costa spokesperson confirmed the store stopped serving customers on July 17, 2025. This comes after UK households issued warning if they have Nescafé coffee in kitchen.

The spokesperson informed the Gazette and Herald: "The majority of our talented team members have relocated to Costa Coffee stores in surrounding areas". Residents mourned the loss of their local café, with one regular branding it a "terrible loss" for Marlborough and another marking it as "such a shame", calling the shop "a great coffee spot," reports the Express.
The challenges facing Britain's high streets are well-known, with retailers grappling with competition from online shopping, steep rental prices, the rise of wage costs and subdued consumer spending.

Alarmingly, recent British Retail Consortium-Sensormatic figures indicate that one in seven UK shops is now vacant. The data also revealed that the anticipated summer retail boost has not occurred for the second year running, with overall UK footfall in July down by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year, and visits to high streets decreasing by 1.7 percent.
Costa Coffee, which is the largest coffee chain in the UK, was snapped up by Coca-Cola in a £3.9 billion deal in 2019. The brand boasts over 2,700 outlets in the UK and Ireland, along with international locations. However, recent years have seen a reported slump in sales, resulting in the closure of several branches.
This could also come down to the two-year boycott against attacks in Gaza, which saw a decrease in consumerism for brands like McDonalds, Starbucks and Zara.
The Standard has listed the following Costa Coffee shops that have closed since September 2024:

July retail sales rise yet fashion experiences bumpy ride

Total retail sales across the UK rose by 2.5 percent year-on-year in July, according to new data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC). While warm weather at the beginning of the month encouraged activity, the eventual return of rain impacted sales, particularly in fashion. 'Fashion sold well early in the month, but deteriorated as weather worsened, while homeware and indoor furniture grew steadily, recovering from the previous year's decline,' Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the BRC, said in a statement. Total sales came above the 12-month average growth of 1.9 percent, largely driven by food, for which sales rose 3.9 percent. Non-food sales saw a YoY increase of 3.9 percent, with in-store sales coming out on top, rising 1.9 percent. Online non-food sales saw a more marginal increase of 0.3 percent YoY. Despite the positive trajectory, there is still a sense of hesitancy among consumers. Linda Ellett, UK head of consumer, retail and leisure at KPMG, said that while many consumers reported feeling confident in their ability to balance monthly household budgets, 'big ticket purchases are more considered in the context of rising essential costs and ongoing caution about the economy and labour market'. Dickinson, in turn, expressed concern over the marginal growth in sales, which she said barely covered the 'seven billion pounds in new costs imposed on retailers at the last Budget'. She added: 'If the upcoming Autumn Budget sees more taxes levied on retailers' shoulders many will be forced to make difficult choices about the future of shops and jobs, and ongoing pressure would push prices higher. Ultimately, this means more families struggling, particularly those on lower incomes, reduced consumer spending and a drag on economic growth.'

Parents to spend £500 on average celebrating kids' exam results

A poll of 1,500 parents of 16-18-year-olds found a cash gift is the most popular way to mark the announcement of their children's grades. A survey of 1,500 parents with 16-18 year olds revealed that cash presents are the most favoured method of celebrating their children's exam results. ‌ Others plan to purchase clothing, mobile phones, footwear and jewellery for their youngsters. Laptops, music festival passes and even holidays also feature amongst the top 30 most popular post-results rewards. ‌ However, whilst the typical parent will fork out £467 on their child, this figure jumps to £902 in London, £783 in Northern Ireland, and £630 in the West Midlands. It comes after Brits are told to never put one banned item in garden bins as you could face punishment. ‌ UK households issued warning if they have Nescafé coffee in kitchen. 'I work at Tesco and there's one thing I hate doing for customers'. ‌ Whilst parents in Northern Ireland are most inclined to purchase a new laptop for their youngster, those in Wales are focusing on experiences, including exhibition tickets or contributions towards spa treatments. More parents in the South West are anticipated to purchase musical instruments than anywhere else across the UK, whilst those in the East Midlands are most likely to help fund a new vehicle, and in the East of England, a motorbike. The research was commissioned by Moonpig, which provides cards and an extensive selection of celebratory presents for results day. A spokesperson commented: "It's interesting to see the different trends in how parents celebrate across the country. ‌ "But no matter how much you're planning to spend or the types of gifts you choose to buy – all that matters is your kids knowing how proud you are of them. "Results day is such a huge milestone in the lives of young people, and for them to know that you appreciate all the work they've put in is the most important thing." ‌ The study revealed 68% of parents will present gifts and cards irrespective of the grades their children accomplish. Meanwhile, 74% declared all they truly value is the effort invested to reach this significant moment. However, 23% acknowledged that whilst they will certainly purchase a present either way, these will vary based on the outcomes attained. This could explain why merely 36% have already bought the gift they're intending to present in celebration of results day. With 28% expressing the same regarding a card, according to statistics. The investigation also examined the elements parents consider most inspire their youngsters to excel – with their personal sense of accomplishment and individual drive being the leading responses. ‌ Yet despite this view, half of parents confessed to, at various times, employing presents or money to encourage their children to reach particular grades. This might stem from the pressure experienced by 38% from outside influences, including fellow parents and social media, to spend money marking results day. Moonpig's spokesperson commented: "No matter the grades, it's a massive achievement and rite of passage worth celebrating. And it's nice to see that the majority of parents agree that kids should be celebrated regardless of their results. We personally can't wait to see all the things this generation will go on to do in their lives – and how this will shape the future." TOP 30 RESULTS DAY GIFTS: Cash gift. Items of clothing. Ikea to open new city centre store this week where iconic retailer used to be

The new UK branch of the Swedish giant Ikea will be its first in Sussex, set to open this Thursday, replacing a former Debenhams unit, and offering two enormous floors of retail space Ikea is set to open the doors to its new store in Brighton in a move which is bringing more than 150 jobs to the city. ‌ The new branch - its first in Sussex - opens on Thursday, replacing a former Debenhams unit, with about 6,700 sqm of retail space across two floors. ‌ Churchill Square manager Mark Buchanan-Smith said he was "super excited" and it was "brilliant" to have Ikea as its "main anchor". However, one local shopkeeper has spoken of her trepidation at the arrival of the Swedish retail giant. This comes after UK households issued warning if they have Nescafé coffee in kitchen. ‌ Martha Tiffin, who co-owns and runs the nearby independent houseware shop, Utility, said: "Obviously, we cannot compete on price - if we can survive this, we can survive anything". The comment relays shopkeeper's current struggle to remain open on the high street, competing against retail giants, "with many consumers opting for online purchasing, leaving retailers to fork out for higher rental, as well as wage and energy costs," reports the Mirror. ‌ Ikea's parent company, Ingka, bought Churchill Square shopping centre for an estimated £145m in November, 2023. The new shop is smaller than many Ikea sites so certain furniture items will be delivered or available for click and collect. This follows a previous plan for a full-size shop in Lancing, which was axed in 2021, the company blaming changing customer habits. Mr Buchanan-Smith said those wishing to go to Ikea have previously had to travel to Southampton or East Croydon. Bella Sankey, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, previously said the opening of the new shop was a "real vote of confidence" in the city, bringing new jobs and investment into the local economy. ‌ Minutes away in the North Laines, George Diplocks, who runs the consignment shop Diplock's Yard, said the new Ikea "won't make a difference" to his business. "Small businesses are going under anyway," he said, adding the proliferation of cafes and restaurants around his business meant people were not coming to the area to shop. Meanwhile, Ikea Manager Karina Gilpin, said the new store would have "everything you need for the home under one roof" as well as food to eat in or take away. "We're a Swedish company so to be able to share with Brightonians Swedish meatballs and the dime cake, it's very important for us," she added.
