Trade agreements with US, EU to be concluded soon: Sitharaman
New Delhi, Jun 24 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said negotiations for the proposed free trade agreements with the US and European Union (EU) are progressing at a fast pace and would be concluded soon.
All efforts are being made to boost exports to achieve the ambitious target of USD 2 trillion by 2030.
India has already signed free trade agreements with the UAE, Australia, and 4-nation EFTA (European Free Trade Association) bloc and negotiations have been completed with the UK, she said adding "with the US and the European Union, negotiations are really intensely going on and should come to conclusion sooner."
The emphasis now is on concluding more free trade agreements, she said while inaugurating Trade Conclave by India Exim Bank here.
Referring to the country's exports, the finance minister said total exports of goods and services reached a record high of USD 825 billion in FY25, achieving 6 per cent growth over previous year.
While global exports grew by only 4 per cent, India's exporters managed to fast-track and cross growth of 6.3 per cent despite global uncertainties on trade front, she said.
Observing that exporters are "swimming against tides" , she assured all support to them and urged them to focus on innovation and finding newer markets for their products.
Speaking at the event, Financial Services Secretary M Nagaraju said India's growth prospects remain bright even as the world economy is troubled by geopolitical uncertainties and significant headwinds emanating from it.
"Even amidst all the global headwinds, India continues to be a beacon of hope," he said.
Nagaraju said that India's exports, which the commerce ministry is "trying very hard" to integrate into the global value chain, are doing well irrespective of the challenges.
Exports from the pharmaceuticals and gems and jewellery sectors are showing resilience, he said adding in this endeavour, the finance ministry is committed to extending support through policy, schemes and financial aid.
"Our financial systems are strong with adequate capital and low non-performing assets," he said, adding, this gives strong support to India's financial needs.

K'taka Home Minister Parameshwara says his statement was misunderstood, no dearth of funds in state
'I have not said like that, who said there is no money? I have defended the government, saying that we have presented a record budget….as someone said things jokingly during the speech, I reacted in a similar fashion, that's all,' Parameshwara told reporters here on Tuesday, when questioned about his statement. The senior Congress leader was clarifying the statement he made on Monday while addressing a gathering at Badami in Bagalkote district, where he had said that the state government doesn't have money. His comments were picked up by the media, and the opposition BJP too used it to target the government, alleging that the financial condition of the state has deteriorated. Bengaluru, Jun 24 (PTI) Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday clarified that there is no shortage of funds in the state government for any reason, and that his earlier statement has been misunderstood. Reiterating that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has presented a Rs 4.09 lakh crore budget, he said, 'I have said that there is no shortage of funds. Rs 22,000 crore has been allocated for irrigation in the budget. Allocations have been made for the five guarantee schemes in the budget, and instructions have been made to prepare an action plan for Rs 50 crore in every constituency. I said all of this in my address. When someone said something jokingly, I might have reacted.' 'I'm now saying officially that there is no financial distress in our government. I'm saying it very clearly. Sometimes, there may be a delay in the release of funds, as DPR and estimates have to be prepared before releasing money. There may be some delay in that; other than that, there is nothing else. There is no shortage of funds in our government for any reason. I'm making it clear. If anyone has misunderstood my statement, I'm correcting that,' he added. The Home Minister while addressing a gathering in Badami on Monday had suggested local MLA Bheemasen B Chimmanakatti to prepare a Rs 1,000 crore project for the development of the Badami town, which is of historical and archaeological importance, and send it to the centre, as the state doesn't have money. 'Prepare the project (for Badami's development) and send it to the Centre, we don't have money, Siddaramaiah doesn't have money now. We have given you (people) in the form of rice, pulses, oil,' he had said. PTI KSU ADB This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.

Rupee surges 75 paise to close at 86.03 against U.S. dollar as global crude oil prices crash
The rupee recovered from record low level and closed with a steep gain of 75 paise at 86.03 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar as global crude oil prices went down following hopes of de-escalation in West Asia tensions. A weak greenback and positive sentiments in the domestic equity markets further boosted the local unit, according to forex traders. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, plummeted 3.19% to $69.20 per barrel in futures trade as U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local unit opened at 86.07 against the U.S. dollar and traded in the range of 85.91-86.27 before closing at 86.03 (provisional), up 75 paise from its previous close. The rupee had plunged 23 paise to close at a five-month low of 86.78 against the U.S. dollar on Monday. Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said the rupee gained on improved global risk sentiments on reports of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Also, Choudhary said a sharp decline in crude oil prices and positive domestic markets favoured the rupee, while the dollar index softened amid the ceasefire reports. Going forward, he said, traders may take cues from US consumer confidence and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's testimony. "USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 85.60-86.40." Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.48% lower at 97.94. In the domestic equity market Sensex rose 158.32 points to settle at 82,055.11, while Nifty climbed 72.45 points to 25,044.35.
