LKM stresses storytelling as key to cocoa industry growth

Borneo Post22-04-2025
Matbali, LKM Director-General Datuk Dr Ramle Kasin, SJA President Mariah Doksil, invited guests and the media practitioners during the dinner last night.
KOTA KINABALU (April 22): The Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) believes that the development of the cocoa industry is not solely about export and production figures, but also about building a compelling narrative.
LKM Director-General Datuk Dr Ramle Kasin said the narrative of hope, resilience, innovation and community impact must be widely shared.
'In this regard, we view the collaboration between LKM and the media not merely as a communication need, but as a strategic plan that must be developed together — sharing stories and news content that can holistically advance the nation's cocoa industry.
'In terms of export and production achievements, I'm pleased to share that the cocoa sector continues to grow and has recorded positive performance,' he said at the Media and Strategic Partners Appreciation Night here yesterday.
He said that in 2024, Malaysia recorded export earnings of RM15.06 billion, showing an increase of RM6.86 billion — an 83.66 percent rise compared to RM8.20 billion in 2023.
Local cocoa production also saw an increase, with a total of 445.37 metric tonnes.
As such, he said this year LKM is planning more high-impact communication initiatives, particularly in the lead-up to the Malaysia International Cocoa Fair (MICF) 2025, which will be held in Sabah.
'We want Malaysia's cocoa story to be told not only to the people of Malaysia but also on the global stage, and we are confident that only through close collaboration with the media can this be achieved.
'LKM also welcomes proposals from the media for collaborative efforts such as journalism workshops related to the cocoa industry, media familiarisation programs, and joint publications of special features. We are ready to listen, discuss and act,' he said.
Meanwhile, Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil said that in Malaysia, media practitioners carry a significant responsibility as the role of journalists is to report accurate, verified and responsible information to the public.
'Looking at LKM's perspective, in my view, an industry's story is not just about reporting numbers. Not all media content is based on export and production statistics.
'For those of us in the creative industry, storytelling can come from many angles.
'Stories about cocoa plantations and bean production, we may often read about them in print or watch them on electronic media but if we delve deeper into the lives of communities around the plantations, stories of youth returning to their villages to work on cocoa farms, innovation and technological adaptation in remote areas, and grassroots stories from the cocoa downstream sector … these are all stories of great value,' she said.
According to her, such stories are not only of interest to the local community but also serve as a joint effort to place Sabah on the radar of investors and global industry players.
She said SJA is ready to continue offering support, whether through coverage or storytelling, to add value to the cocoa industry in the state.
'We also welcome the organisation of the Malaysia International Cocoa Fair 2025, which will be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) next month.
'Undoubtedly, a world-class platform such as this will bring wide-ranging benefits to the local economy and the people at large,' she said.

Rising Cocoa Prices Spark Strong Return Potential For Growers -- LKM

REGION - SARAWAK > NEWS KUCHING, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- World cocoa prices are currently on the rise, thus making the crop a commodity with high potential to generate lucrative returns. The Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) in a statement today said that in 2024, the average price of dry cocoa beans grew by 141 per cent to RM24,274 per tonne compared to RM10,073 per tonne in the previous year. 'The Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Programme for the Plantation Sector will be implemented by the board from 2025 to 2030 with an allocation of RM550,000 per year. bootstrap slideshow 'Via this programme, LKM will distribute high-quality cocoa seedlings for free, provide technical guidance, practical training and continuous monitoring to ensure that cocoa planting is carried out according to the best agricultural practices,' the board said. So far, it said, several Malaysian plantation companies have participated in the programme, with a total area of 360 hectares. Companies selected to participate in the programme would receive incentives in the form of 5,000 high-quality cocoa seedlings worth RM50,000, in addition to technical advisory services including nursery development, planting systems and others, it said. 'Within five years, the programme aims to expand the cocoa plantation area by 2,750 hectares nationwide. 'The plantation sector is an important driver in increasing cocoa production sustainably to meet the demand of local manufacturers, while supporting efforts to make Malaysia a producer of premium cocoa and 'single origin' cocoa beans, which are increasingly gaining traction in the world market,' said LKM. Earlier, LKM organised the Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Engagement Programme for the Plantation Sector for the Sarawak Region here today.

JPJ seals 270 luxury vehicles without road tax, insurance coverage through Ops Luxury

The operation is being carried out continuously across all states to take firm action against luxury vehicles being driven without a valid motor vehicle licence (LKM) or insurance. – Bernama photo JOHOR BAHRU (Aug 16): The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has seized 270 luxury vehicles nationwide for not having valid road tax and insurance under Ops Luxury, carried out since July 1. Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the operation is being carried out continuously across all states to take firm action against luxury vehicles being driven without a valid motor vehicle licence (LKM) or insurance. 'This operation is a stern measure against luxury vehicles that are being driven without paying road tax, with some also without insurance coverage. The vehicles will be detained and seized until the owners settle all outstanding road tax, insurance, and summonses before they are released,' he told a press conference at JPJ Taman Daya recently. Also present were JPJ senior director (Enforcement) Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan and Johor JPJ director Azmil Zainal Adnan. Aedy said the seized vehicles included a Ferrari in Johor Bahru, which was without road tax and insurance, a Lamborghini Huracán with an annual road tax of RM12,000, and a Rolls-Royce in Kuala Lumpur with unpaid road tax of RM29,000 per year. He revealed that some of the vehicles had not had their road tax renewed for more than a year, with one case in Kuala Lumpur involving a lapse of up to three years, where the owner claimed to have 'forgotten' to renew it. 'Ops Luxury will be expanded nationwide, including to Perlis, Sabah, and Sarawak. This is not a one-off action, but a continuous effort. 'We do not want luxury vehicles on the road without valid road tax and insurance, as the risks to public safety in the event of an accident are extremely high,' he said. Aedy added that legal action has been taken against several vehicle owners in court, while those who have settled their road tax and insurance arrears have been allowed to reclaim their vehicles. – Bernama Aedy Fadly Ramli lead luxury vehicles road tax Road Transport Department

Sibu journalists get gadget vouchers, flight subsidies from association

SIBU: The Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) has rolled out two new welfare benefits for its members, including a RM250 gadget voucher and RM200 flight subsidy. SJA deputy chairman Mohamad Alhadi Shamsawi said the RM250 PC Image voucher will be distributed in 2026 to help journalists upgrade their work equipment. 'Many journalists use their own money to buy gadgets for assignments, so this initiative aims to ease their burden,' he said at the SJA Sibu Hawana 2025 Dinner. The RM200 subsidy is for members purchasing flight tickets under a Communications Ministry and AirAsia partnership offering 50% discounts to ASEAN destinations. 'If a discounted ticket costs RM400, members can claim RM200 cashback from SJA,' he explained. Alhadi also announced RM100 birthday 'angpao' for members born between July and December 2025, following a similar payout earlier this year. SJA introduced the Tokoh Wartawan SJA 2025 Award, honouring veteran journalists with a trophy and RM1,500 cash prize. This year's recipient is former Bernama correspondent Edward Subeng Stephen, who served in journalism for over 40 years. Alhadi said these efforts reflect SJA's commitment to supporting members' welfare regardless of their media organisation. - Bernama
