Athletes Unlimited Softball League opens with high hopes and support from MLB and USA Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Athletes Unlimited Softball League made its debut after a year of buildup and a recent collaboration with Major League Baseball. The Bandits beat the Talons 3-1 in the first game Saturday in Rosemont, Illinois. The Volts were set to play the Blaze in Wichita, Kansas later in the day. 'I kind of feel like we blinked and it was here,' Cat Osterman, general manager of the Volts, said. 'But then there were moments where it felt like we weren't ever going to get here either because it took a whole year of process. We're all excited.' Athletes Unlimited has featured softball since 2020, when it unveiled a unique format that crowned an individual champion. The organization that focuses exclusively on women's sports now has launched a traditional four-team softball league in a traveling format. The Blaze, Volts, Bandits and Talons will play 24 games each, touring to 12 cities. The top two teams will compete in the best-of-three AUSL Championship from July 26-28 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. MLB said last month that it is making a strategic investment in the league. It will include an undisclosed amount for operational costs and a commitment to help it gain visibility. It will market the AUSL and its athletes during its All-Star Game, throughout the postseason and during broadcasts on the MLB Network and streams on USA Softball executive director Craig Cress likes the fact that a league with MLB's backing exists for players to join after their college careers. He sees it as an opportunity to keep the top American players facing elite competition so Team USA will be ready for Olympic softball that will be played in Oklahoma City in 2028. Japan has won the past two Olympic gold medals in the sport. Cress said he hopes the AUSL emerges as something comparable to Japan's well-established softball leagues. 'We have a great respect and a great rivalry,' Cress said of the history with Japan. 'But this Olympics on our home soil is our gold medal. We need to go get it. So from that standpoint, I know we've got a long way to go, but that's the end goal.' Cress said it was smart for Athletes Unlimited to add former MLB executive Kim Ng as commissioner and to seek out the league as a partner. He hopes the AUSL can catch fire the way the WNBA has the past two years with Caitlin Clark. 'The WNBA is now starting to really do some things with the star power they have coming in,' he said. 'But what got them to the point to be able to keep their athletes from going overseas to play? It was the involvement of the NBA.' There are indicators that this league could last longer than those that have come and gone over the years, starting with the well-structured support system, stability and the experience Athletes Unlimited had with the sport before launching this league. 'I think that one thing you hear about Athletes Unlimited from anybody that's been around it is we've done what we said we were going to do,' Athletes Unlimited co-founder Jon Patricof said. 'We've been around now for five years.' Bri Ellis, who was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year for Arkansas this season, played for the Talons on Saturday after being the No. 2 overall pick in the AUSL draft last month. She said she's thrilled about the timing of the league's rollout. 'It was kind of this relief that I don't have to be done now,' she said. 'I can keep going and keep playing and there's still a story to be written for me in my career, and so I'm just really grateful for everyone that's come before me and has worked their tails off to get the sport to where it is now.' ___ AP sports:

LSU football makes cut for elite five-star offensive linemen after official visit
LSU football target Immanuel Iheanacho listed the Tigers in his top four, according to On3's Hayes Fawcett on Friday. The five-star offensive lineman is down to LSU, Oregon, Penn State, and Auburn. The Ducks remain the frontrunners, as On3's Prediction Machine gives them an 86.1% chance of landing Iheanacho's commitment. Steve Wiltfong logged this prediction in mid-May. Advertisement Iheanacho took his official visit to Baton Rouge on May 30, with trips to the other three schools scheduled for June. He ranks as the No. 3 prospect in the 2026 class, second at his position and first out of Maryland. The Baltimore native would add to the SEC's top class in the cycle as the third offensive lineman. Jalen Chapman and Brysten Martinez locked in their decisions, both Louisiana natives. Iheanacho would be a huge get for LSU as it looks to cement the top spot across the country among 2026 recruiting class. All four major recruiting services rank Iheanacho as the No. 2 offensive tackle in the class, behind Miami commit Jackson Cantwell. Advertisement With offensive line coach Brad Davis and tight ends coach Alex Atkins, LSU has two of the top offensive line recruiters in the country. LSU's top linemen usually come from Louisiana, but LSU has the resources to land a national five-star. LSU's recruiting class ranks No. 2 in the country with USC holding the top spot. Walter P. Carter Neighborhood pool opens in Northeast Baltimore
The rain on Saturday morning did not stop Baltimore City from unofficially kicking off summer. Local leaders and community members made a big 'splash' as they welcomed the brand-new Walter P. Carter Neighborhood Pool in Wilson Park. Jill Carter said it is more than a pool— it's her father's legacy. "Walter P. Carter was my father. Walter P. Carter was a man, a living, breathing man who stood for uncompromising principles and integrity," said Jill Carter, Walter P. Carter's daughter and former District 41 State Senator. Carter's father is the reason she spent her Saturday morning celebrating the grand opening of the brand-new pool. "His last words on Earth— public words– were I will commit the rest of my life to making this city a fit place where our kids can live, and this is a testament to that. This is a legacy of that. This is a place where our children can come," Carter explained. Community members, Mayor Brandon Scott, and Baltimore City Recreation & Parks jumped in to help mark the occasion while emphasizing the importance of having a safe place to swim. "We want them to come and have fun in a safe way. Never swim when there isn't a lifeguard. Make sure your parents sign you up for Rec Pro so you can get into the pool," said Mayor Scott. New Baltimore City pool renovations The Walter P. Carter pool is part of the City's "Rec Rollout" initiative. It's one of three redesigned facilities opening this summer. "It is right there in their neighborhood for them to go to, to swim with their friend, and swim with their neighbors, and enjoy their pool," said Karen Jordan, the Deputy Director for Baltimore City Recreation & Parks. For years, Rec and Parks has been prioritizing renovations and repairs to address the aging infrastructure of city pools. Throughout 2024, the city made upgrades to multiple community pools. Patterson Park Pool reopened in May 2024 after being closed the previous summer for extensive renovations. The closure angered community members due to the sweltering heat in August 2023. The pool now features a brand-new mechanical system, piping, plumbing, drains, and a pool liner. Neighborhood pools, like at Walter P. Carter, will operate Monday through Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. "If you want to exercise, we have lap lanes. If you just want to come and get wet and enjoy yourself, we have that as well. But we also have furniture and other amenities so that you can come and just enjoy yourself at our pools," Moore told WJZ. Park pools will expand their schedule starting June 17, operating Monday through Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Weekend hours remain 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
