Entain shares surge on earnings upgrade for US joint venture
Ladbrokes and Coral gambling giant Entain has seen shares jump higher after hiking the annual earnings outlook for its US joint venture BetMGM.
FTSE 100 listed Entain said it now expects BetMGM – which it jointly owns with MGM Resorts International – to deliver full-year underlying earnings of at least 100 million US dollars (£73.8 million) thanks to strong sports betting and iGaming trading.
Shares in Entain surged more than 8% higher on Monday morning thanks to the earnings upgrade.
BetMGM is now set for revenues of at least 2.6 billion dollars (£1.9 billion), having seen the ongoing 'positive momentum' from the first quarter carry through to the second quarter so far.
It had previously guided for 'positive' earnings and for revenues of between 2.4 billion dollars (£1.8 billion) and 2.5 billion dollars (£1.8 billion).
Entain said BetMGM's trading was 'broadly consistent' with the 34% rise in net revenue growth notched up in the first quarter.
It said: 'BetMGM remains excited about the significant opportunities ahead.
'Its strengthened business, revised strategic approach, and performance momentum further reinforce its confidence in future growth prospects and pathway to 500 million US dollars (£368 million) Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) in the coming years.'
Entain recently announced that former chairwoman Stella David will become its permanent chief executive, having taken on the role on an interim basis when Gavin Isaacs resigned in February after just five months in the role.
The group has now had four bosses in the past five years.
Entain has seen its stock market value plummet in recent years amid a series of legal woes.
In 2023, it was hit with a £585 million penalty agreed with HM Revenue & Customs to settle charges related to alleged bribery offences in Turkey.
The group was also taken to court by Australia's financial crime regulator late last year over allegations it breached anti-money laundering rules in the country.
The firm's market value had slumped since reaching a high in 2021.

Mother, Annabel Rook, fatally stabbed before gas explosion
A mother feared murdered inside her London house before a suspected gas explosion can be identified as a dedicated community worker. Annabel Rook, 46, was found fatally stabbed inside a house in Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, northeast London, just before 5am on Tuesday. Scotland Yard detectives are investigating after the mother of two suffered catastrophic stab wounds before the gas explosion rocked the affluent neighbourhood. She died at the scene. Two children, aged nine and seven, were taken to hospital but they were not believed to have been inside the property at the time of the explosion. Friends paid tribute to Rook, who co-founded Mamasuze, an arts project for vulnerable people including women and children who are survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence. Another added: 'It woke me up at about 5am this morning. It sounded like something dropping. There was an impact and then rubble falling. I think I heard a faint voice too. 'It didn't sound like an explosion, more like a wall coming down.' Six fire engines and 40 firefighters were called to the two-storey terraced house shortly before 5am on Tuesday. Police and paramedics were also called to the property in the borough of Hackney. SWNS Residents described hearing a bang and the sound of glass shattering. One man, who did not wish to be named, said he heard a crash 'like somebody dropped a massive glass cabinet from a crane'. He added: 'I looked out and saw panes of glass on the floor. You could tell it wasn't a car window. Eventually, I noticed the beam on the bay window was missing and could see some mild smoke coming out of the back. There was a guy rushing around, very distraught. He went round the back.' A 76-year-old neighbour said: 'I was asleep upstairs and heard a sudden bang then I saw all the glass on the floor. I was worried. Everybody on the street came out in their pyjamas.' Another neighbour said: 'I'm pretty sure it was two bangs I heard. There was lots of glass shattering. I knew it wasn't a car crashing because it sounded like lots of glasses had been smashed.' Police and the London Fire Brigade are investigating the cause of the explosion, which was brought under control by firefighters in about 40 minutes. The Nintendo Switch 2 launched nearly two weeks ago, and it's still proving difficult to find. While some lucky shoppers managed to grab a console from Best Buy or GameStop on launch day, many are still searching. Consoles at Walmart and Target continue to come in and out of stock online, so it's worth refreshing those pages throughout the day. Costco briefly offered next-day delivery for members last week, but delivery has been delayed, so it's now estimated to arrive by June 20. Best Buy even went live online last week, offering the console and bundle for in-store pickup only, but stock vanished within minutes. Since then, it's returned to in-store-only sales, with strict one-per-customer limits and stock varying wildly by location. Below, you'll find the latest updates from major US retailers. How to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 in the US Nintendo If you want to buy a Switch 2 from Nintendo, the gaming giant is still enforcing its invite-only system. To be eligible, you need an active 12-month Switch Online subscription and at least 50 hours of gameplay on your Nintendo account. Even then, there's no guarantee you'll get an invite. If selected, you'll receive a notification with a purchase window. Invites are still being sent out, but they've been sporadic.
