PGA Tour
The 2025 PGA Championship has been full of surprises, with more twists to the tale coming Saturday as the third round takes place at Quail Hollow.
Accomplished players like Brooks Koepka and Justin Rose have struggled, while some surprise names have emerged near the top of the leaderboard. Jhonattan Vegas' 8-under has been a huge story, while Adam Smalley — an alternate who only got to play in this major after Sahith Theegala withdrew with a neck injury — is close behind.
That said, you can't count out some of the PGA Tour's superstars. Within the top 20 scores so far, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is well within striking distance, as is Bryson DeChambeau. The circumstances are set for the third round to be pivotal.

Rory McIlroy 'pissed off' his name, not Scottie Scheffler's, was leaked for failed driver test at PGA
Rory McIlroy admitted Wednesday that he was 'pissed off' that his name had leaked after what was supposed to be confidential driver testing ahead of the PGA Championship. That failed test was just part of a 'weird week' that saw the reigning Masters champion decline to talk to the media after all four tournament rounds at Quail Hollow. McIlroy said he was 'pretty annoyed' at the report that his driver was deemed nonconforming during standard USGA equipment testing when he knew that the world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, also needed to put in a backup driver head for the year's second major. 'But my name was the one that was leaked,' McIlroy said. 'It was supposed to stay confidential.' McIlroy said, after the news broke during the second round, he didn't want to speak to the media because he didn't want to 'get up there and say something that I regretted.' 'I'm trying to protect Scottie; I didn't want to mention his name,' said McIlroy of Scheffler, who only went into detail about his failed driver test after his PGA victory on Sunday night. 'I'm trying to protect TaylorMade. I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself. I just didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted at the time. 'With Scottie's stuff, that's not my information to share. I knew that that had happened, but that's not on me to share that, and I felt that process is supposed to be kept confidential and it wasn't for whatever reason. That's why I was pretty annoyed at that.' McIlroy said logistics played a factor in his decision to skip any post-round media the other day, whether it was because of a late start, a long delay prior to his third round or just wanting to fly home after a disappointing tie for 47th in his first major start since completing the career Grand Slam. On the wider topic of post-round availability, McIlroy has been clear for months that, under the current regulations, players can steer clear of any media obligations whenever they see fit. 'If we all wanted to, we could all bypass you guys and we could go on (our phones) and do it our own way,' he said, before adding: 'We understand the benefit that comes from you being here and giving us the platform and everything else. So I understand that. But I've been beating this drum for a long time: If they want to make it mandatory, that's fine, but in our rules it says that it's not, and until the day that that's maybe written into our regulations, you're going to have guys skip from time to time, and that's well within our rights.'

Phil Mickelson knows 'high likelihood' Oakmont will be final U.S. Open appearance
GAINESVILLE, Va. — After he shocked the golf world four years ago by winning the PGA Championship at age 50, Phil Mickelson had a moment of honest self-assessment. 'It's very possible that this is the last tournament I ever win. Like if I'm being realistic,' Mickelson said on that triumphant Sunday at Kiawah Island. Mickelson hasn't won since, and while he wasn't eager to reflect Wednesday on a career that includes six major titles and just as many famous near-misses, he indicated his competitive future is limited. He said he wants to help his teammates on LIV's HyFlyers squad and would step away if he's no longer doing that. 'I'm also going to be 55 in a couple weeks, so I want to be realistic there, too. I want this team to succeed. I don't want to hold it back,' Mickelson said. 'If I'm holding it back, then it's time for me to move on and get somebody else in here.' Mickelson also acknowledged the possibility that Oakmont will be his last U.S. Open. He has a record six runner-up finishes at the national championship, the only major he hasn't won. 'There's a high likelihood that it will be,' Mickelson said, 'but I haven't really thought about it too much.' The USGA gave Mickelson a special exemption to the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, which he ultimately didn't need because he won at Kiawah a month earlier. Nonetheless, the U.S. Open historically does not grant more than one special exemption to any player, and Mickelson has missed the past three U.S. Open cuts. He remains exempt for the other three majors as a past champion.

NFL Network to air 2 Panthers games during 2025 preseason
NFL Network to air 2 Panthers games during 2025 preseason The Carolina Panthers are going to get a little extra exposure this summer. As announced on Wednesday, the NFL Network is set to cover 21 live preseason games in August—including two that feature the Panthers. Those contests will both emanate from Bank of America Stadium, with Carolina hosting the Cleveland Browns on Friday, Aug. 8 at 7:00 p.m. ET (Week 1) and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7:00 p.m. ET (Week 3). Their opener against Cleveland will be preceded by a joint practice, something head coach Dave Canales talked about earlier this offseason. "We were just both curious about getting this joint practice going into preseason, and we got excited about the format of what that could look like,' Canales said of Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski at March's league meetings. "We feel like at that point in camp, you're starting to build some good capacity to be able to handle a little bit more volume, a little higher speed, and getting the competitive element. Particularly because we both plan on playing our guys in the preseason." Carolina's second exhibition outing, which locks them up with the Houston Texans, will also follow a joint practice. That matchup is slated for Saturday, Aug. 16 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
