‘We Have BrahMos': Asaduddin Owaisi Hits Out At Shehbaz Sharif Over Indus Treaty Threat

AIMIM President Owaisi criticised Pakistan PM Sharif's threats over the Indus Waters Treaty, stating India has the BrahMos missile.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday strongly criticised Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over his threat to India over the Indus Waters Treaty, saying that such bogus threats won't have any effect on India.
While speaking to reporters, the Hyderabad MP said that India has the BrahMos missile and the neighboruing country should be mindful before making such ridiculous statements.
'' BrahMos hain hamare paas '(We have BrahMos missile). They made statements that he was in a swimming costume when he realised nine air bases had been attacked. They should not make such ridiculous statements. As a PM of a country, you may not have any dignity, but these statements won't have any effect on us. Enough is enough," the AIMIM MP as quoted by news agency PTI.
His remarks came after the Pakistan Prime Minister threatened India for keeping the Indus Waters Treat in abeyance following the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack, saying that any attempt to stop the flow of water into Pakistan is in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty, and would be met with a 'decisive response".
While addressing an event in Islamabad on Tuesday, Sharif said, 'I want to tell the enemy today that if you threaten to hold our water, then keep this in mind — you cannot snatch even one drop of Pakistan."
He warned that if India tried, 'you will again be taught such a lesson that you will be left holding your ears."
A day earlier, former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called the suspension of the IWT an attack on the Indus Valley Civilisation, warning that the country would not back down if pushed into war.
Before that, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir reportedly said Islamabad would destroy any dam if India cut off water flow. 'We will wait for India to build a dam, and when they do so, we will destroy it," Dawn quoted him as saying.
'The Indus River is not the Indians' family property. We have no shortage of resources to undo the Indian designs to stop the river."
While addresing an event in Florida during his visit to the US, he threatened India, warning that Islamabad would plunge the region into nuclear war and could take 'almost half of the world" down if faced with an existential threat in a future conflict with New Delhi.
On several occasions, Munir has blamed India without any evidence for the recent tensions in the region in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. After the Pahalgam attack, the diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan downgraded with New Delhi announcing several punitive measures, including suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, cutting Islamabad Mission strength and expulsion of its military attaches.
India and Pakistan exchanged cross-border hostilities for four days after the former launched Operation Sindoor against terror camps in the neighbouring country. New Delhi struck several air bases and dealt a crushing blow to Islamabad Army's capabilities, while also effectively repelling missile and drone attacks.

Tungabhadra dam crest gate replacement underway: Ktaka Deputy CM Shivakumar

Last Updated: Bengaluru, Aug 20 (PTI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday said the work to replace all 33 crest gates of the Tungabhadra dam is underway. According to Shivakumar, the Tungabhadra Board has awarded the contract to an Ahmedabad-based firm, and fabrication of six gates is taking place in Gadag and Hosapete with the assistance of JSW Steel. Necessary equipment has started arriving, and engineers in Andhra Pradesh have been asked to accelerate the work. He has also directed that more agencies be brought in to accelerate the project. 'For safety reasons, only 80 TMC of water can be stored, so it is not possible to release water for the second crop this year," the Deputy CM told the Legislative Assembly. If water is released, the crest gate installation would be hampered. Drinking water and industrial supply would continue as usual, and urgent repair works would be taken up, he added. 'As suggested by experts like Kannaiah Naidu, only 76 per cent storage — about 80 TMC — will be maintained. The Tungabhadra Board has taken this decision. Our state has no authority on this board. Whether others give money or not, we are ready to bear the cost to save the dam. We will protect our farmers as well as theirs." Karnataka bears 66 per cent of the repair cost while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together share the remaining 33 per cent. 'Andhra Pradesh has not earmarked any funds. I told officials we will pay even their share, but they are not willing to take it. We came forward to pay because we don't want our farmers to suffer," he said. Shivakumar also mentioned that he made three unsuccessful attempts to discuss the balancing reservoir at Navile with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. 'I even sent a team to hold talks, but they did not respond. I do not know why the Chief Minister did not give time, perhaps because more water is going to them," he remarked. He pointed out that the dam's capacity has reduced to 105 TMC due to silt, and a detailed plan to build the balancing reservoir, costing Rs 11,000 crore, was submitted to the Tungabhadra Board on November 22, 2024. 'There has been no response despite letters and discussions. I wrote to the Chief Ministers of both states on February 14, 2025, and also spoke to the concerned ministers," he said. Separately, a survey of all dams in Karnataka has been conducted due to technical concerns that arose at the Kabini dam. Shivakumar said, 'The life of a crest gate is about 50 years, so we are focusing on safety." Recalling last year's incident when the 19th gate broke off, he said, 'A replacement stop gate was installed within a week and disaster was averted. Many, including opposition leaders, criticised us. I accepted the criticism happily because criticism dies, but work remains." The Bajal Committee recommended immediate replacement of all gates, and Shivakumar said the government has acted accordingly. 'The process will take at least eight months," he said. The Tungabhadra project began in 1945 and water flow to canals started in 1953. Karnataka's share is 138.99 TMC, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together get 73 TMC. Irrigation benefits cover 9.26 lakh hectares, including 3.75 lakh hectares in Koppal, Raichur, Ballari and Vijayanagara districts, Shivakumar said. Imran Khan nominates opposition leaders for National Assembly, Senate

Last Updated: Islamabad, Aug 20 (PTI) Pakistan's incarcerated former premier Imran Khan has nominated ethnic Pashtun politician Mahmood Khan Achakzai as opposition leader in the National Assembly and Azam Khan Swati as leader of the opposition in the Senate. The key positions held by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Omar Ayub Khan and Shibli Faraz fell vacant following their conviction late last month in a case related to the May 9, 2023 violence. Khan, 72, is booked in several cases in Lahore in connection with the May 9 violence, including for allegedly inciting his supporters to attack government and military buildings. PTI secretary general Salman Akram Raja told reporters outside the Supreme Court about the nomination of Achakzai and Swati. 'These two have been nominated by Khan," he said. He also said that Khan asked for five names to decide the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, after Ahmad Khan Bhachar was convicted last month in a case related to the May 9 violence. Achakzai is chief of his Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, which is part of opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), also headed by him. Khan also fielded him as presidential candidate of his party against the incumbent Asif Ali Zardari last year. Unlike Achakzai, the nominee for the position of the leader of the opposition in the Senate, Swati, is a senior PTI politician who is considered close to Khan. Khan, who was ousted from office in April 2022, has been in the high-security Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, since August 2023 after being convicted in a corruption case. He faces multiple legal cases, most of them filed after his removal from power. PTI SH GSP GSP view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Pak extends airspace ban for Indian aircraft till September 23

Agency: Lahore, Aug 20 (PTI) Pakistan authorities on Wednesday extended its airspace ban for Indian aircraft till September 23. The Pakistan Airports Authority has issued a fresh NOTAM (notice to airmen) announcing the one-month extension of the restriction on Indian aircraft in Pakistan's airspace. 'All aircraft operated by Indian airlines will not be allowed to use Pakistani airspace. The ban also remains in place for military and civilian aircraft that are Indian-owned or leased," the authority said. The ban was initially imposed on April 23 for one month in the wake of tension between the two countries following the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The move barred Indian carriers and aircraft from flying over Pakistani territory. Days later, on April 30, India responded with a reciprocal airspace closure for Pakistani aircraft and airlines. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 22:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
