Tourists are flocking to 'quirky' UK village purely because of its name

Daily Mirror9 hours ago
There are plenty of reasons to visit the charming UK village but most tourists admit they're there purely because of the destination's memorable name
Usually when planning a staycation, most people will look at the hotels, attractions and restaurants on offer in a destination; but there's one tiny village in Wales that's catching people's attention purely because of its name.

While Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is hardly a new destination, in recent years thanks to social media it's continued to become increasingly popular for UK holidays, as people flock to the spot to get photos next to the village's station signs.

After all, at 58 letters long it's not one you'd see every day! The name is so lengthy that some signs have to be specially made to accommodate it. As a result, tourists are flocking there to snap a photo by the signs, with visitors having to now queue for the photo opportunity. It's a far cry from the UK's five worst seaside towns including a resort with a one-star beach.

Locals have embraced the fame with shops selling mugs, magnets and other souvenirs emblazoned with the full name.
Travel experts at walking holiday specialists Mickledore say that that name was "deliberately lengthened in the 19th century as a publicity stunt to attract visitors and boost trade". They added: "The Welsh language is known for its compound words and descriptive place names, often drawn from local geography, landmarks, or saints. In this case, the name loosely translates to 'St Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave'."
Clearly those Victorians had the right idea, as centuries later and that publicity stunt still works. In fact, it's estimated that around 200,000 tourists visit the village every year, just to snap photos right by the signs and say that they've been able to tick it off the bucket list.
"You have to visit here, just to get a photo of the signs.. There is one on the station building, and one on the platform. The station is still in use today, and there is free parking next to a small mall, where there is a nice gift shop," one happy holidaymaker wrote on Tripadvisor.
Another added: "This is the most interesting place that you mustn't miss if you visit Anglesey. The longest train station name that you can never find anywhere else, in Welsh language."
Luckily for tourists who turn up, there's more to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch than just its name. Because of its popularity, you can find everything from cosy cafés to boutiques and budget-friendly hotels in the area, not to mention it's right by the Menai Strait so it's ideal for hikers and ramblers who want to do some exploring.
Oh, and as for how you pronounce it? The Mickledore team have put together a handy explainer. They added: "The generally accepted pronunciation in Welsh is: [ɬanˌvairˌpuɬˌɡwɨnˌɡɨɬˌɡɔˌɡɛrəˌxwɨrnˌdrɔˌbʊɬˌɬanˌtəsˌɪljɔˌɡɔˌɡɔˌɡoːx]. For English speakers, that's 'clan-vire-pooll-gwin-gill-go-ger-uh-kwin-drob-ool-llan-tis-il-io-go-go-goch'."

South African couple Leanne and Dan, who document their adventures on The Buddymoon YouTube channel, have traversed the length and breadth of Wales in their van, visiting locations from Cardiff to the scenic Llŷn Peninsula. ‌ Their most recent journey took them to what they described as the "head" of Wales in the north, Ynys Môn (Anglesey). In a video titled I Guess All Good Things Must Come To An End (Wales), the couple began their exploration with a visit to the village of Llanfairpwll. ‌ After snapping the obligatory photo next to the sign at Llanfairpwll, famous for its extraordinarily long name, the duo set off in pursuit of a lighthouse they had spotted on one of Leanne's Windows wallpapers. ‌ Departing from the car park at Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest, Dan enthusiastically told viewers that they "must see" this lighthouse. Leanne expressed her admiration for the view (Image: The Buddymoon/YouTube) He explained: "We actually found it on one of Leanne's Windows wallpapers on her laptop, and I was like, 'Oh my gosh, where is that?' And little did we know it was in Wales" Article continues below Stepping onto the beach, Leanne exclaimed: "How beautiful is this view, though? Oh my gosh, I almost broke my back looking at the view. We have the Snowdonia mountains in the background and this beautiful bay. It's so, so flat." Leanne and Dan visited the much-loved local highlight of Ynys Llanddwyn (Image: The Buddymoon/YouTube) Later, she revealed they had reached what she called the "Island of the Blessed", which proved to be the beloved local gem, Ynys Llanddwyn, a small tidal island situated off Anglesey's western coastline. ‌ As the pair drew closer, Dan noted that he'd noticed a number of noisy planes overhead. Yet in the comments section, someone highlighted the location's proximity to RAF Valley, the nearby Royal Air Force base. The spot looked as beautiful as the pictures, albeit with some more clouds He noticed signage warning that drone flying was prohibited in the vicinity, leaving him somewhat deflated as he showed some of the aerial photographs of the location that he'd found online. ‌ Dan remarked: "It's just absolutely beautiful. You can see on the one side, we have the sea and on the other side, we have the sea, too. And there's actually quite a few beaches that people come here to in order to swim, but yeah, we're not doing that." In a sweet moment, the couple later shared a kiss at the landmark (Image: The Buddymoon/YouTube) Once they arrived at the "impressive" lighthouse, the couple examined the structure, though it was the surrounding view that particularly impressed Leanne, who described it as "even better" and "so pretty." 'We found North Wales landmark from Windows background and were stunned when we arrived'

A travel-vlogging couple who've been exploring the sights on offer in Wales has opened up about an "absolutely beautiful" discovery in Ynys Môn. Leanne and Dan, a South African couple who've been documenting their travels for The Buddymoon YouTube channel, have explored the breadth of the country in their van, visiting everywhere from Cardiff to the picturesque Llŷn Peninsula. Most recently, they spent time exploring what they described as the "head" of Wales in the north, Ynys Môn (Anglesey). In the video, titled ' I Guess All Good Things Must Come To An End (Wales)', Leanne and Dan started off with a visit to the village of Llanfairpwll. Once they'd taken the obligatory photo of themselves next to the sign at Llanfairpwll, known for its incredibly long name, the couple set out in search of a lighthouse they discovered on a Windows background on Leanne's laptop. Setting out from the car park at Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest, Dan excitedly declared to the viewers that you "must see" this lighthouse. He said: "We actually found it on Leanne's wallpaper on one of her Windows wallpapers on her laptop, and I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, where is that?' And little did we know it was in Wales." As she stepped out onto the beach, Leanne said: "How beautiful is this view, though? Oh my gosh, I almost broke my back looking at the view. We have the Snowdonia mountains in the background and this beautiful bay. It's so, so flat." Further on, she announced that they'd made it to what she described as the "Island of the Blessed", which turned out to be the much-loved local highlight Ynys Llanddwyn, a small tidal island off Anglesey's west coast. As the couple approached, Dan noted that he'd spotted a number of loud aircraft in the skies above them. However, in the comment section, one person pointed out the site's close proximity to RAF Valley, the local Royal Air Force station. He spotted a sign informing him that he couldn't fly his drone in the area, leaving him slightly disappointed as he displayed some of the aerial shots of the scene that he'd discovered on the internet. Dan said: "It's just absolutely beautiful. You can see on the one side, we have the sea and on the other side, we have the sea, too. And there's actually quite a few beaches that people come here to in order to swim, but yeah, we're not doing that." Once they arrived at the "impressive" lighthouse, the couple proceeded to examine the feature. Yet, it was the view that particularly impressed Leanne, who dubbed it "even better" and "so pretty". In a sweet moment, the couple were later spotted sharing a kiss as they looked out over the idyllic Welsh scene, with the lighthouse standing guard over the ocean in the distance.

Positioned as the 'outdoor capital of Wales', Rhayader is known as the gateway to the Elan Valley, but is also a destination in itself.
