Entain shares surge on earnings upgrade for US joint venture

Independent16-06-2025
Ladbrokes and Coral gambling giant Entain has seen shares jump higher after hiking the annual earnings outlook for its US joint venture BetMGM.
FTSE 100 listed Entain said it now expects BetMGM – which it jointly owns with MGM Resorts International – to deliver full-year underlying earnings of at least 100 million US dollars (£73.8 million) thanks to strong sports betting and iGaming trading.
Shares in Entain surged more than 8% higher on Monday morning thanks to the earnings upgrade.
BetMGM is now set for revenues of at least 2.6 billion dollars (£1.9 billion), having seen the ongoing 'positive momentum' from the first quarter carry through to the second quarter so far.
It had previously guided for 'positive' earnings and for revenues of between 2.4 billion dollars (£1.8 billion) and 2.5 billion dollars (£1.8 billion).
Entain said BetMGM's trading was 'broadly consistent' with the 34% rise in net revenue growth notched up in the first quarter.
It said: 'BetMGM remains excited about the significant opportunities ahead.
'Its strengthened business, revised strategic approach, and performance momentum further reinforce its confidence in future growth prospects and pathway to 500 million US dollars (£368 million) Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) in the coming years.'
Entain recently announced that former chairwoman Stella David will become its permanent chief executive, having taken on the role on an interim basis when Gavin Isaacs resigned in February after just five months in the role.
The group has now had four bosses in the past five years.
Entain has seen its stock market value plummet in recent years amid a series of legal woes.
In 2023, it was hit with a £585 million penalty agreed with HM Revenue & Customs to settle charges related to alleged bribery offences in Turkey.
The group was also taken to court by Australia's financial crime regulator late last year over allegations it breached anti-money laundering rules in the country.
The firm's market value had slumped since reaching a high in 2021.

Grocery price inflation falls slightly to 5% in August

Supermarket inflation fell slightly this month but remains 'well past the point at which price rises really start to bite', according to latest figures. Grocery prices were 5% higher than a year ago in the four weeks to August 10, according to market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator, which was recently renamed from Kantar. However, this was down from July's 5.2%, which represented a rise from inflation of 4.7% a month earlier and marked the highest level since January 2024. Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said: 'We've seen a marginal drop in grocery price inflation this month, but we're still well past the point at which price rises really start to bite and consumers are continuing to adapt their behaviour to make ends meet. 'What people pay for their supermarket shopping often impacts their spending across other parts of the high street too, including their eating and drinking habits out of the home.' Mr McKevitt said casual and fast service restaurants especially had seen a decline in visitors over the summer, with trips falling by 6% during the three months to mid-July 2025 compared with last year. Despite the ongoing cost pressures, customers still appear to be seeking to include treats in their baskets, with sales of branded grocery items growing by 6.1% this month, ahead of own-label alternatives which were up by 4.1%. Branded sales mad up 46.4% of all grocery spending but were particularly popular across personal care, confectionery, hot drinks and soft drinks, where they accounted for more than 75% of money through the tills. Sales of premium own-label products also rose by 11.5% this period. Worldpanel's data also shows that more than half of households bought a box of frozen fish fingers over the last year, ahead of the product turning 70 in September. Mr McKevitt said: 'The humble fish finger remains as popular as ever and nearly one billion were sold in the past year, with more than half of households grabbing a box.' He added: 'The average home cook now spends three minutes less preparing the evening meal than they did in 2017 at just under 31 minutes. 'We can see this trend in the growth of things like microwaveable rice, ready meals and chilled pizza too, which have grown by 8%, 6% and 5% respectively.' Lidl and Ocado were tied for top spot as the fastest growing grocers over the 12 weeks to August 10, with sales at both retailers up by 10.7% compared to the same period last year. Tesco enjoyed its largest monthly share gain since December 2024 as its hold of the market rose by 0.8 percentage points to 28.4%, driven by sales growth of 7.4% compared to last year. Asda and Co-op both saw sales down on a year ago, by 2.6% and 3.2% respectively.

Woman sexually assaulted on Gatwick flight denied compensation due to loophole

A woman who was sexually assaulted on a flight to the UK is ineligible for government compensation due to what her lawyers say is a gap in the law. The woman, who cannot be named and is referred to as Kelly, was attacked while sleeping on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Gatwick in September 2024. Her attacker was arrested when the plane landed at Gatwick and sentenced to prison in May. However, Kelly was denied a payout through the Criminal Injuries Compensation (CIC) Scheme That is because the attack occurred on a plane that was not registered in Britain. Law firm Leigh Day, which is representing her, has written to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, urging her to change the law. Kelly, who is in her 20s and lives in London, said: 'I do not understand why I, and other victims like me, have been excluded from the CIC Scheme. 'I was attacked on a flight en route to the UK, I am a UK citizen, and this crime was investigated and prosecuted by British authorities. 'I should be entitled to compensation, and being excluded from the scheme is unfair and illogical. 'I am still suffering with the effects of the attack and want to move forward with my life.' The Civil Aviation Act was updated in 1996 to ensure criminal acts on foreign planes bound for the UK can be prosecuted in UK criminal courts. Leigh Day solicitor Claire Powell said: 'Our client suffered an horrific sexual attack on a UK-bound flight. 'She was refused compensation under the Criminal Injuries Compensation scheme simply because it was a foreign flight and the rules have not been amended in line with the updates to the Civil Aviation Act. 'It is a gap that needs closing urgently and we trust the Justice Secretary will agree, particularly in light of this Government's commitment to addressing violence against women and girls.' A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: 'Our thoughts remain with this victim, and we remain resolute in our mission to halve violence against women and girls in a decade. 'The rules that the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority follows, and the values of payments for injuries, are set by Parliament. 'Other routes are available for victims to receive support.' Kelly was attacked by Momade Jussab, of Swinfield Close, Feltham, who was sitting next to her and put his hands down her trousers. He was 66 when he was handed a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence at Lewes Crown Court in May after being found guilty of one count of sexual assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault.

Woman who made baby vape in clip apologizes with pathetic excuse

An influencer has admitted to forcing a little boy she was babysitting to smoke a vape after the shocking video she filmed resurfaced online. Fiona Jordan, 23, was slammed after a clip of a young child vaping in her care was posted on social media. In the footage, the unnamed boy was seen putting his mouth on the device, held out to him by another person. He exhaled and smoke drifted from his mouth, causing the girls, including Jordan, to laugh as the child coughed and looked confused. Hours after Daily Mail reached out for comment, Jordan admitted her involvement, saying she was 15 at the time and now takes full responsibility. She told her followers: 'I was not in the right state of mind. As a young girl, I was making a lot of reckless choices, and honestly, I made a terrible decision. 'Recording it and being there makes me just as guilty, and I take full responsibility for this. I am truly, deeply sorry for the pain that I have caused that family, now and then. 'I can't change what I did, but I can acknowledge how wrong it was.' Responsibility: Hours after being contacted by Daily Mail for comment, Jordan admitted her involvement in the scandal in an apology video - taking 'full responsibility' for her actions Jordan said she was not in the correct headspace as her mother had recently died, and she was hanging around with the wrong crowd of people. The original video, filmed eight years ago, was uploaded to Instagram. She faced criticism after the video resurfaced online, with one person writing: 'Psychotic behavior. Truly awful to see that poor baby and hear them laughing. Pure evil.' Another added: 'The way he looks sad and coughs after, wow they are monsters.' A third said: 'Disturbing she thinks child abuse is FUNNY... an absolutely vile individual.'
