Profits rise at NI family firm despite £200m fall in turnover

W&R Barnett Holdings saw profits before tax go up despite a reduction in turnover to £1.5bn in the financial year ending 31 July 2024.
The holding company brings together different enterprises including commodity trading, storage and agribusiness firms, all held as subsidiaries.
It is a fourth-generation family business, having been founded in 1896 as a grain merchant.
The company now also deals in bulk commodities, derivatives, molasses, feed mills and furniture manufacturing.
The most recently-published accounts reveal 'satisfactory' company performance, in the opinion of the directors.
The directors state: 'Turnover decreased in the year due to falling commodity prices of both paper and feed ingredients, with volumes stable year on year.
'Profitability increased during the year due to improved trading conditions.'
W&R Barnett Holdings made three major acquisitions in the period covered by the accounts: Challenge Packaging Limited in December 2023, a 85% stake in Andean Life Limited in 31 January and in March 2024 a 100% purchase of K-Bins Limited.
These acquisitions have continued beyond the period covered by the accounts, with the purchase of a majority position in English furniture manufacturer the Symphony Group.
Turnover at the holding company fell by 13% between the 2024 and 2024 financial years, from £1.8bn to £1.57bn.
The company's margins were helped by a proportional fall in net operating expenses of 14%, from £1.74bn to £1.5bn.
There were also increases to some areas of income, with interest receivable getting a 66% boost from £4.4m to £7.3m.
The directors also describe their balance sheet as 'strong', with cash at bank and in hand staying around £126m across the two years.
The amount owed to creditors due within one year was also largely consistent, with a £2m rise to £190m in 2024, while money owed by debtors dropped by £10m to £204m. There was also a 74% rise in the value of investments, from £30m to £52m.
Average monthly staff numbers rose by over 100 at W&R Barnett, from 1,703 to 1,806, while there was a 12% increase in total staff costs, as that figure rose from £83.4m to £93.6m.
Overall, the holding company saw an 8% growth in profits before tax between 2023 and 2024, rising from £61.9m to £66.9m.
The director's report says the firm is continuing to 'invest in research and development', including in the "manufacturing of animal feeds and the manufacture and design of corrugated board, cases and packaging solutions'.
Recent years have seen W&R Barnett Holding ranked as one of Northern Ireland's most successful companies both for revenue and profits before tax. It was eighth in the Belfast Telegraph Top 100 Companies in partnership with Grant Thornton in 2025.

Work is set to start this summer at Power Court and there are plans for the club to move in for the 2028–29 season. Stunning designs show a "halo" floodlight system that hangs above the pitch, a state-of-the-art hospitality section and the Hatters also want it to be able to host concerts. The move will see Luton leave the 12,000-seater Kenilworth Road, which has been their home since 1905. It comes despite the club suffering back-to-back relegations to League One from the Premier League. Luton chief Gary Sweet said: "This is a transformative opportunity for the Club, helping us realise our ambitions to be a Premier League club again one day. 'We are united with the supporters on the need for a new stadium to move our Luton Town forward and we are delighted to be moving into this exciting construction phase. 'Importantly, this new stadium project roots us in our community, bringing jobs and investment as part of the wider regeneration of the area. Leaked footage shows shocking state of Barcelona's Nou Camp as club 'consider delaying new stadium opening' 'It has been a long road to this point, but we are so excited at the prospect of welcoming our supporters to Power Court in the near future and the ability to extend our support base and enhance our unique match-day experience.' The Power Court Stadium is Limak's first job in the UK. They already have projects across 14 other countries and have previously built stadiums in Turkey. Limak claim they have been approached by other English sides about renovating other grounds. Meanwhile, Barca's Camp Nou modernisation has been delayed again and they risk starting another season away from their spiritual home.

Arne Slot makes 'wait and see' admission on Liverpool transfers after £300m summer spend

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is more than willing to spend even more on his squad before the summer transfer window closes but he's been keen to underline how much quality they've lost Liverpool may have spent £300m so far in this window and plan to splash even more cash before it slams shut. But boss Arne Slot admits he won't know if they've upgraded their squad until the new recruits really settle in and all their business is done on September 1. ‌ Not that the Dutchman doubts any of the signings and their qualities but he knows adapting to English football and the physicality will be a test. ‌ The Reds have brought in striker Hugo Ekitike for £79m, playmaker Florian Wirtz for potentially up to £116m, versatile defender Jeremie Frimpong for £29m, left-back Milos Kerkez for £40m and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for £30m. ‌ But they have lost regular starters with Luis Diaz leaving for Bayern Munich in a £65m deal while right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold departed as his contract expired. Darwin Nunez is set to be sold to Al-Hilal while defender Jarell Quansah went to Bayer Leverkusen and back-up keeper Caoimhin Kelleher headed to Brentford. They also had the tragic loss of Diogo Jota in a car crash. All those players Slot knew what they could do and couldn't do so now he will be seeing what the new boys can deliver ahead of tomorrow's Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace. When asked if he feels the squad has been upgraded, he said: 'That is something I can only tell you at the 1st of September, because the window is still three weeks open. So I do feel that the players we've brought in have done already really well, as expected, because that's why we brought them in. ‌ 'But I cannot tell you now if these players are able to perform at the same level every three days, therefore we first have to start the season [to see]. And I did know that Luis Diaz was able to do that, and all the other ones were able to do that. So that is another challenge at the Premier League, because we play so many games. "And for Milos Kerkez, it's going to be his first time probably, that at this level he might have to play every three days. Florian Wirtz comes from the Bundesliga, where he was used to playing every three or four days, but we have to ask him in two months if the intensity levels of the Premier League are comparable with the Bundesliga. ‌ 'So in terms of talent and the quality we've brought in, we see that we have a very good team again. But we have to wait and see, will they stay fit? So the ones that have left were almost the whole season fit. [Will] all the ones that we brought in do the same? 'So there are multiple factors you need to take into account. But again, I am really happy with the players we've brought in. 'But we've also lost starters that have had a big impact on our title-winning season last year.' ‌ It is something that clearly irks Slot that Liverpool 's spending is being talked about more than the players they have lost or moved on in this window. He feels it is more replacing and rebuilding rather than adding to the side which won the Premier League title at a canter last season. 'What I feel is not being talked about enough - although you have to make your own decision when you talk about it - [is that] I've lost four players that have started regularly,' said Slot. "And one of them, I, we, his family, lost him. That's Diogo. Then Darwin might be on the verge of leaving. Luis Diaz was a definite starter, and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] was a definite starter. 'So normally in the Premier League, teams only buy, and never sell. We do both. We lost players in a good phase of their career. I'm used to that, and it sometimes gives new energy as well.'
