Panthers GM Dan Morgan talks about the team's biggest training camp battles

Let the battles begin! Carolina Panthers president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan spoke to reporters this afternoon, a day before the start of his team's first training camp session. He was asked about some of the roster's biggest position battles, including the one at wide receiver. "I'm excited about it," Morgan replied. "I'm excited not just about the receiving corp, but in other areas as well. It's gonna be a really good competition, and that's what we want on this roster. We wanna create competition. I think that just brings out the best in everybody. So yeah, I'm just excited to watch it and see how it unfolds." The room—which may feature the most depth Carolina has seen in quite some time—is headed by 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan, 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette and two-time Pro Bowler Adam Thielen. Below them sit an intriguing collection of both promising youngsters and reliable veterans—including Jalen Coker, Jimmy Horn Jr., David Moore and Hunter Renfrow. Morgan was later asked about the secondary, another hotbed of competition on the depth chart. "We have a lot of young, talented guys that we're excited about on the roster," he said. "I'm just lookin' for continuous growth on a daily basis. Just see them go out there, see them get better every single day. We're excited about 'em, but again, they gotta put the work in and I know they're up for that challenge." Unlike at wideout, Carolina's cornerback position doesn't carry a ton of depth. Outside of projected starters Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, the Panthers currently have a combined five seasons of NFL experience between seven other corners. The same could be said at safety, where free-agent signee Tre'von Moehrig is the only sure thing. He's backed by 2025 fourth-rounder Lathan Ransom, Demani Richardson, Nick Scott and three undrafted free agents. Nevertheless, the challenge kicks off on Wednesday. Panthers DL Derrick Brown cleared for 'all activities' ahead of training camp

The Carolina Panthers are getting back the wrecking ball of their defense. President of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan hit the lectern on Tuesday for his pre-training camp press conference. He was asked about the outlook on defensive lineman Derrick Brown, who missed 16 of the team's 17 games this past season due to a knee injury. "He's doing good. He was cleared for all activities," Morgan stated. "He's looking great, he's feeling great. We're excited to have him back, and he's a huge piece of our defense." Brown sustained the setback during Carolina's Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The campaign prior saw the former seventh overall pick notch 103 tackles, a single-season record for a defensive lineman, as well as his first career Pro Bowl selection. Carolina's defense, without Brown for about 95 percent of their games, went on to make some history of their own. The Panthers allowed 534 points, the most in NFL history, and a league-high 179.8 rushing yards per game. Morgan was then asked if the coaching staff will apply some load management for the returning Brown. "We're gonna be smart with guys," Morgan replied. "We're not just gonna throw them out there and say, 'Go ahead.' We wanna be smart, we wanna do it the right way and bring him along slowly. But I know him—he's champing at the bit to get out there and be full-speed and be in there every play with his teammates. But we have to be smart." The Panthers will hit the field for their first practice of training camp on Wednesday. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Panthers GM Dan Morgan provides injury updates before start of training camp

The Carolina Panthers seem to be encouraged by the statuses of tight end Tommy Tremble and punter Sam Martin. On Monday, the Panthers made a few roster moves—two of which saw the team place Tremble on the active/physically unable to perform list and Martin on the active/non-football injury list. President of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan, during his first press conference of the summer on Tuesday, was asked about the outlook for both players "Yeah, Sam had a minor hamstring. He's trending in a really good direction," Morgan told reporters. "I don't wanna put a timeline on it, but he's looking in good shape." After moving on from Johnny Hekker this offseason, Carolina signed Martin to a one-year, $3 million deal out of free agency. The 35-year-old will be entering his 13th NFL campaign in 2025, with his previous three coming as a member of the Buffalo Bills. Morgan added that the team will not look to sign a replacement in Martin's absence. Instead, they'll use a JUGS machine to simulate punts in the early goings of training camp. He then addressed their position on Tremble, who underwent back surgery in May. "In terms of Tommy, he's making really good progress," Morgan stated. "He's actually ahead of schedule. We feel really good with where he's at and we're excited about his progression." The Panthers, per Morgan, still remain unsure about Tremble's availability for Week 1 of the regular season. Outside of Tremble, the roster features five tight ends—including 2024 fourth-round pick Ja'Tavion Sanders and 2025 fifth-round pick Mitchell Evans. Joe Morgan's acrobatic 48-yard touchdown catch is the Saints Play of the Day

Look up -- we're on Day 48 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' 20205 regular season opener, and today's pick for the Saints Play of the Day is easy. Joe Morgan shocked the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with this leaping 48-yard touchdown catch back in 2014. You can see it for yourself right here. It had been a rough year for New Orleans. The Saints went into this game with a 1-4 record and were trailing by seven points going into halftime. So they took a bold shot; Drew Brees faked a handoff on a play-action pass, and Marques Colston and Lance Moore drew the coverage there way, freeing up Morgan. He had to adjust to an underthrown ball from Brees but that allowed him to duck under a defender's tackle. Then he flipped another Buccaneer off their feet and took a hit from a third Bucs defender while diving into the end zone. This is the kind of acrobatics you normally just see at the circus, but Morgan pulled it off on the football field. He only caught 10 passes in that 2012 season but he made the most of them. Morgan averaged 37.9 yards per reception that year, scoring three times. That turned out to be unsustainable in the long run, but it made for a great highlight reel. And it earned him a place in Saints history.
