Libya Observer4 days ago
The Head of the High Council of State (HCS), Mohammed Takala, met on Thursday with the European Union's ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, and discussed the latest political developments in Libya.
Orlando congratulated Takala on gaining the confidence of the High Council of State members and being elected, along with the new presidency office, according to a statement posted on the Council's Facebook page.
The HCS said the meeting focused on the latest political developments in Libya, the European Union's efforts to end the current division, foster consensus, and advance the political process toward holding free and fair elections that reflect the aspirations of the Libyan people and support the path to peace and stability.
The statement added that Orlando stressed the EU's support for the pivotal role of the High Council of State in achieving political and legislative balance, serving the interests of the country and its citizens, and contributing to Libya's regional and international reengagement.
Two days earlier, the EU Delegation to Libya congratulated the new presidency office of the High Council of State led by Takala, following similar congratulations from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya after the elections held on July 27.
Earlier on Thursday, the HCS announced that Takala received congratulatory letters from the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the Secretary-General of the Arab Maghreb Union, Tarek Ben Salem, on earning the HCS members' confidence.

European Commission concerned over suspicious flights between Minsk and Benghazi

The European news network Euractiv reported that the European Commission has launched an investigation into a series of 'suspicious' flights operated by the Belarusian airline Belavia between the Belarusian capital, Minsk, and the Libyan city of Benghazi. The network, citing senior European diplomatic sources, pointed to growing suspicions of Russian involvement in coordinating these flights and potentially facilitating irregular migration to Europe. The report referenced Russia's suspected role during the 2021 migration crisis, when Belarus allegedly enabled the movement of migrants through Eastern Europe, particularly along the borders with Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania, by organizing flights that transported migrants from the Middle East and North Africa. The network also highlighted the extent of European fears that Russia may be applying the same strategy again—this time through Libya—leading to increased migrant arrivals and efforts to destabilize the European continent. In a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the delegation explained that the proposals include mutual visa exemptions, an invitation for Libyan investors to explore opportunities in Syria, and the establishment of a joint working mechanism between the two countries. The delegation expressed Damascus's appreciation for the Libyan Foreign Ministry's decision to exempt Syrian citizens residing in and departing from Libya from penalty fees, describing the move as significant and reflective of the spirit of solidarity between the two nations. The delegation also indicated Syria's willingness to consider humanitarian cases seeking voluntary return, in coordination with the relevant Libyan authorities.
