'Super-Earths' May Be Surprisingly Common, Scientists Reveal

Earth-like exoplanets might be more common throughout the Milky Way than previously believed, astronomers report in a new study.
The researchers discovered an unusual super-Earth orbiting its star at a Jupiter-like distance, an orbital range for which only the frequency of larger planets – gas giants and ice giants – has been determined so far.
"We found a 'super-Earth' – meaning it's bigger than our home planet but smaller than Neptune – in a place where only planets thousands or hundreds of times more massive than Earth were found before," says lead author and astrophysicist Weicheng Zang of the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
In addition to finding this seemingly quirky world, the authors combined their discovery with a larger sample of exoplanet data from a microlensing survey. Their findings indicate this planet might not be quite so quirky after all.
The researchers studied changes in apparent brightness from the planet's host star, which they incorporated into broader data from the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) survey, a trio of telescopes located in Australia, Chile, and South Africa.
By examining mass ratios between a large volume of exoplanets and host stars, the researchers shed new light on our galaxy's planetary demographics.
Their results suggest super-Earths are not limited to short-period orbits near their host stars, which is where they've primarily been found. These intriguing exoplanets can also exist farther away, with orbital periods more akin to those of our Solar System's gas giants.
It's generally harder to detect planets orbiting farther from their stars, but based on this study, Zang and his colleagues estimate one out of every three stars in the Milky Way should host a super-Earth with a Jupiter-like orbit.
"Scientists knew there were more small planets than big planets, but in this study, we were able to show that within this overall pattern, there are excesses and deficits," says co-author Andrew Gould, an astronomer at Ohio State University. "It's very interesting."
The study relied on a phenomenon called gravitational microlensing, in which a massive celestial object (serving as the lens) passes between an observer and a bright background object like a star.
If the lens is massive enough, it gravitational field will warp spacetime enough to cause the path of light from the background source to curve on its way to the observer, like light bending through a magnifying glass. This creates a temporary spike in the object's brightness, which may last for minutes or months, depending on the alignment.
The new study focuses on a microlensing event known as OGLE-2016-BLG-0007, first detected in early 2016.
Microlensing events are rare, and only a fraction of known exoplanets have been detected this way. The technique is well-suited for revealing exoplanets orbiting farther from their stars, however.
The new study is the largest of its kind to date, featuring three times as many exoplanets as previous samples, including many smaller ones.
While previous research has shown how stars can host a variety of exoplanet sizes in relatively tight orbits, the new study points to comparable planetary diversity – and profusion – in the outer regions of these planetary systems, too.
"This measurement of the planet population from planets somewhat larger than Earth all the way to the size of Jupiter and beyond shows us that planets, and especially super-Earths, in orbits outside the Earth's orbit are abundant in the galaxy," says co-author Jennifer Yee, an observational astronomer at the CfA's Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
The term 'super-Earth' typically refers to the mass of an exoplanet, not its surface conditions or habitability, about which few details are available.
Still, research like this may help demystify planetary formation and distribution in the Milky Way, building upon what our own Solar System can teach us.
"This result suggests that in Jupiter-like orbits, most planetary systems may not mirror our Solar System," says co-author Youn Kil Jung of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute that operates the KMTNet.
These findings suggest our galaxy may teem with a wide variety of exoplanets. It also offers clues about how the different types of exoplanets form, but we still need a lot more data – which is easier said than done.
"Finding a microlensing star event is hard. Finding a microlensing star with a planet is hard squared," says co-author Richard Pogge, an astronomer at Ohio State. "We have to look at hundreds of millions of stars to find even a hundred of these things."

Elon Musk seemingly backed down from a threat to decommission SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft that ferries cargo and people to the International Space Station for the U.S., made during an escalation of a spat between the billionaire and President Donald Trump. SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft is the company's primary vehicle for sending astronauts and cargo to orbit. The company has billions of dollars in contracts with NASA to send the agency's astronauts on periodic trips to and from the ISS, which helps the space agency to maintain an uninterrupted presence at the space station until its retirement by the end of 2030. Musk initially pledged to decommission the spacecraft after Trump's threat to pull Musk's governmental contracts, which was prompted by Musk's near-incessant bashing of the president's tax bill on X, his social media service. However, just hours later, he responded to a post suggesting he take a step back and cool off for a couple of days, replying 'Good advice. OK, we won't decommission Dragon.' It's unclear what exactly Musk initially meant by 'decommissioning' Dragon. SpaceX also uses its Dragon spacecraft for commercial missions, separate from the ones it performs for NASA. The company has flown six private astronaut missions on Dragon, either to fly freely in orbit or visit the International Space Station. SpaceX is scheduled to launch another private astronaut mission on Dragon as soon as June 10, in partnership with Axiom Space, sending four civilians to the ISS. NASA will 'continue to execute upon the President's vision' and work with its industry partners, agency spokesperson Bethany Stevens said in a post on X. An abrupt end to SpaceX's Dragon would leave NASA in a significant bind regarding its space station program. The vehicle is the only operational U.S. option for sending astronauts to the space station, though the agency does also rely on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft to launch NASA astronauts periodically. It's also one of the main options for keeping the space station stocked with food and supplies. NASA potentially has another U.S. option for sending crew to the space station in Boeing's Starliner. However, the vehicle is still not certified for carrying astronauts, after suffering a botched test flight in 2024 that left two astronauts on the ISS for months longer than planned. Because of engine issues with Starliner, NASA tasked SpaceX with bringing home the astronauts on a Dragon craft. SpaceX is also under contract with NASA for creating a Dragon-like vehicle that will be responsible for guiding the ISS out of orbit. Trump's Threat to Kill SpaceX Presents One Hidden Safety Concern

Because of a political fallout, tech mogul and SpaceX owner Elon Musk has now attracted the verbal ire of President Trump. While sparring over social media, the President suggested that he could and would cancel Musk's government contracts relative to SpaceX. Briefly, this led Musk to claim that SpaceX would "decommission" the crucial Dragon spacecraft, but later reversed his position, saying, "Ok, we won't decommission Dragon." This is the very same type of vessel which recently led to the rescue of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunni Williams who were stranded on the International Space Station for much longer than originally planned. And it's the fate of the International Space Station that is actually the number one reason why an utterly defunded SpaceX might be a very dangerous thing. In 2024, NASA awarded SpaceX a contract valued at $843 million. The purpose? To deorbit the International Space Station by the end of the decade. Basically, the ISS is not designed to stay in orbit forever, and before it is replaced by something more permanent, it will have to be safely moved to a low Earth orbit. This means that SpaceX is currently tasked by the U.S. government to build the United States Deorbit Vehicle (USDV). "Selecting a U.S. Deorbit Vehicle for the International Space Station will help NASA and its international partners ensure a safe and responsible transition in low Earth orbit at the end of station operations," Ken Bowersox said in a NASA statement last a hypothetical world in which Trump decides to rescind all government contracts for SpaceX, that would presumably include killing the all-important job of SpaceX building the USDV. And if SpaceX doesn't build the USDV, who will help mitigate the very real fallout of a large space station? Again, hypothetically, there are other organizations that have spacecraft, but as the stranding of Wilmore and Williams recently demonstrated, SpaceX has proven to be the most reliable way for the U.S. to get people in and out of space. In fact, the whole reason that Wilmore and Williams were stranded was because the Boeing Starliner — a rival aerospace venture to SpaceX — was unable to complete a return trip because of safety concerns. Concurrent with all of this, Blue Origin's New Glenn craft isn't even close to being ready. Notably, Blue Origin's other craft, the New Shepard, isn't designed to go far enough into space to be useful to the ISS. One might wonder if SpaceX really needs the money. And it's possible the company doesn't. As Musk pointed out on June 3, the entirety of what NASA pays to SpaceX ($1.1 billion) is dwarfed by SpaceX's current revenue ($15.5 billion). Basically, SpaceX's Starlink services are making plenty of money for the company, so if Trump rescinded even just that contract valued at roughly $800 million, it wouldn't come close to putting SpaceX out of business. Legally, Trump might be able to try and sever ties between SpaceX and the U.S. government, specifically, NASA. But practically speaking, this seems very unlikely long-term. Right now, SpaceX is the best bet for creating a safe deorbit for the ISS.
