Microsoft looks to boost AI performance in European languages

Paris: US tech behemoth
Microsoft
is investing millions of dollars to funnel more European-language data into AI development, company president Brad Smith told AFP Monday.
With today's leading AI models mostly trained on material in English, "the survival of these languages and the health of these cultures is quite literally at stake" without a course correction, Smith said in an interview.
AI models are "less capable when it is in a language that has insufficient data," he added -- which could push more users to switch to English even when it is not their native language.
Microsoft will from September set up research units in the eastern French city Strasbourg to "help expand the availability of
multilingual data
for AI development" in at least 10 of the European Union's 24 languages, including Estonian and Greek.
The work will include digitising books and recording hundreds of hours of audio.
"This isn't about creating data for Microsoft to own. It is about creating data for the public to be able to use," Smith said, adding that the information would be shared on an open-source basis.
The US-based company has in recent months striven to position itself as especially compatible with a gathering political push for European technological sovereignty.
Leaders in the bloc have grown increasingly nervous at their dependency on US tech firms and infrastructure since Donald Trump's reelection to the White House.
In June, Microsoft said it was stepping up cooperation with European governments on cybersecurity and announced new "
data sovereignty
" measures for its data centers on the continent.
Smith said that Monday's announcement was just the latest evidence of the company's commitment to Europe.
Most leading AI firms are American or Chinese, although Europe has some standouts like France's Mistral or Franco-American platform Hugging Face.
Away from Microsoft, some European initiatives such as TildeLM are pushing to develop local-language AI models.
The Windows and Office developer also said Monday that it was working on a digital recreation of Paris' Notre-Dame cathedral that it plans to gift to the French state, as well as digitising items from the country's BNF national library and Decorative Arts Museum.

Bad news for Mukesh Ambani as loses Rs 660000000000 due to…, not US, but EU finds way to kill Russian oil

The European Union has imposed a ban on the import of Russian oil from third countries which means no EU nation can now import Russian-origin crude or refined products irrespective of where it is processed or shipped from. This move can impact India, which was exporting around $15 billion of refined petroleum products annually to European markets. With this new restriction, that entire revenue stream is now at risk. EU's Move Hits India Hard In recent weeks, former U.S. President Donald Trump had made statements of curbing trade in Russian oil, but they had little impact on countries like India and China. However, the EU's latest decision has given a serious blow to Mukesh Ambani. On Monday, after the EU's announcement, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) shares declined over 3%, wiping out more than Rs 66,000 crore in market capitalisation. The new EU rule bans the import of Russian oil, even if it is refined in a third country like India. This directly affects companies like Reliance Industries, one of India's largest exporters of refined crude oil products to Europe. India's Oil Trade With Russia and Europe According to reports, India exported $19.2 billion worth of petroleum products to the EU in FY24. However, in FY25, this number dropped by 27.1% to $15 billion, after growing scrutiny over the origin of crude used. At the same time, India imported $50.3 billion of crude oil from Russia in FY25, so Russian oil now accounts for over 44% of India's total crude basket. Big Blow To Reliance Industries The impact can be seen on Reliance Industries, which has become the largest importer of Russian crude oil. In December 2024, RIL signed a 10-year deal with Russia's Rosneft to import around 500,000 barrels per day of Russian crude at around $13 billion annually. This move helped RIL to refine the cheaper Russian crude and export the high-margin products, especially diesel, to Europe. As of October 2024, Reliance was importing an average of 405,000 barrels per day from Russia which was over one-third of its total crude oil intake. With Russian crude priced $3–4 per barrel cheaper than Middle Eastern grades, RIL had been benefiting from healthy refining margins and strong demand in European markets. But the EU's ban has now threatens this business model. Reliance Industries Lost 66,000 Crore After the EU's decision, Reliance shares fell sharply. On the BSE, RIL stock closed at Rs 1,428.20, down 3.29% from the previous close. During the session, it hit a day's low of Rs 1,423.05. The stock had opened at Rs 1,474.95, slightly below its previous close of Rs 1,476.85. The decline resulted in a massive hit to Reliance's market capitalisation. On Friday, the company's market cap was at Rs 19,98,543.22 crore. By the end of Monday's trading session, it had fallen to Rs 19,32,707.74 crore which was a drop of Rs 65,835.48 crore in a single day.

Pernod Ricard sells Imperial Blue whisky to India's Tilaknagar Industries

Pernod Ricard said on Wednesday it had agreed to sell its Imperial Blue whisky business to Indian liquor maker Tilaknagar Industries , as the French spirits group boosts its focus on premium labels in its portfolio. The world's No. 2 Western spirits maker did not disclose the value of the deal, but said that on completion it was expected to be "immediately and meaningfully accretive" to Pernod Ricard India's operating margin and net sales growth rate. The news comes as the French group looks to streamline its business and focus on its core portfolio of pricey, global brands amid a sector-wide downturn in sales. Pernod Ricard Chairman and CEO Alexandre Ricard said the sale would "sharpen our focus on more profitable and faster growing brands in India, as in the rest of the world". Live Events Jean Touboul, CEO of Pernod Ricard India, said it would notably allow Pernod Ricard to allocate resources more effectively towards high-growth brands in India such as Royal Stag, Blenders Pride, as well as international brands like Chivas, Jameson, Absolut, and Ballantine's. Pernod Ricard sees India, the group second-largest market, as key to future growth. Alcohol sales in India are projected to hit $61.35 billion in fiscal 2025-26, according to CRISIL. Imperial Blue, a top-selling mass-market whisky, competes in India with the likes of United Spirits' McDowell's No.1. Pernod Ricard views it as a local, value brand, and therefore not as central to its strategy as pricier, global labels like Chivas Regal. For Tilaknagar Industries , a dominant player in India's brandy market with Mansion House, the deal marks a strategic shift into whisky, a faster-growing, higher-margin segment. Tilaknagar Industries has been in turnaround mode, returning to profit after debt restructuring and widening distribution.

We are here to stay, says Renault India MD

French carmaker Renault India on Wednesday introduced the All-New Renault Triber, a 7-seater car priced starting ₹6,29,995 (ex-Showroom). The top most model is priced at ₹9.16 lakh. This new generation family car has debuted with a completely redesigned front fascia and is equipped with 35 new features. This is the first ever product under the company's renault. rethink. brand transformation strategy. Three more new products would be introduced in two years to broad base product offering. Venkatram Mamillapalle, Managing Director, Renault India, said, 'India remains a cornerstone of Renault's global strategy, driven by a strong product pipeline, expanding export operations, and a renewed focus on customer satisfaction.' 'The all-New Triber is also the first in India to feature Renault's new brand logo, symbolising the company's bold, modern direction and deep alignment with Indian aspirations,' he said. 'As a fully integrated operation with a manufacturing plant, R&D centre, and design studio based in India, Renault continues to develop and produce vehicles tailored specifically for Indian customers — truly by India, for India,' he said adding that the new Triber is over 90% localised, underscoring the company's long-term commitment to the Indian market. The made in India Triber already has 1.84 lakh customers in the country and is exported to over a dozen countries around the world. He said the introduction of the All-New Triber marked an important milestone in Renault's product renewal strategy, aimed at claiming its due position in the competitive Indian automobile market In an interview with The Hindu, Mr. Mamillapalle said after deciding to take over 100% of the manufacturing plant in Chennai, the company now had design studio, engineering centre, manufacturing plant and commercial organisation together as Renault group in India. 'We are in the process of combining everything. It will take some more time but whenever we finish, at that time it will be one single organisation which will be in India, the large organisation which will be very similar to any of the Indian OEMs,' he said. Recently the company launched the R stores which is the new showroom to provide new experience to customers. 'We have three more products to come within next two years. We will continue to work in India on a long-term basis. The most important thing for us is the capacity utilization of the plant. And with the partner Nissan, we are sure that we will be reaching to that level once the total industry volume goes up from current 4.3 to 6 million in future or 8 million in 2032,' he said. On the rare earth issue worrying the automobile industry he said, 'As far as Renault India is concerned, absolutely no problem. We are not worried about rare earth at this part of time because we are secured. Globally, we are so wide and deep that our purchasing team has a lot of efficiency. I don't think we see a problem. Until the rare earth producer changes some policy, we don't see a threat.' The Renault Group which has fixed problems in many of its global markets has now focused its attention on India where it currently holds about 1% of the market share. 'Now the focus is in India. The ₹5,400 crore of investment which we announced is part of the plan. The design studio in India, is second largest after France. We acquired the 100% of the plant [in Chennai], which shows that we have a plan. We have confidence in this market,' he added. 'We are here to stay. We are giving confidence. We have invested massively over a period of time, both money as well as time and resources. Now we are establishing ourselves as one single organization with tech center, design studio, manufacturing and commercial together,' he emphasised. 'And all these three put together will give us the right products at right time and at a right cost, which will definitely give us success. And we will work in this direction,' he stated.
