Wallabies player responds after teammate accused of devious act in loss to Lions

Yahoo5 days ago
Wallabies lock Nick Frost says his men aren't listening to the 'outside noise' after teammate Carlo Tizzano was accused of 'diving' to try and win a late penalty in the crushing second Test defeat to the British and Irish Lions. Tizzano was at the centre of the game's biggest controversy, with suggestions he was taken out illegally before Hugo Keenan's match-winning try for the Lions, with 45 seconds left.
Tizzano was left clutching at his neck after Lions star Jac Morgan appeared to hit him high during the clearout that led to the series-clinching try. The Aussies appealed for a penalty but the incident was ultimately cleared by the television match official and the referee, despite Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt claiming the decision went against rugby's strict 'push for player safety'.
Former Wallabies star Morgan Turinui was the most vocal critic after pointing out on Nine's broadcast that the Lions player made dangerous contact with the Aussie's neck and insisted it should have been a penalty to Australia. But former Lions and England flanker James Haskell said it was a perfectly executed clearout from Morgan and claimed the Wallabies player should have been 'red-carded' for play-acting.
'Honestly, I never get that passionate about stuff, but I could not believe from every fibre of my being that it was even a thing," he said on The Good, The Bad and The Rugby podcast about Australia's penalty claims. 'Only bit of foul play and nonsense in that incident was the Australian player diving. That should have been red-carded because that is utter crap.
'There is no physical way to clearout a player that is that low over the ball. The only way you used to be able to do it was put your head underneath him, but you go head on head. When you're that low over the ball, you've got a small window and you either get your arms underneath him, or you get your head underneath him. You have to hit where he hit... It is the only way to clearout, there is no other way to do it."
Wallabies star defends teammate but admits Aussies faltered
But Frost says the Wallabies are paying no attention to the backlash from former Lions players that has been shared across the UK's media. The Wallabies flanker defended his teammate over the staging accusations, but said regardless of whether it was a penalty or not, the incident masked a bigger picture around the manner of Australia's defeat.
The Wallabies were in a position to send the three-Test series into a decider in Sydney on Saturday night after jumping out to an 18-point lead. But they were unable to close out the second Test as the Lions stormed home at the MCG.

"There were so many moments up until that where we could have capitalised," Frost told reporters. "We had a pretty decent lead in that first half, and we gave away a few tries. It doesn't always come down to the refs ... At the end of the day, you can't really rely right at the end for a decision there. If you're relying on that, you probably haven't done enough work throughout the game."
The Wallabies now turn their attentions to Saturday's third Test in Sydney, where they will be hoping to avoid the unwanted history of a first three-Test series whitewash at home to the Lions, since 1904. "There is something to lose. It's a Test match," Frost said. "There's a bit of fire in the belly from the last couple of games ... And again, like it's a Lions series, it's our last time... to play against them."

Four free agents yet to find new clubs this summer

It's been over a a month since this summer's free agents came out of contact, but several are yet to find new homes. We've looked at five former Premier League players who remain free agents as we enter August. Four free agents yet to find new clubs this summer Takehiro Tomiyasu Arsenal announced that month that the club had reached a mutual agreement with Takehiro Tomiyasu to end his contract with immediate effect. The Japan international impressed after his arrival from Bologna in 2021 but has been plagued by fitness problems in recent seasons. Tomiyasu featured for just six minutes in the Premier League last season and has started just 16 league games over the last three campaigns. The defender is expected to be out until October but could prove an attractive option for sides in search of depth on a budget. Though his injury record is a huge concern, Tomiyasu's age (26) and ability to operate right across the backline appeals. Dominic Calvert-Lewin Dominic Calvert-Lewin called time on his Everton career last month, after nine seasons at Goodison Park. The forward is another who has suffered with injury problems, failing to rediscover the form that saw him break into the England squad between 2020 and 2021. He scored just three league goals last season, though remains a brilliant aerial option for sides focused on a more direct approach. At 28, he will feel there's plenty left in the tank. Victor Lindelof Victor Lindelof is available on a free transfer after eight seasons at Manchester United. The Sweden international has departed the Red Devils after 284 appearances in all competitions. The 31-year-old's future remains clear despite transfer talks, as sides consider swooping to sign the experienced defender. Josh Brownhill Burnley have lost a pivotal part of their promotion-winning side after Josh Brownhill opted against signing a new contract at Turf Moor. The 29-year-old scored 18 goals and added six assists from midfield last season, with only Leeds United striker Joel Piroe outscoring Brownhill in the Championship. Leicester City are understood to have offered the midfielder a contract, as the Foxes rebuild after relegation from the Premier League last season. Report: Liverpool's £79m striker wows teammates with early training form

Ekitike Makes Immediate Impact at Liverpool Hugo Ekitike has wasted little time settling into life at Liverpool, impressing his new teammates and coaching staff during early pre-season preparations. Following his £79 million move from Eintracht Frankfurt, the 23-year-old forward is already turning heads at the AXA Training Centre. The French striker joined the Premier League champions after a standout campaign in the Bundesliga, where he scored 22 goals and recorded 12 assists in all competitions. His performances in Germany attracted attention from several top clubs, but it was Liverpool who acted decisively to secure his signature – beating competition from domestic rivals, including Newcastle United. Despite arriving with considerable expectations, Ekitike has quickly exceeded them. His integration into the squad, according to TBR Football's Graeme Bailey, has been described as seamless, with some long-standing players reportedly surprised by how naturally the forward has adapted to the group's dynamics and demands. Players Surprised by Ekitike's Level Liverpool's training sessions have provided early glimpses of what Ekitike can offer. Sources familiar with the internal environment describe the forward as 'dazzling' and 'technically sharp,' with one observer noting that it feels as if he has 'been part of the squad for years.' While few doubted his talent, the level of his performances in training have surpassed what some of his teammates initially anticipated. The feedback from within the camp suggests a growing sense of excitement about how Ekitike could influence Liverpool's attack next season. His work rate, intelligent movement and finishing ability have reportedly stood out. Coaching staff are said to be particularly pleased with his willingness to adapt to the club's tactical system under Arne Slot. Slot's Trust in Ekitike Growing Having guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, Slot has already made a bold impression. The club's recruitment strategy this summer – including the arrivals of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, and Milos Kerkez – has been aggressive and forward-thinking. Though Liverpool remain keen on pursuing a deal for Newcastle's Alexander Isak, their initial approach was turned down, and progress has since stalled. As it stands, Ekitike is expected to lead the line when the new season kicks off. Slot has shown strong faith in the forward, and the early signs suggest that decision could pay off. There is belief within the club that Ekitike can shoulder the responsibility and grow into a central figure for the team both on and off the pitch. Teammates Respond Positively to New Arrival Team cohesion has been a pillar of Liverpool's recent success, and new signings are often judged as much by their off-the-ball character as their on-pitch contributions. Ekitike has reportedly made a strong impression on both fronts. His humility, combined with confidence in his own ability, has helped him build early rapport with senior players and club staff alike. One club insider described the forward as 'professional, grounded and focused,' noting that his mentality is already in line with Liverpool's high-performance culture. As the Reds prepare to defend their domestic crown and push for European success, Ekitike's integration and form will be key to shaping the campaign ahead.
