Josh Pate believes the Sooners are loaded heading into 2025

Yahoo07-05-2025

The Oklahoma Sooners have made plenty of changes this offseason, hoping to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2024. In Year 4 under head coach Brent Venables' leadership and Year 2 in the Southeastern Conference, OU simply cannot afford another 6-7 season like the one they had last year. Otherwise, even more drastic changes will be coming to the program.
But as for 2025, many national pundits are starting to believe in Venables's moves this winter and spring. That includes Josh Pate, who hosts "Josh Pate's College Football Show" and is a college football analyst for CBS Sports. He believes the Sooners have loaded up this offseason.

"Oklahoma's made some really, really good moves here," Pate said. "Quarterback was a major concern for them and they went and got (John) Mateer out of Washington State, with his offensive coordinator (Ben Arbuckle) for good measure. Check."
The Sooners have made definite upgrades at both quarterback and offensive coordinator, two issues that derailed them a season ago. Jackson Arnold led Oklahoma is passing last year with the lowest yardage total since Jake Sills' 1998 mark in the final season of the John Blake era. Arnold struggled mightily, that's for sure, but he and the rest of the offense were hampered by having Seth Littrell at the controls. He was fired after just seven games. The duo of Joe Jon Finley and Kevin Johns finished out the season but didn't fare much better.
Mateer and Arbuckle provide familiarity with each other and proof of concept, two things Arnold and Littrell did not have. Advantage, 2025 Sooners. But while those two moves are massive, they aren't the only changes that have Pate excited about what OU can be this year.
"They got maybe the best tailback in the country that was available from Cal," Pate said.

That would, of course, be Jaydn Ott, the biggest addition for the Sooners in the spring portal window. He was banged up in 2024, but his 2023 campaign has Oklahoma fans imagining what he can do in the backfield alongside Mateer. The Sooners have had to go running back by committee since Eric Gray moved on to the NFL, and have the pieces to do so again this year. But Ott provides a player that is capable of being a game-changer when he's healthy. Speaking of game-changers, Pate is excited about a player that OU is getting back from injury this season as well.
"You remember this time last year, we were talking about Deion Burks out of Purdue," Pate said. "He got hurt last year and so he wasn't the impact player we thought he'd be. But he still has that potential. And so he's there, they added a starting OT like we talked about, added two other defensive starters."
Burks' decision to come back for one more year of football, and to do it in Norman, was a big boost for Venables and his staff. If he's healthy, he can be the No. 1 target that Mateer and Arbuckle will need him to be.
Pate also recognized the job Venables has done in high school recruiting and in the transfer portal since taking over in December of 2021, which means that the talent is there in a lot of places on the roster for Oklahoma.

"This is a program that has stacked top 10 recruiting classes and portal classes on top of each other," Pate said. "They've got an incredibly difficult schedule this year. But they could also be a College Football Playoff team this year."
Are there holes on the depth chart for the 2025 Oklahoma Sooners? Sure, there are. But last December, Venables and the coaching staff headed into an offseason when changes absolutely had to happen after a dismal showing in 2024. While the roster isn't perfect, so many of the problem areas have been addressed and improved in the last five months. But only time will tell whether Venables' moves will pay off this fall.

Texas Tech pitcher NiJaree Canady faces toughest challenge yet after WCWS Game 1 heartbreak

NiJaree Canady has achieved almost everything since transferring to Texas Tech from Stanford and signing an NIL deal worth just over $1 million. She led the Red Raiders to three firsts — the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles and a berth in the Women's College World Series. She was the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Pitcher of the Year for the second straight year and leads the nation in wins (33) and ERA (0.94). The only thing missing is a national championship and that goal will be the toughest to reach after she gave up a late lead in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series to Texas on Wednesday. After the 2-1 loss, the Red Raiders must beat the Longhorns in two straight to win the national title. Canady, who threw 88 pitches in Game 1, is battling a soft tissue injury on her left leg suffered in the preseason that has severely limited her practice time. She still expects to be ready for Game 2 on Thursday. "I have all summer to rest. I'm ready to play softball." Canady lost the lead when she threw what was supposed to be ball four and an intentional walk close enough for Texas' Reese Atwood to make contact. Atwood knocked in what turned out to be the game-winning runs in the sixth inning, putting the Longhorns one win from their first national title. Atwood knew she was fortunate to get that pitch from Canady. "Props to NiJa, because she definitely kept us real tight throughout that game," she said. "She's a great pitcher. I saw my opportunity and I took it." Canady has thrown every pitch for the Red Raiders during the World Series, but Tech coach Gerry Glasco did not guarantee his ace would start on Thursday, saying he needs to watch out for her long-term health. Glasco said Canady is such a competitor that she might not be fully honest about her condition. "If you know NiJa, she's not going to complain, she's not going to tell you," he said. "We'll have to really dig, and hopefully the trainer can get her to communicate enough that he'll get a good assessment. I want to win, but also I want to be sure we leave this season healthy for the future." That being said, Glasco expects Canady to be ready. Her competitive drive is one of the reasons recruiting her was a priority when he became Tech's coach before this season. Canady has been on the hot seat before. She led Stanford to the national semifinals the previous two seasons and was the winning pitcher on Monday when Tech knocked out four-time defending national champion Oklahoma. "As far as NiJa tomorrow, if you've got to pick a pitcher in America to come back and win two games in a row with — I'll take NiJa," he said. "If anybody can do what we need to do to come back, I'm thrilled to have NiJa do it."

Oklahoma Sooners dynasty far from over

Oklahoma Sooners dynasty far from over The Oklahoma Sooners championship streak came to an end with their 3-2 loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. A lot of folks in the softball world were waiting for the day that Oklahoma didn't hoist the national championship. They were so excited about the Sooners' downfall in 2025 that they may have been a bit hasty with some of their language. "The dynasty is over," they said. But what they don't realize is that the dynasty started long before 2021, long before the first of four straight national titles. Let's consider what the Sooners have done for a second. Made the super regionals every year since 2010. Made the Women's College World Series 13 of the last 14 times. Seven national championships since 2013. Runner-ups in 2012 and 2019. Only once failed to reach the semifinals of the WCWS since 2013 And here's what they've done over the last 10 years. 2016 - National Champion 2017 - National Champion 2018 - Semifinalist 2019 - Runner-up 2020 - COVID Year, No WCWS 2021 - National Champion 2022 - National Champion 2023 - National Champion 2024 - National Champion 2025 - National Semifinalist The Sooners have been on an incredible run for a decade and a half, redefining what success looks like in the sport of college softball. They're nowhere close to being finished. Patty Gasso and Oklahoma came into the 2025 season with a young team. They had 13 underclassmen on the roster. The first four hitters in the order were freshmen and sophomores. There were only three seniors on the roster; Sam Landry, Isabella Smith, and Cydney Sanders. The Sooners are losing a lot in Landry, Smith, and Sanders. But Gasso and her staff still have a big portion of their corps remaining for the 2026 season. Just look at this projected lineup. Kasidi Pickering, LF Ella Parker, UT Gabbie Garcia, SS Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, 3B Sydney Barker, 1B Ailana Agbayani, 2B Hannah Coor, CF Isabela Emerling, C Abigale Dayton, RF Barker, a true freshman in 2025, went 3-for-3 off of NiJaree Canady in Oklahoma's loss to the Red Raiders. That's the only change to a lineup that won the SEC regular season title, was co-SEC tournament champions, and made it to the semifinals of the Women's College World Series. A lineup that was third in the nation in home runs per game, second in on-base percentage, third in slugging percentage, and 22nd in batting average. The Oklahoma Sooners will likely be active in the transfer portal to add some pitching help. However, the staff remains solid as it stands right now. Kierston Deal and Peytn Monticelli return a lot of experience. Audrey Lowry was fantastic down the stretch, even if she didn't get an opportunity to pitch in the Women's College World Series. Sophia Bordi will be back, and the Sooners are adding the top pitcher in the 2025 recruiting class, Alyssa Parker from Ocola, Oklahoma. Gasso and pitching coach Jennifer Rocha have added a frontline starter in the portal each of the last two offseasons with Kelly Maxwell and Sam Landry. You can bet they'll be aggressive to make sure they have a pitcher who can lead the way for the Sooners. The Sooners are bringing the nation's No. 1 recruiting class to Norman in the fall. In the 2026 cycle, the Sooners currently have the No. 2 class in the nation. It's a team that will come back hungry for the 2026 season, knowing they were just a couple of hits away from extending their season on Monday night. And Gasso believes that they'll be better off going through this experience. After the game, she talked about how much fun she had with this team, watching them develop. "Watching them grow," Gasso said. "Watching them be hungry. Watching them never quit. The amount of rebounded, extra-inning, or last-inning heroics and come-from-behind wins has been something incredible. As much as I need a break, I'm really ready to have them come back and start over again because I think we learned so much and we're going to be that much better." The Oklahoma Sooners have areas they can improve. However, if their last decade and a half is any indication, the Sooners will be one of the best teams in college softball in 2026 and one of the eight teams to contend for the national title. Opponents want the dynasty to be over. But it's far from over. Contact/Follow us @SoonersWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes, and opinions. Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes erupts with 3-word reaction to Texas Tech's win vs. Oklahoma

The post Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes erupts with 3-word reaction to Texas Tech's win vs. Oklahoma appeared first on ClutchPoints. Super Bowl LIX might not have ended the way that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs wanted. Although the team wanted to capture its third straight Lombardi Trophy, the Philadelphia Eagles thwarted that attempt in February. Now, the focus is undoubtedly on getting to Super Bowl number four. However, Mahomes is still an avid fan of his alma mater, Texas Tech. On Monday night, he had reason to celebrate his alma mater's softball team's win over Oklahoma. Advertisement 'AHHHHHHHHHHHHH LETS GOOOO!!!!!!!! @TexasTechSB,' posted Mahomes on the social media platform Monday. Even as he has risen to the top of the NFL mountaintop, Mahomes' love for the Red Raiders still burns strong. He attends sporting events whenever he's able, including earlier this year when the Texas Tech's men's basketball team played in the NCAA Tournament. Even off the field, it's clear that Mahomes' competitive fire still burns strong. Will that fire continue as he and the Chiefs prep for the 2025 season? Can Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs make fourth straight Super Bowl? Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images 2025 might be the end of an era for Kansas City. Legendary tight end Travis Kelce might be playing his final season. The need for more weapons around Mahomes is apparent. The Chiefs brass, led by GM Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid, also need to protect their quarterback. Hence the additions on the offensive line with offensive tackles Josh Simmons (2025 first-round selection) and Jaylon Moore. They also added rookie wide receiver Jalen Royal and running back Brashard Smith in the draft. Not to mention, veteran running back Kareem Hunt is back for another run, along with new backup quarterbacks Gardner Minshew and Bailey Zappe. Veach and Reid have added more pieces, and it's up for the other players in the offensive core, particularly Kelce and wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, to rise up once again in 2025. If Mahomes and the offense can return to its former level of lethality, then a fourth straight Super Bowl appearance could be in the cards come next February.
