With Iran launching a missile attack on a US airbase in Qatar, tensions have mounted in the region, and a few countries, including Qatar, have closed their airspace.
Besides, flights of Air India Express and IndiGo to the Middle East have been impacted, and some of them have been diverted.
New Delhi/ Mumbai, Jun 23 (PTI) Air India has stopped flight operations to Europe and five destinations in the US and Canada amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Air India's long-haul flights to Europe and North America overfly the Middle East, and the airspace curbs have disrupted its services.
Amid the developing situation in the Middle East, Air India said it has ceased all operations to the region as well as to and from the East Coast of North America and Europe with immediate effect, until further notice.
Services have been temporarily stopped to European cities as well as to four US airports — New York, Newark, Chicago and Washington — and to Toronto (Canada).
'Our India-bound flights from North America are diverting back to their respective origins, and others are being diverted back to India or rerouted away from the closed airspaces,' the airline said in a statement.
The airline said it is in continuous consultation with its external security advisers and is vigilantly monitoring the evolving situation.
'We request the understanding of all passengers who may be affected by this disruption that's beyond an airline's control,' the carrier said.
Air India Express diverted two Doha-bound flights due to the closure of Qatar airspace.
'As a result of the ongoing situation in the Middle East and suspension of Qatar airspace, Air India Express has diverted our Doha-bound flight from Kochi to Muscat and returned our flight bound from Kannur,' the airline said in a statement.
In a post on X, IndiGo said that in light of the recent developments in the Middle East, flight arrivals and departures from Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, Dammam, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Ras AI-Khaimah and Tbilisi are impacted.
The airline also said it is actively monitoring the situation and adjusting operations to ensure the highest level of safety.
SpiceJet, in a post on X, said that due to airspace closure at Dubai, all departures and arrivals, and their consequential flights, might be affected.
Air India Express operates 25 weekly flights to Qatar's capital, Doha. It has direct services to Doha from Kannur, Kochi, Kozhikode, Mangaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and Tiruchchirappalli.
Besides, the carrier has eight one-stop destinations from Doha — Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. PTI RAM IAS RHL

Rupee sinks 23 paise to close at 86.78 against US dollar

At the interbank foreign exchange the rupee opened at 86.75 and traded in the range of 87.67 to 86.85 before settling at its five-month low of 86.78 against the greenback, down 23 paise from its previous close of 86.55 on Friday. Lacklusture sentiment in the domestic equity markets and outflow of foreign capital further pressured the rupee, according to forex experts. Mumbai, Jun 23 (PTI) The rupee plunged 23 paise to close at a five-month low of 86.78 against the US dollar on Monday amid a strengthening greenback and volatile crude oil prices following the US strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. The rupee had earlier recorded the low level on January 13 when it had closed at 86.70 against the dollar. 'The rupee fell to 86.85 due to higher oil prices in the morning and then oil started to fall and gave importers an opportunity to buy dollars for their near-term imports. The rupee rose to 86.67 but was not able to rise any further as oil demand was quite high,' Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. 'The rupee went back to 85.82 where the Reserve Bank was a seller and kept the rupee movement on hold beyond today's low,' he said. According to Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, the rupee declined on weak domestic markets and geopolitical uncertainty. Surge in crude oil prices and selling pressure from foreign investors too weighed on the rupee. US dollar strengthened amid safe haven demand on geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. 'Traders may take cues from PMI and existing home sales data from the US. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 86.40 to Rs 87,' Choudhary added. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.08 per cent to USD 77.07 per barrel in futures trade. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.60 per cent higher at 99.29. Trade agreements with US, EU to be concluded soon: Sitharaman

New Delhi, Jun 24 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said negotiations for the proposed free trade agreements with the US and European Union (EU) are progressing at a fast pace and would be concluded soon. All efforts are being made to boost exports to achieve the ambitious target of USD 2 trillion by 2030. India has already signed free trade agreements with the UAE, Australia, and 4-nation EFTA (European Free Trade Association) bloc and negotiations have been completed with the UK, she said adding "with the US and the European Union, negotiations are really intensely going on and should come to conclusion sooner." The emphasis now is on concluding more free trade agreements, she said while inaugurating Trade Conclave by India Exim Bank here. Referring to the country's exports, the finance minister said total exports of goods and services reached a record high of USD 825 billion in FY25, achieving 6 per cent growth over previous year. While global exports grew by only 4 per cent, India's exporters managed to fast-track and cross growth of 6.3 per cent despite global uncertainties on trade front, she said. Observing that exporters are "swimming against tides" , she assured all support to them and urged them to focus on innovation and finding newer markets for their products. Speaking at the event, Financial Services Secretary M Nagaraju said India's growth prospects remain bright even as the world economy is troubled by geopolitical uncertainties and significant headwinds emanating from it. "Even amidst all the global headwinds, India continues to be a beacon of hope," he said. Nagaraju said that India's exports, which the commerce ministry is "trying very hard" to integrate into the global value chain, are doing well irrespective of the challenges. Exports from the pharmaceuticals and gems and jewellery sectors are showing resilience, he said adding in this endeavour, the finance ministry is committed to extending support through policy, schemes and financial aid. "Our financial systems are strong with adequate capital and low non-performing assets," he said, adding, this gives strong support to India's financial needs.
