Djokovic sets another record at Wimbledon and jokes about sipping margaritas on beach with rivals
It was Djokovic's 99th match win at Wimbledon overall, and the 19 third-round appearances put him one ahead of Roger Federer for most by any man in the Open Era.
It's hardly the most prestigious record for Djokovic, whose 24 Grand Slam titles — including seven at Wimbledon — are the most by a male player. But he could at least use it to poke fun at his new, and much younger, main rivals.
'Nineteen times, that's a great stat,' said the 38-year-old Djokovic. 'That's probably almost as much as Sinner and Alcaraz have years in their lives.'
Well, not quite.
Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Djokovic in the last two Wimbledon finals, is 22, while No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner — who was playing later on Centre Court — is 23.
The growing rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz — especially in the wake of their five-set final at the French Open last month — has helped tennis move on from the era of the Big Three, where Djokovic is the last man standing after Federer and Rafael Nadal retired.
But Djokovic is too focused on proving he can still win another Slam to sit back and reflect on everything he has accomplished at Wimbledon.
'I don't pause to reflect, to be honest. I don't have time,' Djokovic said in an on-court interview. 'I would like to. But I think that's going to come probably when I set the racket aside and then sip margarita on the beach with Federer and Nadal and just reflect on our rivalry and everything.'
Against Evans, Djokovic failed to convert his first nine break points in the first set. But once he got the breakthrough for a 5-3 lead — raising both arms in the air as if to say 'finally' — he went five-for-six on break points the rest of the way.
'You have these kinds of days where everything goes your way,' said Djokovic, who didn't face a break point of his own until the final game. 'Everything flows.'
What else happened Thursday at Wimbledon?
No. 7-seeded Mirra Andreeva and No. 10 Emma Navarro both advanced in straight sets. The 18-year-old Andreeva earned a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, and Navarro cruised past Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 6-2. No. 11 Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, beat Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1.

Scariolo had announcement Wednesday that he would not continue with the national team after the 24-team tournament — Europe's continental championship — ends in September. Madrid parted ways with coach Chus Mateo and said that Scariolo will arrive on a three-year contract until June 2028. 'Scariolo, one of the most prestigious coaches in world basketball, arrives at Real Madrid after a brilliant career at the helm of the Spanish national team, where he has become the most successful coach in its history,' the club said in its announcement. Scariolo helped lead Spain to eight medals: five gold (2019 World Cup, 2009 EuroBasket, 2011 EuroBasket, 2015 EuroBasket and 2022 EuroBasket), one silver (2012 London Olympics) and two bronze (2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and 2017 EuroBasket). The Italian was an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors when it won the NBA title in the 2018-19 season. The 64-year-old Scariolo was in his second stint with Spain. He had previously coached Madrid from 1999-2002. Spain is the defending EuroBasket champion. World champion Spain routs Portugal 5-0 in their Euro 2025 opener
BERN (AP) — Esther González scored twice and world champion Spain delivered a statement of intent by routing Portugal 5-0 in their Women's European Championship opener on Thursday. The 32-year-old González became the oldest player to score for Spain, minutes before 18-year-old Vicky López became the youngest. Spain captain Alexia Putellas also scored for La Roja, showing she's ready to lead the team to success after missing Euro 2022 with a knee injury. Spain lost to eventual winner England in the quarterfinals of that tournament. 'We've been talking about how motivated we are for this (Euro) for so long, and now we had to show it. We have reason to be pleased,' Putellas told Spanish broadcaster TVE. Substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto completed the scoring with a header in stoppage time. González wasted little time before opening the scoring after 87 seconds with a flick past Inês Pereira. It quickly became apparent the Portugal goalkeeper would have a busy game. She did. Pereira did well to clear a cross but was unable to stop Mariona Caldentey giving López a tap-in minutes later. Only 24 minutes were played when the fans started a Mexican wave around the nearly 30,000-capacity Wankdorf Stadium, normally home to Swiss Super League team Young Boys. The club also has a women's team, which is also called Young Boys. Spain dominated possession in a textbook first-half display. Teammates' work off the ball ensured there was always a passing option. No player had the ball for long as it zipped around and the Portuguese players were left to chase it. Putellas went close, Pereira denied Clàudia Pina, and it was no surprise when Putellas finally got the third goal after she displayed some brilliant control to evade a defender in the 41st. The fourth came two minutes later when González tucked in the rebound after Pina's cross came back off the post. But Spain coach Montse Tomé may have concerns about her team's second-half performance as her players' level of control dropped. Martin-Prieto's late goal was the only addition. Spain didn't need Aitana Bonmatí. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner stayed on the substitutes bench until going on for López in the 81st. Wimbledon: Sonmez becomes first Turkish player in Open Era to reach third round of a Slam
LONDON (AP) — Zeynep Sonmez became the first Turkish player in the professional era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament by beating Xinyu Wang 7-5, 7-5 at Wimbledon on Thursday. She hopes her win ensures it won't be that long before another Turkish player reaches that stage. 'My mom and the people in my team told me that there were videos where kids were watching me back at home, in tennis clubs on TV,' Sonmez said. 'And I hope they get inspired or they feel like, 'Oh, we can do that too.'' No Turkish man or woman had made the third round of a major since the Open Era began in 1968, although Cagla Buyukakcay made the second round at three Grand Slams between 2016-17. One has to go back 75 years to find the last Turkish woman to make it that far, when Bahtiye Musluoglu reached the third round of the French Open in 1950. The 23-year-old Sonmez was supported by a number of Turkish fans in the crowd and took selfies with some of them after the match. 'I feel that there are a lot of Turkish people (here) and it makes me very happy,' she said. Sonmez has a WTA title under her belt, at last year's Merida Open, but had lost in the first round in three previous major tournaments. This is her first Wimbledon appearance.
