The two amazing Welsh restaurants stunning TV stars and celebrity chefs

Two amazing Welsh restaurants have been making waves on primetime TV recently. Chefs from Matsudai Ramen and Asador 44, renowned eateries both based in Cardiff, have been receiving heaps of praises both on and off the screen.
Asador 44, located on Quay Street in the city centre, has been a recognised establishment in the Welsh capital for nearly a decade. While Matsudai Rame, based on Clare Road in Grangetown, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Both restaurants have built quite the reputation within those years, not only showcasing the best our Welsh chefs can offer, but the vibrancy of our culinary scene.
We have taken a look at what makes these restaurants so special, who has been raving about them, and why you should go check them out. For the latest restaurant news and reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here.

In 2001, the Morgan siblings - Tom, Owen and Natalie kicked off their hospitality journey in south Wales when they opened Bar 44. Since then, their business has grown with Bar 44 restaurants in Cardiff, Penarth and Clifton Village in Bristol, a cookbook as well as a handful of other products, and another restaurant called Asador 44, which was opened on Quay Street in Cardiff in 2017.
The Spanish grill and wine house has its custom-built wood-fired grill, which creates all kinds of delicious dishes that can consist of the freshest fish and seafood, dry aged steaks, sucking pigs, whole legs of lamb and vegetables, which are all cooked over charcoal in an open kitchen. Situated only a stone throw away from the mighty Principality Stadium, and only a few yards away from its sister restaurant - Bar 44, it's hard to believe you are in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city centre once you're inside Asador 44.
You can sit back, relax and enjoy in this cosy yet classy and intimate restaurant. Housed in a historic, warm, red bricked building, you can see meat hanging in cool fridges, a partially open kitchen and the daily changing specials written on a chalkboard. Over recent years, Asador 44 has been highly praised by experts.
In August 2024, renowned food critic Giles Coren sung the praises of the Cardiff restaurant, but one thing stood out for him. "There are all sorts of good signs when you walk into Asador 44 in central Cardiff, just across from the Arms Park', he wrote in his review for the Times. "And I don't just mean metaphorical ones, like the friendly welcome, confident design and shelves of battered cookbooks. I mean actual signs.
"Really good signs. Like, for example, the one that says, 'Suckling Pig Shoulder w/ cider sauce — £90'. Excellent sign, that. An even better sign says, '1 KG Welsh Ex-Dairy Rib — £110'. You ask me what is the sign of a great restaurant? I say a sign like that."
A year prior, in 2023, First Dates star Fred Sirieix and chef and Wahaca co-founder, Thomasina Miers, paid the restaurant a visit during their tour of south Wales in their More4 series - Remarkable Places to Eat. The duo were served with Asador's prawn croquetas, which Fred marveled: "Oh my God, the flavour, it's beautiful! As far as croquetas are concerned, these are amongst the best I've had, maybe the best. These guys are not even Spanish!"
He added his disbelief at the high quality of Spanish cooking in the middle of the Welsh capital after their mains of Spanish rice with clams and pork belly. And it wasn't just Giles, Fred and Thomasina who loved Asador 44, in April 2023, The Telegraph's top restaurant reviewer William Sitwell called the place "magnificent" and "tremendous".
The siblings have made quite the name for themselves on TV as well, with Owen Morgan often appearing on Saturday Morning Kitchen alongside friend and fellow chef Matt Tebbutt. Owen appeared on the BBC cooking show in December of last year. If you want to try out this restaurant yourself, you can find out more about booking here.
This restaurant has a big following. In 2019, James Chant began the business as a pop-up, dishing out tasty ramen kits during the coronavirus pandemic before opening the restaurant on Clare Road in Grangetown in August 2022. Matsudai, which means "all generations" in Japanese, has drawn praise from the likes of Tom Parker-Bowles and Jay Rayner.
The latter critic gave the restaurant a glowing review, not long after the restaurant opened in Cardiff in 2022, and described it as "inventive, geeky, and superb". Having tried the ramen through a kit during lockdown, trying the noodle dish at the restaurant was "so much more beautiful, so much more organised, having been plated by the man who knows what he is doing", according to the critic.
Rayner went on to heap praise on the signature tonkotsu, saying it had an "almost Dulux gloss to it, speckled with jewels of molten fat" with "generous slices of pork belly". Following this stellar review, the restaurant enjoyed a surge in its popularity, with photos showing people queuing outside the Grangetown eatery to get a table.
Matsudai Ramen is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Recently, the founder amazed guests with his flavours when he appeared on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch. While on the show, he brought three dishes along for hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer to try, who then shared the dishes with guests including Strictly professional dancers Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez, and comedian Dave Gorman.
One of the noodle dishes he brought along was Chippy Lane Mazesoba, which he based on Cardiff's infamous Caroline Street with its flavours of chicken, ginger and curry. Chant also brought lamb and leek wontons, a Welshified take on an oriental dumpling which are on the menu in the restaurant, and he also brought the classic ramen dish pork tonkotsu, which he said was one of their most popular home kits. Dancers Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez were taken aback by how nice the dishes were.
If you ever find yourself visiting this corner of Cardiff, Matusdai Ramen has got to be on your list. Try out their amazing karaage chicken, or alternatively their karaage mushroom, which is just as tender and delicious as their meaty counterpart. Take a sip out of their vibrant selection of sake and shochu drinks, before delving into their carefully curated ramens. To find out more about their bookings, head over to their website here.

Tom Felton Addresses J.K. Rowling Controversy Amid Harry Potter Return

Originally appeared on E! Online Tom Felton isn't tuned into the noise. Just days after the Harry Potter alum announced he'll be returning to the franchise as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child on Broadway, Tom was asked whether some of the controversy around author J.K. Rowling's anti-trans statements affected his decision to return. "No, I can't say it does," Tom told Variety on the red carpet of the Tony Awards June 8. "I'm not really that attuned to it." The 37-year-old—who starred alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the films— continued, "The only thing I always remind myself is that I've been lucky enough to travel the world. Here I am in New York. And I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter, and she's responsible for that. So, I'm incredibly grateful." In fact, Tom spoke to how the existence of the Broadway production—which follows the unlikely friendship between the sons of Harry and Draco after they both get sorted into Slytherin house—speaks to the longevity of Harry Potter. Is High-Speed Sailing the New Formula 1?

Nearly 10,000 fans gathered this past weekend to watch some of the world's top sailors race past the Statue of Liberty, with the iconic New York City skyline as their backdrop. SailGP, a fast-growing sailing league in its fifth season, held the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix in New York Harbor for crowds seated in stands along the water's edge. The investors and organizers behind SailGP believe that high-speed boats and exciting athletes can bring young fans to a sport that many consider stuffy and inaccessible. The race was the third in the US Rolex SailGP Championship, following events in Los Angeles and San Francisco; in total, the season will include 14 events on five continents, with hopes to expand in coming years. Attendees saw a brutal race through the rain on Saturday, followed by a final round on Sunday. The Spanish team took the top prize, with New Zealand and France ranking in second and third, respectively. Saturday's weather made it 'a super, super tricky day,' said Anna Weis, an American sailor. 'These are the kind of days [where] as sailors you're coming back and just scratching your head and thinking, Wow, this is really hard.' The league hopes that the international audience that has fueled the explosive growth of Formula 1 will find similar thrills on the water, according to Leah Davis, SailGP's chief marketing officer. According to SailGP's chief marketing officer Leah Davis, the league hopes to capture the excitement of the international audience that has driven Formula 1's explosive growth—and deliver that same level of thrill on the water. 'How do we take sailing to a modern, younger, global audience in a format that makes sense to today's sporting landscape?' she asks. 'We've spent so many years really perfecting the product on the water, but now it's all about how do we scale the experience and the fun? We call it après-sail, which is our take on that guest experience.' Last week, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds became co-owners of the Australian team, while other investors include Anne Hathaway and Issa Rae. DJ Khaled holds a unique role with SailGP as its official Chief Hype Officer. 'Sailing as a sport has always been quite hard to bring to people visibly, to bring close to the spectators,' says Nicole van der Velden, a member of the victorious Spanish team. 'The platform that SailGP has made makes it really attractive for people to watch, [including] people that have never been into sailing. It's really cool to see that it's reaching a bigger public.' Adds Davis: 'Once people see it, it's pretty easy to fall in love within the first few minutes. You can see it's short, sharp flying boats. That's definitely new. We want to be a bit fun…our brand is [about] getting people engaged with a bit of a twinkle in our eye.'

Walmart challenges consumer perceptions with ‘Who Knew?' campaign

This story was originally published on Marketing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Marketing Dive newsletter. Walmart has teamed with actors Walton Goggins and Stephanie Beatriz for a new campaign, 'Walmart. Who Knew?,' designed to challenge consumer perceptions about the big-box store, according to details shared with Marketing Dive. Goggins serves as a knowledgeable guide in a 60-second spot set to The Who's 'Who Are You' where he dishes on the various perks of shopping with Walmart. Beatriz plays a similar role in a Spanish-language ad set to Ricardo Arjona's "Quien Diría.' The effort, which is live and spans TV, online video, paid social and out-of-home ads, follows the retailer's brand refresh in January. The campaign was inspired by research indicating that while 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart, most aren't aware of the retailer's brand evolution. Walmart is reintroducing itself to consumers who may not be aware of its full range of capabilities with its latest campaign. The effort follows the big-box store's recent brand refresh, which included a new typeface, more vibrant colors and a larger emphasis on its spark logo. The refresh also included a focus on delivering greater consistency across channels like its app and website, moves meant to support its goal of becoming a true omnichannel retailer. With its latest campaign, Walmart is highlighting features like Express Delivery and its enhanced Walmart+ membership benefits, including free delivery on a variety of items. A 60-second spot starring Goggins ('The White Lotus') begins with the star asking 'You wanna hear a secret?,' before revealing that the sauna he is sitting in is from Walmart. He goes on to appear in a variety of other scenarios, showcasing how the retailer can provide an assist. The spot ends with a voiceover that states, 'The Walmart you thought you knew is now new.' Actress Beatriz ('Brooklyn Nine-Nine') appears in a Spanish-language spot set at a gender reveal party. The star is seen explaining that, because of Walmart's speedy delivery, she is able to wait to learn what gender the baby is before purchasing a gift, which she proceeds to do after a chaotic reveal. Ahead of the campaign's launch, celebrity Paris Hilton and NBA player Russell Westbrook appeared to tease the effort with social media posts that featured blue and yellow shopping bags marked with the words 'I knew.' Walmart's effort takes a similar approach as JCPenney's 'Yes, JCPenney' campaign that launched in April. That effort, which pushes consumers to reconsider what they think they know about the 123-year-old brand, kicked off with out-of-home ads that depict stylish looks but without overt labels. Instead, they feature copy reading, 'It's from where?' and QR codes that reveal the clothing is from JCPenney. The similarities between Walmart and JCPenney's campaigns are a signal of how legacy retailers — Walmart was founded in 1962 — are attempting to stay relevant and build loyalty as shopping habits change. Walmart reported revenue of $165.6 billion during Q1 of its fiscal year 2026 ended April 30, an increase of 2.5% year over year, per an earnings statement. Its global ads business grew 50% YoY and Walmart Connect in the U.S. was up 31%. Beyond its campaign, the brand has sought to connect with consumers in other ways recently, including through the launch of its own Minecraft Java server in March as a way to link itself to the movie based on the video game property.
