Aitana Bonmatí leaves hospital and is expected to rejoin Spain squad for Euro 2025
MADRID (AP) — Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí left hospital on Sunday and is expected to rejoin the squad in the next few days to try to play in the Women's European Championship, the Spanish soccer federation said.
The two-time Ballon d'Or winner was hospitalized after falling ill with a fever late Friday. She tested positive for meningitis.
'After several days hospitalized with viral meningitis, Aitana Bonmatí has been discharged from the hospital and will join the Spanish national team in the coming days,' the federation said in its brief statement, without giving more detail about her condition.
Bonmatí missed Friday's friendly win against Japan in Madrid and was not expected to travel with the rest squad to Switzerland on Sunday. It wasn't clear when she would travel.
Spain's first game is against Portugal on Thursday in Bern. It will also face Belgium and Italy in Group B at Euro 2025.
If Bonmatí's condition doesn't improve, coach Montse Tomé still has some time to replace her with another player ahead of the tournament.
Spain won the World Cup in 2023 for its first major women's trophy. It also won the inaugural edition of the Women's Nations League in 2024. It has never won the European Championship.
The 27-year-old Bonmatí has won the top individual award for women's soccer for the past two years. The Barcelona player was key to Spain winning the 2023 Women's World Cup.
Bonmatí's vision, dribbling skills, passing and goals have also been vital to Barcelona reaching five consecutive Champions League finals, with the Catalan club winning three titles.

Her absence would put more pressure on Alexia Putellas, herself a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, and fellow Barcelona midfielder Patricia Guijarro to lead Spain in Switzerland.
Three years ago, Putellas tore her ACL three days before starting the 2022 European Championship. Spain was eliminated in the quarterfinals without its then-top player.
Spain should still be favored in its opener against Portugal, a team it beat twice in April — including a 7-1 home victory — in the Nations League.

James, who recently returned to on-court workouts after taking several weeks to recover after spraining a knee ligament in the Lakers' final game of this past season's playoffs, told the AP earlier this month that he expected to be ready for training camp. 'I have a lot of time to take care of my injury, my knee, the rest of my body and make sure I'm as close to 100% as possible when training camp begins in late September,' James said in that interview. If any doubt existed even after that about James, the NBA's oldest current player, coming back for at least one more season, it's gone now. He had until Sunday afternoon to make his decision on the option, one that pushes his career on-court earnings to about $580 million. This coming season will be his first full year with Luka Doncic as a teammate. Doncic was traded to the Lakers from Dallas in February, but the team — which entered the postseason as the No. 3 seed in a loaded Western Conference — still fell in Round 1 to Minnesota. Recommended video James turns 41 in December. He's been an All-NBA pick in 21 of his 22 seasons in the league, including a second-round nod this past season. No other player has more than 15 All-NBA selections. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists this past season. A's catcher Shea Langeliers could be activated Monday
NEW YORK (AP) — Catcher Shea Langeliers could be activated by the Athletics on Monday after missing 3 1/2 weeks with a strained left oblique. 'I think we're going to get a bat back tomorrow,' manager Mark Kotsay said Sunday. 'Shea Langeliers will rejoin us in Tampa.' Langeliers was hurt while fouling off a pitch against Minnesota's Kody Funderburk during a June 5 game. Langeliers started a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday and was 8 for 13 with one homer and four RBIs in three games entering Sunday. He is batting .237 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs for the A's, but hit .172 over his 18 previous games before getting hurt. Langeliers batted .241 after the All-Star break last year. Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias taken off the field on cart with left leg injury
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias was taken off the field on a cart after sustaining a left lower leg injury in the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Arias went deep into the hole to field a grounder hit by Masyn Winn with one out, but caught his left spike on the grass and awkwardly rolled his ankle. The ball wound up in left field for a single. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder immediately grabbed his lower leg and remained prone on the field for several minutes. He was fitted with an immobilizer before being lifted onto the medical cart that drove him off the field. The Guardians will provide details about his injury once Arias undergoes an examination. Arias is batting .231 with six homers and 31 RBIs in 77 games. This is the 25-year-old Venezuelan's first full season as a starter.
