Book Review: Louis Sachar's debut adult novel is a zany adventure of science and magic

Anatole isn't just any magician. He's the magician of Tiger Castle, whom the king of Esquaveta once declared to be the greatest magician in all the land.
'The Magician of Tiger Castle' is Anatole's chance to set the record straight. Not about his greatness — he fully accepts the title the king bestowed on him — but about what really happened in 1523 with the princess of Esquaveta, the apprentice scribe she fell in love with, the prince she was betrothed to, and the prisoner who was kept in the dungeon for 100 years.
It's the debut adult novel from Louis Sachar, author of the Newbery Medal-winning middle-grade novel, 'Holes,' and the 'Wayside School' series of memorably wacky vignettes. 'The Magician of Tiger Castle,' out Tuesday from Ace Hardcover, is every bit as creative and endearing as Sachar's dozens of children's and young adult books that enamoured kids and teachers alike for decades.
The novel is told like a memoir, first-person from the magician himself. Only, he's never been a true magician; we quickly see that he's more of a misunderstood pioneer of medicine and modern science.
Calling attention to the thin, hazy line between science and magic, Anatole also dips into miniature medical history lessons. So, while you're following the story of this bald magician, hypersmart scribe and headstrong princess, you're also learning about why old-timey physicians wore beaked masks or how leeches are still sometimes used in medicine today.
Though it's classified as an adult novel, 'The Magician of Tiger Castle' is fairly clean, with only one or two curse words, a handful of innuendoes and some light violence, but nothing explicit.
You can read the surface-level story and have a great time, but Sachar also brings literary elements to the modern fantasy-adventure table. Chess games reveal the protagonists' strengths while mirroring their evolving relationships, as well as their increasingly complicated schemes.
'The Magician' is self-aware and fourth-wall breaking, stepping outside the narrative to explain a word choice or cultural context for the fictional kingdom set somewhere near modern France. The plot is like a zany Dungeons & Dragons campaign played with friends; the storyline is meandering but with a definite aim and purpose, and the characters are lovably boisterous (or hateful, in the case of the antagonists). It's funny, surprising, smart and weird, and fully lives up to the high bar you'd expect from a great like Sachar.

Britney Spears ‘Blindsided' by Ex Over Explosive Memoir Announcement, Says Source

is reportedly feeling 'blindsided' by her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, who recently announced his new tell-all book. The upcoming memoir titled 'You Thought You Knew' has promised to share details about the dancer and DJ's former marriage with the singer. It will reportedly also look back at Spears' 13-year conservatorship. Amid this, according to the latest claims, the pop star is not taking the memoir announcement well. Moreover, Spears could even hit back at Federline with a legal fight. Britney Spears is not taking ex-husband's decision to come out with a memoir, says source A new report suggests Britney Spears is not looking forward to Kevin Federline's upcoming memoir, 'You Thought You Knew.' Rob Shuter's #ShuterScoop exclusively learned from sources that the 43-year-old singer is 'furious and terrified' over the announcement. Spears and Federline were married from 2004 to 2007. The memoir will reportedly include details about that period, as well as the pop icon's mental health and 13-year conservatorship. Following Federline's announcement, Spears has reportedly been feeling 'blindsided.' It comes after the mother of two released her memoir 'The Woman in Me' in 2023. A close friend told #ShuterScoop that Spears is 'livid.' They claimed that Federline 'said nothing when she was paying his bills.' The friend wondered, 'But now that the checks stopped, he's ready to talk?' Last year, TMZ reported that Spears sent her final child support payment to Federline in November. This was after their youngest son, Jayden James, turned 18 and finished high school. The former couple also shares their elder son Sean Preston. Meanwhile, #ShuterScoop learned that Spears 'thought she was finally healing' after her book garnered public support. However, the 'Gimme More' hitmaker is now reportedly 'back on defense' amid her ex-husband's memoir announcement. The friend stated, 'This isn't about truth,' and added, 'It's about money and relevance.' Spears is reportedly also considering legal action, according to the exclusive report. The source claimed that she is 'ready to go to war.' Kevin Federline's 'You Thought You Knew' will be released on October 21. Kid Cudi Gets Candid On Drug Overdose, Suicidal Thoughts In New Memoir

Kid Cudi is baring the darkest corners of his soul in his forthcoming memoir, Cudi: The Memoir, set to release on Aug. 12. The genre-bending rapper, who has long been revered for blending vulnerability and raw emotion into his music, is now offering an unflinching account of the mental health battles and drug addiction that nearly cost him his life—even at the height of his fame. 'I was at peace with dying,' Cudi writes, per GQ, recalling one harrowing moment in vivid detail. 'You made great music that people loved,' I thought. 'But this is the end.'' He describes collapsing to the floor, paralyzed by a mix of physical and emotional weight. The revelations come during a period when his debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day had catapulted him into stardom. Yet behind the success was a man spiraling. 'I couldn't make sense of what was plaguing me,' he admits. 'It was all happening so fast. The first Man on the Moon had been out for about a year and I was on a rocket ship. Grappling with fame pushed me toward cocaine, which I only ever did alone. I was drawn to it in isolation, and my time by myself was increasing.' He even recalls doing 'lines that were as wide as my pinky.' Cudi confesses that cocaine became his crutch as he became more reclusive and disconnected. 'The coke felt like a necessary countermeasure for my celebrity, but it was wreaking havoc on my life, creatively and personally. I had become super volatile emotionally. My relationships were in shambles, and I couldn't get songs out like I wanted. The anger was boiling in me. My rage came from my reality not aligning with my dream.' He continues: 'I thought being set financially was going to save me and make everything all right. I thought being Kid Cudi would transform my life in all the best ways. It didn't.' Perhaps most heartbreaking is his admission of just how close he came to ending it all. 'After we'd finished a session, I'd be alone Googling exit bags,' he writes. 'I was thinking about a way I could actually do it. I was plotting it. There's a song at the end of Speedin' Bullet where I say good-bye, and that was meant to be my final album. I was going to kill myself at the end of that album, or before it came out, or during that cycle. I was not planning to live that year. Not many people around me expected me to either.' Now years removed from the depths of that despair, Cudi's memoir promises to be more than a tell-all—it's a sobering reminder of the silent struggles that can persist even under the glow of fame. For fans who've found healing in his music, Cudi: The Memoir may offer the most intimate chapter yet. "That was my life for a while, you know? I was running to the grave and I had a death wish," Cudi told CBS anchor Anthony Mason about his prior drug addiction. The Cleveland native called himself "dark and suicidal" while adjusting to fame. The memoir begins with Cudi recalling the overdose, which occurred in his New York apartment, while his career was "just starting." "I mean, the success was there, but happiness... I don't think I felt happy," he continued. Cudi added, "I hard time dealing with the fame, and the reason why I was doing cocaine was so I didn't blow my brains out." In an excerpt of the memoir via GQ, Cudi wrote that during the near-fatal overdose, he was "doing more coke than I ever had in my life." "I tried to get up off the bed, but my legs wouldn't work, so I collapsed to the floor and started to crawl," he wrote. "Eventually, I gave in and just laid on the ground. My heart was racing. It felt like it was going to burst any minute." At the time, Cudi was working on his sophomore album, Man on the Moon II, with the project's tone reflecting his "dark mindset." "I felt like I had demons latched on to me. I needed to soundtrack the moodiness I was feeling," he continued. Sicne growing out of that drug-fueled phase, Cudi has embraced a lighter tone in his newer music, like his upcoming eleventh solo project, Free, which releases on August 22.
