NFL vet has turned into NASCAR pit crew star
After a brief NFL career, former HBCU football star Marshall McFadden has carved out a new path in NASCAR, where he puts his athleticism to work.
The former South Carolina State linebacker now serves as the jackman for NASCAR driver Ross Chastain's No. 1 Chevrolet ZL1 crew.
'After being in the NFL and college football, it gave me the perfect ingredients to cross over to NASCAR. Here, that same professionalism and athleticism applies," McFadden told the Winston-Salem Journal. 'The understanding of how things are done is similar, and that's how I worked my way up to being a jackman.'
McFadden made his mark at South Carolina State University, an HBCU known for producing NFL players. After tallying 12 tackles in 2007, he broke out in 2008 with 88 tackles and five sacks. His performance earned him MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors and confirmed his ability to lead and disrupt offenses.
He began his professional career in 2012 when the Pittsburgh Steelers signed him to a reserve/future contract. Although released during final cuts, the team added him to the practice squad. He earned a promotion to the active roster in November but was later released and re-signed to the practice squad.
In 2013, McFadden joined the Oakland Raiders' practice squad. He moved to the St. Louis Rams in 2014, earning a spot on the active roster in October. He remained with the team until September 2015, when he was released during final cuts.
Now, McFadden is finding success in NASCAR as Chastain continues to climb the ranks.

Chargers' Cameron Dicker says coach Jim Harbaugh 'loves you like your own parents'
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is entering his second season coaching the team, and he has already made a strong impression on his players. Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker raved about Harbaugh's ability to connect with players and his authenticity. "It's fun. It's funny he loves you like your own parents love you. So, he is extremely genuine, which is really fun for all of us. But, man, you never know what you are going to get," Dicker told Fox News Digital Wednesday night. "He has some funny things he says in meetings, same thing (he does) with the media. So, what you see is the way he is with us. It is great." Last season, the Chargers went 11-6 and made the playoffs in Harbaugh's first season. They lost 32-12 in the AFC wild-card round to the Houston Texans. Dicker said the Chargers need "to have fun together" to get over the hump. The 25-year-old kicker said his coach does just that. "I think it is getting together again. Bringing the team together (and) allowing us to have fun together. I think that is what Jim Harbaugh does. We saw that year one with him," Dicker said. "He unites a team. Everyone has fun around him. He's a funny weird dude. He's awesome, a very genuine guy, which is incredible. Also brings out the genuine person you are. And he tries to attack every day like that. He is awesome." Last season, Dicker made 33 of 36 extra point attempts and 39 of 42 field goal attempts. Dicker normally does most of the kicking in his home stadium, SoFi Stadium, but that is about to change. SoFi Stadium is one of the 16 host stadiums for next year's World Cup, and Dicker is excited about it. "The atmosphere, it is going to be incredible. I think it adds another level when you bring in international fans, when you bring in (people) who are just repping their countries. It is going to be … so exciting. I am pumped," Dicker said. Former Morehouse basketball coach lands new job
Allen University has named Douglas Whittler as the new head men's basketball coach for the Yellow Jackets, bringing on board a proven leader and championship-winning coach, formerly of Morehouse College. "We couldn't be more excited to have Coach Whittler," said Athletic Director Phillip Wallace Jr. "I've known him for years. His leadership and coaching are top notch. I have no doubt he will lead us to a championship." Coaching Success at Morehouse Whittler comes to Allen after four years as head coach at Morehouse College. He posted a 76-40 overall record with a 65.5% win rate. In conference play, he went 59-21, good for a 73.4% win rate. He holds the record for the most wins by a Morehouse coach in their first four seasons. His conference win percentage is the second highest in program history. His teams were dominant. From 2022 to 2024, Morehouse won three straight SIAC East Division titles. In 2024–25, the team finished second in the division. Player Brandon Peters made the SIAC All-Freshman Team. Cedric Taylor III earned First Team honors and won the Elite 16 academic award. In 2025, Whittler was one of four coaches selected to lead the HBCU All-Star Game. A New Chapter at Allen "I want to thank President McNealey and Director Wallace for this chance," said Whittler. "My family and I are honored to join the Allen University community. I'm excited to build something special here. We will compete for championships in the SIAC and on a national level." President Ernest McNealey also praised the hire. "I congratulate AD Wallace for selecting Coach Whittler," McNealey said. "We're looking forward to a competitive season." Deep Coaching Roots Whittler began coaching at Morehouse in 2009. He served as an assistant coach for six years. In 2015, he became associate head coach. He held that role until 2021. That year, he stepped in as interim head coach after the death of Coach Grady Brewer. As an assistant, Whittler helped develop eight all-conference players. He also coached three newcomers of the year, two SIAC Players of the Year, and three All-Americans. Whittler played at Morehouse, earning first-team All-Conference honors. He holds a degree in kinesiology, sports studies and physical education. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two sons, Sir and Remy, and a daughter, Savannah.
