BBC News27-05-2025

Seven new routes have been added to the night bus service across the South West. The Saturday night/Sunday morning service, set up by the police and supported by local councils, was first trialled during Christmas 2023.The night bus service, provided by Stagecoach in Devon and First Bus in Newquay, would operate on Saturdays "in a bid to reduce drink and drug-related incidents", Devon and Cornwall Police said.New routes in Plymouth and Exeter between 31 May and 31 December will be introduced alongside a longer Newquay service running until 6 September.
'Fantastic boost'
Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said its use could become a "a mainstay of having a night out".She said: "The extension of the night bus service to include seven new routes will be a fantastic boost to our evening and night-time economy, encouraging residents and visitors alike to relax and enjoy socialising in Exeter, Plymouth, Newquay, Torbay and north Devon without worrying about the expense of a taxi, or having a designated driver."Night buses in Devon and Cornwall have been proven to be a great success, reducing crime and anti-social behaviour and making people feel safer."
Insp Nathan Johnson, from the Exeter Neighbourhood Team, said: "Exeter is a safe city, although like other towns and cities, it has its challenges. "By acknowledging these issues and working in partnership, we can identify the best solutions for our community."The data from previous night buses in other areas in the force suggest we will see a drop in drink-driving and anti-social behaviour and I welcome its introduction into Exeter."Steve Johnson, Newquay sector inspector, said when the night bus service was provided in summer 2024 they saw a drop in crime and anti-social behaviour.

Shoppers gobsmacked after bizarre Land Rover smash leaves one motor mounted on top of another

YOU can't park there madam! Supermarket shoppers are gobsmacked after a car park prang left one motor mounted on top of another. The smash is said to have happened when a woman in a Land Rover reversed into another car, flipping it over and hitting a silver VW Beetle. 4 4 Others pointed out it looked like a modern sculpture. Former Army aircraft technician David Bowden posted pictures on social media, adding: 'It's all happening in Falmouth Sainsbury's. 'It is amazing, like a bit of modern art, or a collapsed game of Jenga.' Mark Carveth joked: 'The winner of the 2025 Turner prize is a sculpture from Falmouth.' Dawn Chittock said: 'Would make a great Specsavers advert.' The incident happened at a Sainsbury's supermarket in Falmouth, Cornwall, on Saturday. A tannoy went out in the store asking for the driver of the blue car to attend the car park - where they were in for a shock. The vehicles were all recovered and no one was hurt. Two people were in one of the vehicles at the time of the crash, but both got out of the vehicle uninjured. Cops said the drivers swapped insurance details at the scene. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We were called to Sainsbury's, Falmouth, car park at around 1.30pm on Saturday 31 May following a report of a three vehicle collision. "Only one vehicle had occupants but both got out of the car uninjured. All vehicles were recovered and insurance details swapped." A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended an incident in the car park of our Falmouth store on Saturday afternoon. A small section of the car park was closed for a couple of hours and we're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused." 4 4

Former girlfriend of man killed in acid attack on his doorstep is among six in court charged with his murder

The ex-girlfriend of an acid attack victim has appeared in court charged with his murder. Paris Wilson, 34, a former probation officer, is accused of murdering Danny Cahalane, 38, at the home they once shared in Plymouth, Devon. Fitness instructor Mr Cahalane, 38, had acid thrown in his face after answering the door to his home in Lipson Road, at 3.55am on Friday 21 February. He died in hospital ten weeks later, on Saturday 3 May. A total of nine defendants - including Wilson and mother-of-three Jenna Said - have already appeared in court charged with other offences relating to the attack on Mr Cahalane. But following his death prosecutors this week further charged six of the defendants with murder. Today Wilson, of The Quay, Plymouth, appeared at the city's magistrates court along with five male co-defendants charged with Mr Cahalane's murder. The six defendants appeared in three brief hearings via video link. Appearing on a screen from prison, Wilson – wearing a black sleeveless top - spoke to confirm her name and home address but added: 'Although I'm currently at HMP Eastwood Park'. Chair of the Bench Nicholas Mansfield told Wilson: 'You are going to be remanded in custody until tomorrow when you will be produced at Plymouth Crown Court. That's all for today.' In a level voice, Wilson replied: 'Thank you'. Fellow defendants Israel Augustus, 25, of Pulford Road in London, Abdul-Rasheed Adedoja, 22, of North Circular Road, Neasden, London, Ramarnee Bakas-Sithole, 22, of Junction Road, London, Brian Kalemba, 22, of Eastbury Square, Barking, London and Isanah Sungum, 21 of Sterling Way, Edmonton, London, all also appeared charged with murder. They only spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses. None of the defendants were asked to enter a plea and were remanded into custody. Magistrates said the severity of the case meant the case must be sent to Plymouth Crown Court where the defendants will appear tomorrow. A provisional trial date for May 2026 has been fixed before a High Court judge at Winchester Crown Court. Mother-of-two Wilson was previously charged with conspiracy to murder and kidnap Mr Cahalane, as well as participating in the activity of an organised crime group. Said, also known as Jenna O'Grady, 38, is also charged with conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to kidnap and participating in the activity of an organised crime group. Plymouth Magistrates' Court previously heard Mr Cahalane suffered horrific facial injuries after sulphuric acid was thrown at him. In a statement issued through police following his death, Mr Cahalane's family said: 'We are struggling to come to terms with Danny's passing. Danny was an outstanding father and son. 'Danny and his mum had so much love for each other. He is well loved by his family and friends and as a family we cherish his love and memories. 'We ask the family are please given privacy and respect during this time.' Following the incident, officers remained at the scene for a number of days, with crime scene investigators in white forensic suits seen entering and leaving Mr Cahalane's home. Locals were asked to check CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage. Wilson's LinkedIn page suggests she has previously worked in business development and holds a masters degree in public administration.

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Huge ‘Williams blow', Barcelona in Partey talks EXCLUSIVE, ‘green light' for Gyokeres deal

Former Gunner frontrunner for League One job Jack Wilshire is a frontrunner to land the Plymouth job. The former England midfielder, who was caretaker boss at Norwich for the final two games of the season, is set to have talks with the club this summer. The Pilgrims are looking for a new boss after Miron Muslic left to join Schalke. Former Huddersfield manager David Wagner and ex-Bolton manager Ian Evatt are also in the frame. Wilshere, 32, is likely to take the job if it is offered by Plymouth, who suffered relegation to League One despite an upturn in results under Muslic. But the club could not recover after a poor run under Wilshere's former England team-mate Wayne Rooney who endured a torrid seven months in the south-west before being axed on December 31. Ex-midfielder Wilshere was Under-18s boss at Arsenal before being appointed as Norwich's first team coach in October. He took over as interim manager at Carrow Road after the sacking of Johannes Hoff Thorup. told he would not get it.
