Illegal pharma opioid network unearthed, 6 arrested: Punjab Police
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that Amritsar Police unearthed the Tramadol supply chain, which originated from a small recovery of 35 tablets in Amritsar and led to a manufacturing unit in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
'Six arrests were made based on sequential disclosures and raids, including chemists, distributors and the plant head of Lucent Biotech Ltd. Further investigation is underway," the DGP said in a post on X.
Police seized over 70,000 Tramadol tablets, Rs 7.65 lakh in cash and 325 kg of raw material used for manufacturing the drug.

ED raids ex-IAS officer, others in ₹105 crore SCERT 'fraud' case in Assam
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) carried out searches against retired IAS officer Sewali Devi Sharma and others in an alleged ₹105 crore scam in the Assam State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), official sources said. At least eight premises connected with Sharma, a former executive chairman-cum-director of the SCERT, and some of her alleged associates were raided under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. She was arrested by the State police from Rajasthan a few days after filing of the complaint. Sharma was subsequently chargesheeted by police for alleged possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 5.7 crore, according to the sources. The 1992-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer hailed from the Rajasthan cadre and was on deputation to Assam when alleged irregularities worth Rs 105 crore took place during her tenure in the SCERT between 2017 and 2020. Reports said she obtained bail in this case from the Supreme Court in March. The former bureaucrat could not be contacted immediately for a comment on the ED action. Sharma, according to sources, served as the Executive Chairman-cum-Director of Open and Distance Learning Cell (ODL) of the SCERT and was responsible for the implementation of the National Council for Teacher Education's (NCTE) two-year Diploma in Elementary Education programme. The state government had approved the creation of 59 institutions and the training of 27,897 teachers. However, in comparison, the ex-IAS officer is alleged to have opened 347 study centres and enrolled 1,06,828 trainees to "collect more funds." Sharma, the sources claimed, opened five bank accounts for the ODL Cell, where she was the "sole signatory" and this was in "violation" of government rules. Of the ₹115 crore she received in fees from individuals, she allegedly spent more than Rs 105 crore without obtaining financial sanction from the state government, the sources alleged. The expenditure was incurred for supplies and execution of works without following the rules and procedures and payments were released without complete supply of materials, and no work was done, they claimed. These contracts, as per ED's probe, were given to entities "owned or controlled" by associates or family members (son-in-law, daughter) of Sharma as well as to a chartered accountant named Sarang More, who was the auditor of the ODL Cell. The contracts were awarded "without" advertisements or invitations for tenders, as stipulated by the government for each procurement of above ₹5 lakh, sources alleged. Except for two parties, none had any experience in executing work orders awarded to them and payments were made "without" the required receipts or verification of actual supply, the ED claimed.

Imran Khan's party says over 500 supporters arrested in Pakistans Punjab
Last Updated: Lahore, Aug 5 (PTI) Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's party on Tuesday claimed that hundreds of its workers and supporters who took to the streets, demanding the release of the party founder, were arrested by police in Pakistan's Punjab province. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters began their nationwide campaign demanding the release of Khan, who completed two years in jail on August 5. Khan, 72, was arrested on August 5, 2023, from his residence in Lahore after being convicted by a court in a corruption case. He has been incarcerated since his arrest due to conviction in other cases, and is currently being held at the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. According to Khan's party, most arrests were made in Lahore as Khan's supporters came out on the roads in large numbers to protest against the 'fascist regime". Police in Punjab province, which is ruled by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, arrested PTI supporters for allegedly violating Section 144, which bans the assembly of four or more people. A Punjab Police spokesperson said that no one is allowed to violate Section 144, as arrests have been made in this regard in the province. Since there has been an apparent ban on the broadcast media coverage of PTI rallies, a number of videos from the rallies showing police cracking down on the party workers have gone viral on social media. The police action was condemned on social media for dragging even elderly supporters of the PTI during the protest rallies. However, a PTI lawyers' rally put up a good show on Lahore's Mall Road as police personnel appeared cautious in taking action against the participants. 'Today, August 5, marks the second anniversary of the incarceration of former prime minister Imran Khan with all basic human rights revoked, no or very limited access to his legal team or family, no access to his political leadership other than a couple of people now and then," senior party leader Zulfi Bokhari said. He said the government imposed a ban on gatherings, blocking main highways, wrecking cars with party flags and raiding the residences of active party leaders and workers. 'Over 500 PTI leaders and workers have been arrested so far in Punjab alone, mostly from Lahore, including several lawmakers," he said. 'Democracy is non-existent, nor is there the rule of law and human rights. However, this kind of tyrannical treatment of our very own Pakistanis is shameful, even for this hybrid regime," Bokhari said. Another PTI leader, Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, said that 'breathing has been made a crime as the 'fake' Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, now considers herself a dictator". Sharing a video of a police raid on her residence on social media, she said that the Punjab Police once again raided her home. 'In a democracy, it is usually the case that if any group protests and damages government property, then institutions spring into action. But here the situation is reversed – the protest has not even begun, yet the state commits a far greater crime by trampling the sanctity of our homes," she said. 'As a state, we need to wake up. Such fascist actions are eroding human rights, democracy, and civil liberties," she said. Former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser said party supporters will also reach outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to protest against Khan's illegal confinement. 'Imran Khan has given a message that he is ready to stay in jail for 10 years for the people of Pakistan and the rule of law, but not succumb to any kind of pressure from the regime," said Qaiser, who is also the Secretary General of Tehreek Tahaffuz Ain-e-Pakistan (TTAP), an alliance of six opposition parties. 847 kg of ganja worth Rs 4.2 crore seized in Telangana; 2 held
Last Updated: Hyderabad, Aug 5 (PTI) The Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) on Tuesday said it has dismantled a major interstate ganja trafficking network, seizing 847 kilograms of high-grade ganja valued at over Rs 4.2 crore in the illicit market and arrested two habitual offenders from Odisha. The operation is one of the largest and most precise anti-drug actions of 2025, targeting a supply corridor running from Malkangiri (Odisha) to Uttar Pradesh via Telangana and Karnataka, Superintendent of Police (EAGLE) Ch Rupesh said. Based on credible intelligence, teams intercepted a pick-up vehicle near Shamshabad road near here on August 4 and seized 847 kg of ganja (411 packets) from the vehicle, and arrested the two persons– Khilla Dhana and Rajendar B. According to an official release, Ramesh Sukri (absconding) operated as the central coordinator from Malkangiri, linked to both arrested accused through their village network. His associate, Jagadish Kuldeep, procured bulk ganja from cultivators like Shibo and Basu in remote forest areas, they said. Ten days ago, the syndicate's primary buyer, Shaffiq from Uttar Pradesh, personally handed over the pick-up vehicle to Ramesh, instructing that it be loaded with 800 kg of ganja and delivered to UP by handing over at Shamshabad, it said. The syndicate's method was precise: ganja was first moved in small loads from fields to safe village outskirts, then repacked in bags containing brown-tape-wrapped packets to mask odour. Drivers used Bengaluru National Highway and Outer Ring Road bypasses to avoid checkpoints and handovers were arranged at city outskirts to minimise exposure, the release said. Communication was restricted to basic feature phones with fresh SIMs, discarded after trips. For security, Khilla carried a sword hidden among the bags. This system had allowed the syndicate to complete multiple large deliveries without interception – until the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement's action ended their run, it said. This action has crippled a major ganja supply route to North India, the release said, adding efforts are underway to nab the absconding accused. Financial investigation and property attachment proceedings will be initiated under the NDPS Act and BNSS, it said.
