CM directs registration of non-registered restaurants, marriage halls

LAHORE: A decision has been made to immediately register unregistered restaurants and marriage halls in Punjab. Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed to take prompt measures for the registration of all small and large restaurants as well as marriage halls across the province. The Chief Minister while chairing a special meeting approved the decision for the registration of all restaurants and marriage halls across Punjab. The Chief Minister rejected all proposals to enhance taxes. She directed the relevant institutions to expand the tax net instead of merely increasing the tax rate. She asserted, 'Increasing taxes to place unnecessary burden on the public will not be permitted and tolerated at any cost. The owners of restaurants and marriage halls who get themselves registered should not be punished while the tax evaders should not be allowed to go scot-free under any circumstance.' The Chief Minister emphasized that the government does not want to place any sort of financial burden on the common man. She highlighted, 'A person earning Rs200,000 pays tax regularly, while those earning millions do not pay any tax and wilfully indulge into tax evasion.' She also directed the Punjab Revenue Authority, Mines & Minerals, and other government departments to explore new measures to generate as well as enhance revenue in the province. Pakistan rejects Modi's misleading remarks

Modi likely to skip G-7 summit in Canada amid cold war between two countries. PHOTO: FILE Listen to article Pakistan firmly rejected the baseless and misleading remarks made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), and making hollow claims of development in the disputed territory. In a statement, Foreign Office spokesperson stated that such statements represented a deliberate attempt to deflect international attention from the grave and persistent human rights violations being committed in a territory under foreign occupation. The Foreign Office statement came after Modi made his first visit to IIOJK since the April 22 Pahalgam attack triggered a four-day war between the two nuclear-armed countries. During the visit, Modi launched a string of development projects for the disputed territory. "We are deeply dismayed that the Indian Prime Minister has once again chosen to accuse Pakistan of involvement in the Pahalgam attack, without presenting a single piece of credible evidence," the Foreign Office statement said. "Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognised disputed territory, the final status of which is to be determined in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the will of the Kashmiri people. No amount of rhetoric can change this legal and historical reality," it added. "Claims of development in IIOJK ring hollow against the backdrop of an unprecedented military presence, suppression of fundamental freedoms, arbitrary arrests, and a concerted effort to alter the region's demography in violation of international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention." The Foreign Office reiterated that Pakistan remained steadfast in its principled support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for their rights and dignity. It urged the international community to hold India accountable for its reign of oppression in IIOJK.

P&G to cut 7,000 jobs, exit brands

Listen to article Procter & Gamble will cut 7,000 jobs over the next two years as the Tide detergent maker contends with an uncertain spending environment, fuelled in part by US tariffs that have roiled numerous consumer companies. The world's largest consumer goods company also plans to exit some product categories and brands in certain markets, including some potential divestitures, as part of the broader two-year restructuring plan. "This is not a new approach, rather an intentional acceleration of the current strategy ... to win in the increasingly challenging environment in which we compete," executives said at a Deutsche Bank Consumer Conference in Paris on Thursday. The job cuts amount to about 6% of its workforce, which P&G characterised as part of its ongoing strategy. Notably, CFO Andre Schulten and operations head Shailesh Jejurikar said at the conference that the geopolitical environment was "unpredictable" and that consumers were facing "greater uncertainty." President Donald Trump's sweeping levies on trading partners have shaken global markets and sparked concerns of a recession in the United States. P&G on Thursday estimated about a $600 million before-tax hit in its fiscal year 2026, based on current tariff rates. The rates have frequently changed over the past few months. Overall, the trade war has cost companies at least $34 billion in lost sales and higher costs, a Reuters' analysis showed.
