BCCI reacts after deaths, injuries reported due to stampede in Bengaluru: ‘Totally shocking. There've been some lapses'
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru's celebration of a maiden IPL title haul, which marked the end of their 18-year-long wait, at home turned into chaos on Wednesday after four people lost their lives and several were left injured during a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy stadium. Calling it a "shocking" incident, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia outlined the lapses in "proper security measures," before extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
'This incident of deaths due to stampede is totally shocking for us. We at BCCI extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We also pray for the speedy recovery of all those who have been injured. When one organizes a victory celebrations of this magnitude, proper precautions, safety and security measures need to be taken. There has been some lapses in some corner somewhere. Due diligence should have been done so that an incident like this could have been avoided. I have heard that celebrations are on and I sincerely hope that nothing untoward happens. Even yesterday in Ahmedabad, during IPL finals, there were 120,000 people at the Narendra Modi Stadium. But BCCI has a dedicated team which has done elaborate planning in coordination with local district administration and law enforcing authorities to ensure that safety and security of the spectators. When we organized the Victory parade in Mumbai after the T20 World Cup, we had spoken to the local authorities and made elaborate arrangements keeping in mind the safety and security of the crowd who had come to see their heroes,' said BCCI secretary to PTI.

Mysuru: BJP activists protested near Ramaswamy Circle on Friday, condemning the state govt's stance on suspending the Bengaluru police commissioner. Led by Krishnaraja MLA TS Srivatsa, the activists accused the Congress govt of being responsible for the death of 11 RCB fans in the stampede, a day after RCB won its first IPL title. Bengaluru stampede: BJP demands CM, ministers' resignation
Madikeri: The BJP functionaries in Kodagu have demanded the resignation of the chief minister, DCM, and home minister over the Bengaluru stampede issue. They alleged that govt is directly responsible for the death of 11 victims in Bengaluru. "The state has the right to congratulate and celebrate the win of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). However, prior arrangements and preparations needed to be in place before victory celebration. The programme was organised in a hurry, and govt is responsible for the tragic disaster," alleged Ravi Kalappa, district BJP president. He demanded that the chief minister, deputy chief minister, and home minister resign from their posts immediately. Former MLC Sunil Subramani said, "The entire state is ashamed of the incident that unfolded in Bengaluru and claimed the lives of 11 citizens. Bengaluru is the place where the CM, DCM, and home minister are. It is a tragedy that such a disastrous incident has taken place in the same place. A hasty decision taken due to the tussle between the CM and DCM to get the credit for the programme is the reason for the tragedy." He demanded that the CM, DCM, and home minister resign, taking moral responsibility. Accusing CM Siddaramaiah of being weak, Sunil said that the Congress high command should elect a capable person for the post of CM. "DCM Shiva Kumar said that he made a mistake. However, lives were lost due to that mistake," he added. BJP general secretary Mahesh Jaini accused the state of ignoring police reports and demanded that the ministers take moral responsibility and resign from their posts. UP Congress workers, close to state chief Ajay Rai, arrested for 'harassing' woman over shop; party cries fowl
Two local Congress workers, said to be close to party's Uttar Pradesh unit chief Ajay Rai, were arrested on charges of molestation, robbery, and theft, police said on Friday. The arrest came after a woman lodged a complaint against the two and alleged she was harassed and forcibly evicted from her shop in Varanasi's Chetganj area. Local Station House Officer (SHO) Dilip Kumar Mishra said that the complainant, Chetganj resident Sachina Khatoon, had rented a shop in Hathua Market from Sanjay Singh and ran a boutique there, news agency PTI reported. Khatoon alleged that following Singh's death during the Covid-19 pandemic, two of his friends, Anand Pandey and Amit Pathak, began intimidating her and extorting money in the name of protection fees. "When she refused, they allegedly pressured her to vacate the shop and subjected her to various forms of harassment," SHO Mishra added. Khatoon reportedly claimed that she even got a stay order on the eviction from the court. Despite this order, in May last year, Pandey and Pathak planned a break-in into her shop and made off with all her belongings, she added. When she and her daughters resisted this, the two men berated and harassed them, police said as per her complaint. "Both Anand Pandey and Amit Pathak are said to be close associates of Congress state president Ajay Rai. A case of robbery, theft, and molestation has been registered against them. Both were arrested on Thursday and presented before the court, which subsequently sent them to jail," said the SHO. Meanwhile, the allegations were dismissed by Congress Metropolitan president Raghavendra Chaubey, who said that the arrests are a "premeditated conspiracy by the BJP government" to discredit their state chief Rai and the entire Congress party. Chaubey also defended the two arrested persons, describing them as "strong activists" of the Congress and instead accusing Khatoon of having filing a similar cases against "almost half a dozen individuals" in Varanasi. "This is her profession," Chaubey alleged, the news agency report mentioned.
