UK secretly relocated thousands of Afghans after 2022 data breach, reveals Defence Minister Healey
Thousands of Afghans who worked with the UK government and their families were secretly relocated to Britain after a major data breach in 2022 exposed their identities and put their lives at risk, Defence Minister John Healey revealed in Parliament on Tuesday.
According to an AFP report, the previously undisclosed evacuation programme was made public after the UK High Court lifted a strict reporting ban, known as a super-injunction, which had prevented any mention of the events.

Healey told MPs that in February 2022, a UK government official accidentally leaked a spreadsheet containing the personal details of nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied for relocation to the UK.
The breach too place just six months after the Taliban returned to power in Kabul, heightening fears for the safety of those who had supported British operations in Afghanistan, added the report.
'This was a serious departmental error,' AFP quoted Healey as saying, adding 'lives may have been at stake'.
Healey revealed that the previous Conservative government launched a covert programme to evacuate Afghans deemed 'at the highest risk of reprisals by the Taliban' following the fall of Kabul in 2021.
Under the initiative, known as the Afghan Response Route, approximately 900 Afghans and 3,600 of their family members have so far been relocated to the UK or are currently in transit.
The operation has cost the government an estimated £400 million, Healey said.
They are part of a broader group of around 36,000 Afghans accepted by the UK under various resettlement schemes since the Taliban takeover in August 2021.
Healey, who was Labour's opposition defence spokesman at the time, said he was first briefed on the secret programme in December 2023.

However, the Conservative government sought and secured a rare 'super-injunction' that prevented any mention of the operation in Parliament or the press.
'Ministers decided not to tell parliamentarians at an earlier stage about the data incident, as the widespread publicity would increase the risk of the Taliban obtaining the dataset,' he was quoted as saying.
After taking office as defence minister in the new Labour government, Healey ordered a review of the secret evacuation scheme.
The review found 'very little intent by the Taliban to conduct a campaign of retribution,' he told Parliament.
As a result, the Afghan Response Route has now been closed. Healey also issued an apology for the 2022 data breach that triggered the operation, stating it 'should never have happened.'

The UN mission said at the time it was looking into claims of ill treatment of the women and extortion in exchange for their release. The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces. Since then, the Taliban administration has sought international recognition while enforcing its interpretation of Islamic law. In July, Russia became the only country to grant formal recognition.

Farmer groups to step up campaign against FTA with U.S.
A general body meeting of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) held in New Delhi on Sunday (July 20, 2025) has warned the Union government against going ahead with the proposed trade agreement with the United States. The SKM said, in a statement on Monday (July 21, 2025), that the general body has also called for nationwide protests against the deal as it could act against the interests of farmers. The SKM will observe August 13 as 'Corporations Quit India Day' and said it seriously apprehends that the Narendra Modi government is surrendering to the diktats of the 'U.S. Imperialism' to sign the free trade agreement (FTA). The SKM said such an agreement could lead to opening up of agriculture, dairy and food markets and that will hurt the interests of the people. 'The FTA is supposed to come into effect by August 1, 2025. August 9 is the 83rd anniversary of the Quit India Day movement against British colonialism. To protest the BJP-led NDA government's moves to accept USA's pressures and increase imports of food and dairy items, including Genetically Modified foods and penetration of multinational corporations in food markets, SKM will issue a mass warning through these mass protests,' the statement said. 'Peasants will raise the slogan 'Corporations Quit India' on August 13 by organising tractor/ motor vehicle parades and protest demonstrations and burn effigies of the US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' the statement added. The meeting congratulated the leadership of the united trade union movement for the strike action on July 9. 'This was the 22nd general strike since the invention of neo-liberal policies and its success has filled confidence to all the democratic sections in the society that the entire working people are ready to fight back the anti-people policies of the ruling classes,' the statement said.

Chandigarh, Jul 21 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday emphasised the need for stronger ties with the United Kingdom in key sectors such as textile, horticulture, education, light engineering, sports, bicycle manufacturing and defence. During a meeting with British Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett at his official residence here, the chief minister highlighted the age-old relationship between Punjab and the UK, noting the significant contributions of the Punjabi diaspora to the UK's economy. He also underscored the importance of developing more ambitious and comprehensive agreements, particularly in the aforementioned sectors. In a statement, Mann advocated for the establishment of a structured communication mechanism between the governments of Punjab and the UK. Mann said such a framework would facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise, thereby promoting growth and prosperity on both sides. There is tremendous potential for collaboration between Punjab and the UK, particularly in the sectors of mutual importance, Mann said.
