The two amazing Welsh restaurants stunning TV stars and celebrity chefs
Two amazing Welsh restaurants have been making waves on primetime TV recently. Chefs from Matsudai Ramen and Asador 44, renowned eateries both based in Cardiff, have been receiving heaps of praises both on and off the screen.
Asador 44, located on Quay Street in the city centre, has been a recognised establishment in the Welsh capital for nearly a decade. While Matsudai Rame, based on Clare Road in Grangetown, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Both restaurants have built quite the reputation within those years, not only showcasing the best our Welsh chefs can offer, but the vibrancy of our culinary scene.

In 2001, the Morgan siblings - Tom, Owen and Natalie kicked off their hospitality journey in south Wales when they opened Bar 44. Since then, their business has grown with Bar 44 restaurants in Cardiff, Penarth and Clifton Village in Bristol, a cookbook as well as a handful of other products, and another restaurant called Asador 44, which was opened on Quay Street in Cardiff in 2017.
The Spanish grill and wine house has its custom-built wood-fired grill, which creates all kinds of delicious dishes that can consist of the freshest fish and seafood, dry aged steaks, sucking pigs, whole legs of lamb and vegetables, which are all cooked over charcoal in an open kitchen. Situated only a stone throw away from the mighty Principality Stadium, and only a few yards away from its sister restaurant - Bar 44, it's hard to believe you are in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city centre once you're inside Asador 44.
You can sit back, relax and enjoy in this cosy yet classy and intimate restaurant. Housed in a historic, warm, red bricked building, you can see meat hanging in cool fridges, a partially open kitchen and the daily changing specials written on a chalkboard. Over recent years, Asador 44 has been highly praised by experts.
In August 2024, renowned food critic Giles Coren sung the praises of the Cardiff restaurant, but one thing stood out for him. "There are all sorts of good signs when you walk into Asador 44 in central Cardiff, just across from the Arms Park', he wrote in his review for the Times. "And I don't just mean metaphorical ones, like the friendly welcome, confident design and shelves of battered cookbooks. I mean actual signs.
"Really good signs. Like, for example, the one that says, 'Suckling Pig Shoulder w/ cider sauce — £90'. Excellent sign, that. An even better sign says, '1 KG Welsh Ex-Dairy Rib — £110'. You ask me what is the sign of a great restaurant? I say a sign like that."
A year prior, in 2023, First Dates star Fred Sirieix and chef and Wahaca co-founder, Thomasina Miers, paid the restaurant a visit during their tour of south Wales in their More4 series - Remarkable Places to Eat. The duo were served with Asador's prawn croquetas, which Fred marveled: "Oh my God, the flavour, it's beautiful! As far as croquetas are concerned, these are amongst the best I've had, maybe the best. These guys are not even Spanish!"
He added his disbelief at the high quality of Spanish cooking in the middle of the Welsh capital after their mains of Spanish rice with clams and pork belly. And it wasn't just Giles, Fred and Thomasina who loved Asador 44, in April 2023, The Telegraph's top restaurant reviewer William Sitwell called the place "magnificent" and "tremendous".
The siblings have made quite the name for themselves on TV as well, with Owen Morgan often appearing on Saturday Morning Kitchen alongside friend and fellow chef Matt Tebbutt. This restaurant has a big following. In 2019, James Chant began the business as a pop-up, dishing out tasty ramen kits during the coronavirus pandemic before opening the restaurant on Clare Road in Grangetown in August 2022. Matsudai, which means "all generations" in Japanese, has drawn praise from the likes of Tom Parker-Bowles and Jay Rayner.
The latter critic gave the restaurant a glowing review, not long after the restaurant opened in Cardiff in 2022, and described it as "inventive, geeky, and superb". Having tried the ramen through a kit during lockdown, trying the noodle dish at the restaurant was "so much more beautiful, so much more organised, having been plated by the man who knows what he is doing", according to the critic.
Rayner went on to heap praise on the signature tonkotsu, saying it had an "almost Dulux gloss to it, speckled with jewels of molten fat" with "generous slices of pork belly". Following this stellar review, the restaurant enjoyed a surge in its popularity, with photos showing people queuing outside the Grangetown eatery to get a table.
Matsudai Ramen is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Recently, the founder amazed guests with his flavours when he appeared on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch. While on the show, he brought three dishes along for hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer to try, who then shared the dishes with guests including Strictly professional dancers Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez, and comedian Dave Gorman.
One of the noodle dishes he brought along was Chippy Lane Mazesoba, which he based on Cardiff's infamous Caroline Street with its flavours of chicken, ginger and curry. Chant also brought lamb and leek wontons, a Welshified take on an oriental dumpling which are on the menu in the restaurant, and he also brought the classic ramen dish pork tonkotsu, which he said was one of their most popular home kits. Dancers Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez were taken aback by how nice the dishes were.

For Father's Day weekend: David McGrath: My father left me a road map for life's journey
I didn't quite get what the fathers were up to. Dad kept us in the dark, calling it a midnight swim. It was the summer of 1960, and Charlie McGrath Sr. had rented a resort cabin on Lake Morrison in Michigan for our family of 10. Staying in the other rentals were five other families from the same neighborhood in Evergreen Park. Between the McGraths, DiBennardis, and Grandes who lived on 96th Place, and the Booths, Burges, and Dugals on the adjacent block of 97th Street, it felt like a traveling circus with a dozen adults and twice as many children. And every evening when it grew dark, all the fathers and mothers took their towels and robes down to the beach. It was actually closer to 9pm, not midnight. Eleven years old, I wondered why they'd want to swim at night when it was chilly, and the mosquitoes were out, and you couldn't play dive-and-catch since how could you see the ball? And it would take forever to get used to the water. Years earlier when we first moved to EP, and the families on our block had begun picnicking and partying together, the fathers smoking and drinking beer on each other's porches in the evening, I'd fall asleep to the steady thrum of men's voices through my bedroom screen. On Sundays, the fathers drove everyone to Mass at St. Bernadette's, where we also attended school, and I thought this was how the world worked, with a rule that your playmates' parents must be friends of your own parents. Later I learned that the fathers had served during WWII, which somehow meant that although three were tall, and one was almost bald, and two had trades, and four wore suits and ties to work, all were brothers. I didn't fully understand why, knowing only that the fathers contended with the world's mysteries and machinations, so that we did not have to, blissful about our futures stretching to infinity with limitless opportunities for fun, especially when the dads started vacationing together. Which meant that Tom and John Booth, the boys with whom my brother Kenneth and I walked home from school each day, rode bikes together to buy comic books at Baker's grocery, played baseball on Saturdays, and went trick or treating on Halloween, would be at the same resort for a whole week of what amounted to summer camp without the homesickness, when every dinner was a cookout with hot dogs and shoestring potato chips, and hours of swimming, chicken fights, sunburn, trolling for bass with a popping bug behind the rowboat, and exploring the surrounding woods. August's daylight lingered past supper, when everybody would meet up at our cottage with its extra large family room with two picnic tables pushed together under a high timber ceiling. When the grownups gathered at the door to leave, my father turned to remind us to stay inside and behave. The other fathers nodded solemnly, as Tom and I choked back laughs since Dad was wearing olive green rubber goggles and holding a cold can of beer against his bare chest. We waited till the grownups cleared out before commencing an indoor 'carnival' where everyone could choose which group to join for Monopoly or Clue or Sorry or charades, before raiding the pantry and fridge for Jays Potato Chips and Pepsi and Salerno Butter Cookies. My older brother, no surprise, chose Monopoly when he saw that pretty Phyllis Grande was part of the group. And Tom was razzing and poking me toward the corner where Lynn DiBennardi, in the same grade, was dealing cards for Clue—her dazzling smile that made it hard for me to breathe. And there's a bright clarity with which I remember the wide eyes of others around the table, since, unsupervised, we were oddly cautious and extra kind and also eager to follow the fathers' orders to behave, so as not to break the delicious tension simmering in that room. When my sister Rosie held up her hand for everyone to hush, we could hear a man's voice outside sing the words, 'Michael rowed the boat ashore,' followed by a crescendo of laughter and a single, un-adult-like squeal. And when one of the boys who had been playing charades suggested that must be the only verse the aging father could remember, we laughed and went back to our games and covert passions, so that another squeal from outside of, 'Wheeee, Michael!' and the muffled roar that followed, elicited no more of our attention. I don't know what time they came back, just that all the grownups had wet and stringy hair, and I was tired and glad for bed, though I didn't fall fast asleep. The window was open, the breeze pushing the scent of water and sand and seaweed. And I was impatient for tomorrow, so I shut my eyes tight, though unable to shake some tell-tale sadness for life having passed our elders by, despite that for the rest of the week and sometimes right in the middle of the day, Mr. Booth would stand on his cabin's porch and call out across the volleyball court and horseshoe pits, 'Whee…Michael!' and my father would smile and wave. When the secret revealed itself as we'd gotten older, I looked back with admiration and amusement at their daring. I was also grateful because the fathers had equipped us with a road map for life's journey with structure and boundaries, but also escape routes and freedom to find our own way. While others not as fortunate have searched in anguish all their lives, I became a whole person with direction, as a part of the community, a part of humanity. Thanks to the fathers. Will mother and son from Suffolk win hit BBC One Show?
The final episode of a BBC One competition is set to hit our TV screens tonight and we have one question - could it be won by a duo from Suffolk? Mother and son Caroline and Tom, from Bury St Edmunds, have been traversing through Asia in the latest series of Race Across the World. The pair, who described themselves as "unlikely travel companions", started on the Great Wall of China and had to compete against other duos to get to Kanyakumari on the southern tip of India. At the end of the last episode, Caroline and Tom were the first pair to sign the check-in book, earning them the chance to win £20,000. In the penultimate episode, Caroline said: "I can't believe we are first, it's the most incredible feeling." There are six hours ahead of Elizabeth and Letitia, who are in second place, and 17 hours ahead of Brian and Melvyn in fourth place. However, working for budget and sightseeing along the way could mean other pairs could make up time along the final stretch. Speaking about who they think the biggest competition is, Tom said: "I think Fin and Sioned are the people to look out for as they managed to make a massive comeback and when it comes to the run route, they can run quicker and faster than we can, so that's a worry." How much budget do Caroline and Tom have? Each pair started the race with a budget of £2,280 which worked at to around £22 per day. The initial budget is based on the cost of the ticket to fly from the start point to the end point. Pairs can earn more money to spend throughout the competition by working in the places and countries they visit. After spending around £30 on train tickets to the final checkpoint, Caroline and Tom were left with a budget of 29%.
