‘Completely unacceptable': Mary Lou Retton apologizes after DUI charge
American gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton on Tuesday entered a no contest plea to driving under the influence stemming from a May traffic stop in her hometown of Fairmont.
A Marion County judge fined her USD$100, consistent with sentencing guidelines for first-time, non-aggravated offences, her lawyer Edmund J. Rollo said in a statement.

In a statement released through her lawyer, the 57-year-old Retton said she took full responsibility for her actions.

'What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses,' she said. 'To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry. I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.'
Fairmont police stopped Retton on May 17 following a report about a person in a Porsche driving erratically. According to the criminal complaint, Retton smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words, and she failed a field sobriety test. Officers also reported observing a container of wine in the passenger seat.
Retton was 16 when she became the first American female gymnast to win the all-around at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She also won two silver and two bronze medals to help bring gymnastics into the mainstream in the United States.

In 2023, Retton's family disclosed she was recuperating from a rare form of pneumonia that landed her in intensive care. Doctors found her oxygen levels dangerously low. Her medical team considered putting her on a ventilator as her condition worsened. Retton went on oxygen treatment and, after weeks in the hospital, improved enough to be sent home.

B.C. government plans to transition supportive housing out of Granville Street, mayor says
The provincial government has announced plans to transition supportive housing out of the Granville Street entertainment district, according to Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. This announcement comes after a fire broke out in a single-room occupancy building on the strip on Wednesday, leaving two people needing treatment for smoke inhalation. The fire broke out in the former Howard Johnson hotel that now serves as a single-room accommodation housing facility. The B.C. government bought the building at 1176 Granville in 2020, and controversially converted it to housing as it sought to shelter the city's homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic quickly. It has since generated thousands of emergency calls, with residents setting fires, pulling fire alarms and setting off the building's sprinkler systems. 'We want to support the entire community, the business community, with our resources,' Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai said at a press conference on Thursday. B.C.'s Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon told Global News that the next move is in the City of Vancouver's hands. 'They've committed to us that they will find three net-new locations for supportive housing and once they're able to do that, we'll get going on that,' he said. 'In the end, our priority is two things. One, we want to see a healthy and safe community but we also want to make sure that people have housing and they have the supports they need. In this plan, we believe we can do both.'

Create Account 'Yeah, I completely forgot that that was the long par-3 and I honestly asked Joe, my caddie, and everyone in the group, I was like, 'Do you go for this par-4 or do you lay up?'' After figuring out he was serious and the laughter subsided, Morikawa figured out his plan for the week. 'Probably hit driver or 3-wood and hopefully hit the green. If not, make up-and-down,' he said. 'Honestly, there's not a ton of strategy other than like hitting your driver within 15 yards or your 3-wood within 15 yards. 'Just hit and hope, honestly.' Morikawa said that with all the videos on social media, it's not hard to get psyched out about a course such as Oakmont before even hitting a shot, but at this point in his career, the two-time major winner feels he has the experience necessary so that won't happen. 'I've played enough majors now where I know what my game plan and how I have to attack this golf course,' he said. 'Yes, there's going to be some holes that I will take par. There's a handful of holes this week already I would take par four days in a row. But there's other holes where you've got to take advantage.'
