Talks underway to sell Swindon Regent Circus complex

Talks on the sale of a £50m leisure and retail complex - which is almost completely empty just 10 years after opening - have begun, BBC News understands.When Regent Circus was built on the former Swindon College site in Wiltshire, it was hoped it would beckon in a new era for the ailing town centre.But although there is space for a multiplex cinema, eight restaurants and a large supermarket, the only remaining business is Nando's.Details of who could buy the new site and when this could happen have not been confirmed.
The largest of the units – and most visibly empty from the rest of the town centre – is the former Morrisons supermarket, which closed in 2019.The supermarket chain remains contractually tied to the site.
At the time of the closure, the site's owners said the 15-year lease signed by Morrisons remained in place.The firm confirmed this was still the case in July 2025, but said negotiations to surrender the lease were under way.A Morrisons spokesperson said they were "hopeful this will be achieved in the next couple of months".The Cineworld which was previously based in the complex shut in 2024.Regent Circus previously went up for sale in 2020 and was believed to have been bought by UK Commercial Property REIT. That company has since been bought out by Tritax Big Box.Tritax Big Box has been approached for comment to confirm its ownership.

Ms Reeves pointed to Labour's £200 million investment in carbon capture in the north east of Scotland, which she said was welcomed by the industry. At the same time, Labour's windfall tax, she said, was not liked by the sector. 'I can understand that that's extra tax that the oil and gas sector are paying, but you can't really have one without the other,' she said. Defending Labour's record, she said her party had the 'balance about right'. 'But of course you're going to disappoint people,' she added. 'No-one wants to pay more taxes. 'Everyone wants more money than public spending – and borrowing is not a free option, because you've got to pay for it. 'I think people know those sort of constraints, but no-one really likes them and I'm the one, I guess, that has to sort the sums up.' Ms Reeves said Labour had to deliver on its general election campaign of change, adding that her party did not 'deserve' to win the next election if it does not deliver the change it promised.

Morrisons shoppers confused over new 'cleaning robots' Elsewhere, Morrisons shoppers have recently been sharing their bemusement after noticing a new addition in stores. Taking to social media, customers noticed posters confirming some supermarkets now had 'cleaning robots'. The large blue machines roam around stores and are "programmed to keep a safe distance" while people shop. However, some shoppers have been left confused by the technology, with one Morrisons customer asking, "Who signed this off?" Taking to the Reddit page r/Morrisons, one customer of the supermarket shared the poster explaining the new robots, which quickly gained a response from fellow shoppers. The poster read: "Shinnier floors. "Our new cleaning robot is programmed to keep a safe distance while you shop. "If you have any questions, please ask a member of our team." Some suggested that the robot would be taking jobs away, as one wrote: "Personally, just see a human losing their job..."
