Musk walks back threat to decommission SpaceX Dragon spacecraft
Elon Musk seemingly backed down from a threat to decommission SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft that ferries cargo and people to the International Space Station for the U.S., made during an escalation of a spat between the billionaire and President Donald Trump.
SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft is the company's primary vehicle for sending astronauts and cargo to orbit. The company has billions of dollars in contracts with NASA to send the agency's astronauts on periodic trips to and from the ISS, which helps the space agency to maintain an uninterrupted presence at the space station until its retirement by the end of 2030.
Musk initially pledged to decommission the spacecraft after Trump's threat to pull Musk's governmental contracts, which was prompted by Musk's near-incessant bashing of the president's tax bill on X, his social media service.
However, just hours later, he responded to a post suggesting he take a step back and cool off for a couple of days, replying 'Good advice. OK, we won't decommission Dragon.'
It's unclear what exactly Musk initially meant by 'decommissioning' Dragon. SpaceX also uses its Dragon spacecraft for commercial missions, separate from the ones it performs for NASA. The company has flown six private astronaut missions on Dragon, either to fly freely in orbit or visit the International Space Station.
SpaceX is scheduled to launch another private astronaut mission on Dragon as soon as June 10, in partnership with Axiom Space, sending four civilians to the ISS.
NASA will 'continue to execute upon the President's vision' and work with its industry partners, agency spokesperson Bethany Stevens said in a post on X.
An abrupt end to SpaceX's Dragon would leave NASA in a significant bind regarding its space station program. The vehicle is the only operational U.S. option for sending astronauts to the space station, though the agency does also rely on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft to launch NASA astronauts periodically. It's also one of the main options for keeping the space station stocked with food and supplies.
NASA potentially has another U.S. option for sending crew to the space station in Boeing's Starliner. However, the vehicle is still not certified for carrying astronauts, after suffering a botched test flight in 2024 that left two astronauts on the ISS for months longer than planned.
Because of engine issues with Starliner, NASA tasked SpaceX with bringing home the astronauts on a Dragon craft.
SpaceX is also under contract with NASA for creating a Dragon-like vehicle that will be responsible for guiding the ISS out of orbit. It's unclear where those plans currently stand.

In the statement, Schoen claimed that his client 'had no information to hurt President Trump.' "I was hired to lead Jeffrey Epstein's defense as his criminal lawyer 9 days before he died,' the statement began. 'He sought my advice for months before that. I can say authoritatively, unequivocally, and definitively that he had no information to hurt President Trump. I specifically asked him!" Trump's name has previously been publicly linked with Epstein. His name was mentioned in flight logs released earlier this year by Attorney General Pam Bondi a total of seven times. However, the appearance of Trump's name in the flight logs does not necessarily indicate wrongdoing, as many of the individuals named could have been on Epstein's plane for legitimate reasons. The president was friends with the disgraced financier and pedophile for many years, but the two had a falling out in the mid-2000s, Trump told reporters shortly before Epstein died by suicide in 2019. Musk's deleted claim came on the heels of a number of verbal jabs with the president following the release of a controversial new budget bill. "I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore," Musk posted to X — which he owns — on Tuesday, June 3. "This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it." During an Oval Office press conference on Thursday, June 4, Trump responded to Musk's criticisms. "Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anyone sitting here," Trump told reporters. "He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we're going to have to cut the [electric vehicle] mandate, because that's billions and billions of dollars." Musk sensationally posted on Thursday that the president's name appears in unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files — and said that's why the files haven't been made public. Musk followed the post with another, saying, "Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out." The former "First Buddy" dropped the allegation in response to a back-and-forth series of social media messages between him and Trump. But as of today, the post has been removed from the Tesla CEO's timeline. The post wasn't the only one he deleted: Musk also appears to have taken down a post endorsing a message that read, "Trump should be impeached" and that Vance "should replace him." The beef between Musk and Trump exploded onto the national scene this week with the SpaceX CEO publicly blasting Trump's major legislation, the Big Beautiful bill, for increasing the deficit by around $2.5 trillion. The feud came despite a months-long "bromance" between the pair, with Musk donating around $277 million to Trump's campaign and enthusiastically supporting his return to office. "If Elon truly thought the President was more deeply involved with Epstein, why did he hang out with him for 6 months and say he 'loves him as much as a straight man can love a straight man?'" the source said. Musk's bombshell allegation against Trump comes months after a trove of files pertaining to the Epstein case were released. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel explaining the delay in the release of documents and placing blame on an FBI field office in New York. Bondi said she requested the full Epstein case file before Patel was confirmed as the head of the FBI and received about 200 pages — far fewer than the number of pages released last year in a civil lawsuit connected to Ghisalaine Maxwell, the trafficker's former lover and convicted accomplice. Although Bondi pushed for the release of the full dossier, which included records, documents, audio and video recordings, and materials related to Epstein and his clients, the request remains unfulfilled. One of the key pieces that remains unreleased is a client list, though Bondi claimed in February it was on her desk to be reviewed. The documents that have been released so far include flight logs, an evidence list, a contact book and a redacted "masseuse list" believed to refer to Epstein's victims. Many people named in the documents have never been accused of Epstein-related wrongdoing. However, some have, like Maxwell; Prince Andrew, who has denied allegations of wrongdoing; and Jean-Luc Brunel, a French modeling agent who, like Epstein, died in a jail awaiting trial. Epstein, Maxwell and unnamed co-conspirators allegedly abused young women and underage girls between 1996 and his death in 2019, according to the lawsuit. Citing police documents, it alleges that Epstein recruited girls between 14 and 16 as well as students at Palm Beach Community College for "sex-tinged sessions." Maxwell is appealing her conviction while serving a sentence at a federal prison in Tallahassee. She is due for release in the summer of 2037. "The process in D.C., if you're a business leader, you probably get frustrated with that process because it's more, you know, bureaucratic. It's more slow-moving. So I think there's just some frustrations there."
