‘Extremely poor seats, substandard cleanliness': Ex-Akal Takht Jathedar alleges ill-treatment by Air India staff
The former Jathedar of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, has alleged ill-treatment by Air India staff and hit out at the airline for what he described as 'extremely poor' business class conditions on an international flight to the United States. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann responded to the development on Friday, urging the Centre to 'take exemplary action against those responsible'.
In a social media post on Thursday, Giani Raghbir Singh said he was scheduled to travel from New Delhi to San Francisco on Air India flight AI183, along with two others, to participate in a Gurmat Samagam event in Sacramento, California. He alleged that although they boarded the flight with business class tickets, the condition of the seats was 'extremely poor' and 'the cleanliness was substandard'. 'Upon lodging complaints on the spot, the Air India staff members misbehaved,' he further alleged, adding that 'the captain of the flight spoke decently'.
Air India is yet to issue a response to the allegations.
Following the incident, the former Jathedar said he and some other dissatisfied passengers disembarked in protest and sat near the immigration checkpoint inside the terminal. 'We have been harassed at the airport for the past three hours. The immigration officers took our passports, but have not contacted us since. We have not received our luggage either, and no Air India official has reached out to us,' he said.
He further alleged that the group was left without food or water during the ordeal. 'We have been sitting hungry and thirsty in front of the immigration counter for the past three hours — this treatment is utterly disgraceful,' he stated.
Giani Raghbir Singh called for immediate action, demanding that Air India address the issue and improve the standard of service provided.
In a post on social media on Friday, CM Mann said, 'We have received information about a condemnable incident involving former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest religious seat of the Sikh community, and respected Head Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh Ji, who was allegedly mistreated by Air India and its staff.'
Calling Giani Raghbir Singh 'a highly respected figure of our community', Mann said, '…we strongly denounce such behaviour towards him. We demand that the central government investigate the matter thoroughly and take exemplary action against those responsible, so that such incidents do not occur in the future.'
Earlier this year, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had expressed anguish over the discomfort he experienced during an Air India flight from Bhopal to New Delhi after travelling on a 'broken' seat. The minister had questioned the Air India management over the incident, asking if it would 'take steps to ensure that no passenger faces such inconvenience in future'.

BJP leader Jagmohan Singh Raju writes to PM Narendra Modi for release of Sikh prisoners
On the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state general secretary and former IAS officer Jagmohan Singh Raju wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to release Sikh prisoners on humanitarian grounds. Sharing the letter on his Facebook page, Raju said, 'Release Sikh prisoners on humanitarian grounds – put final lid on the Dark Era of 1980s in Punjab (sic).' In the letter penned in Hindi, he wrote: 'Today, June 6, is the day of pain and anger for the Sikh Panth. On this day in 1984, as you uttered in the Parliament, an attack was launched on the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, Akal Takht. You are the first Prime Minister who officially recognised this as an attack on the Akal Takht. Even Sikh PM Manmohan Singh did not have courage to accept this reality.' 'The attack on Akal Takht wounded the Sikh psyche and pride permanently. Due to lack of mature leadership needed to pacify hurt sentiments of Panth, Sikh youths opted for insurgency against this oppression. In revenge, Indira Gandhi, the then PM, was assassinated, followed by Sikh massacre in Delhi…This bloody era eliminated a generation of Sikh youths,' read the letter. 'Modi ji, I humbly request you to reconsider the release of Sikh prisoners on grounds of justice and compassion. They committed the crime because they were enraged over the attack on Golden Temple. They have served the adequate punishment for their offences. Time has come now to show compassion for them,' he wrote Raju unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly elections on a BJP ticket from Amritsar East.

Harsimrat urges EAM to sensitise UAE govt on Sikhs' five articles of faith
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to initiate a dialogue with the UAE government to sensitise it about the religious significance of the five articles of faith, especially the 'kirpan', for the initiated Sikhs. In a letter to the minister, the Bathinda MP said she was making this appeal in the wake of a recent "advisory" by the Indian Embassy in UAE directing Indians not to carry sharp objects while visiting the country in view of Article 405 of the UAE penal law which prohibits the same. This move has caused deep distress and mental agony to Sikh travellers and residents alike, Harsimrat said, noting that there have been instances of Sikhs being detained and compelled to remove their 'kirpan'. She also cited a recent case of an elderly man being detained in Abu Dhabi for wearing the 'kirpan' and turban. Badal asserted in her letter that such incidents had caused distress within the Sikh community as they contravened the rights of Sikhs to practice their faith besides raising serious concerns about the protection of religious freedom for minorities in the UAE. "The Sikh community has always contributed positively to societies worldwide, including in the UAE, and demand the freedom to practice its faith in accordance with its tenets. "Denying Sikhs the right to wear their five 'kakkars' (Sikh articles of faith worn by baptised Sikhs), particularly the 'kirpan', is a curtailment of religious freedom and contrary to the principles of mutual respect and pluralism that India stands for," she said. The former union minister also requested Jaishankar to consider sending a high-level delegation, including representatives from the National Commission for Minorities and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), to engage with UAE authorities and relevant international agencies and sensitise them about Sikh articles of faith. She asserted that the 'kirpan' was a sacred symbol and an inseparable part of Sikh identity mandated by Sikh tenets since the time of Guru Gobind Singh. "Its significance is spiritual and symbolic, representing the duty to uphold justice and protect the oppressed, and not as a weapon for aggression or harm. The 'kirpan' is worn at all times by 'Amritdhari' Sikhs (initiated Sikhs) as a matter of religious obligation and conscience", she added.

US lawmaker under fire for protesting Sikh prayer in Congress
The TOI correspondent from Washington: A racist Republican lawmaker known for making inflammatory statements is under fire after misidentifying a Sikh religious leader as Muslim and declaring he should never have been allowed to deliver the morning prayer in Congress in a country she falsely claimed was "founded as a Christian nation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " 'It's deeply troubling that a Muslim was allowed to lead prayer in the House of Representatives this morning. This should never have been allowed to happen. America was founded as a Christian nation, and I believe our government should reflect that truth, not drift further…' Illinois lawmaker Mary Miller said in a now-deleted post, after she had corrected the religious identity. The remark embarrassed the Republican Party beyond its racist MAGA base, particularly since it was a GOP Congressman who had invited New Jersey granthi Giani Singh to deliver the prayer. "I was proud to invite a Sikh chaplain to open the House with prayer this morning. The Sikh community is peaceful, generous, and deeply rooted in family and service, values we should all appreciate, no matter our religion," New Jersey Congressman Jeff van Drew said, adding, "as a Catholic, I take my faith seriously and I also believe part of being American is respecting other people's faiths too." Miller was also castigated by the Democratic Party, which is more representative of America's changing demographics. 'It's deeply troubling that such an ignorant and hateful extremist is serving in the United States Congress,' House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on X. 'That would be you, Mary.' Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and public intellectuals also called out Miller for falsely claiming the US was founded as a Christian nation, a more recent fiction promoted by racist MAGA hardliners. The US was not founded as an explicitly Christian nation, and the First Amendment to the Constitution protects freedom of religion. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In fact, the first Sikhs came to America around 1900, long before the forebears of many MAGA extremists. Early Sikhs settled down on the Pacific coast, and many of their descendants are now prosperous and politically influential farmers and business owners in California, a fact recognised by local lawmakers. 'I'm troubled by my colleague's remarks about this morning's Sikh prayer, which have since been deleted,' California Congressman David Valadao, a Republican, wrote on X. 'Throughout the country—and in the Central Valley— Sikh-Americans are valued and respected members of our communities, yet they continue to face harassment and discrimination. There are more than 500,000 Sikhs in the US, according to Sikh Advocacy groups, although the 2020 US census reported only 70,697 respondents identifying as Sikh. Many of them are in California's Central Valley, where some towns have had Sikh mayors and Punjabi is commonly spoken. The GOP also has at least two prominent Sikhs in leadership positions: Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and former Trump campaign legal advisor and US assistant attorney general for the civil rights division Harmeet Dhillon. Dhillon in fact delivered the closing invocation (antim ardas) at the Republican National Convention last year, triggering a backlash from MAGA fundamentalists, one of whom posted this on X: "ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE!! I have nothing but respect for Harmeet Dhillon but fire whoever invited her to pray to a foreign god, there is only one true God we pray to and his name is not whatever she said. His name is YAHWEH and his only begotten Son is Jesus Christ. "
