Wheeler Dealers' Mike Brewer says cars are getting 'harder to fix' as one is 'almost impossible' to repair

Daily Mirror30-07-2025
Mike Brewer, who is best known for hosting Wheeler Dealers, has slammed modern cars and says they are becoming increasingly difficult to repair as he names one vehicle that is 'almost impossible' to fix
Wheeler Dealers favourite Mike Brewer has singled out one motor that is "almost impossible to fix" whilst taking aim at today's vehicles. The telly star has built his reputation by snapping up second-hand cars and restoring them for profit.

Yet Mike reckons contemporary motors are becoming increasingly tricky to mend. He claims the troubling trend kicked off with the Audi A2, where drivers were unable to lift the bonnet, being limited to just a "service hatch" instead.

Mike reckons we're now stuck in a "disposable society" and suggests drivers are more likely to trade in their motor rather than keep it running, reports the Express. He argues people no longer show their cars the "respect" they once did.

On the Talkin' Shop podcast, he said: "Back in my day or your dad's day, when you bought your new car, or your nearly new used car, you would wash it every weekend, you would, every three months, change the oil, change the filter, and hoover it out, and clean it.
"We sell cars at One Automotive that are six months old, one year old, and they might come back six months later and it's never seen a car wash. Never had an oil filter, never had the screenwashed."

However, Mike reckons manufacturers have deliberately made it tougher to service vehicles. He explained: "I think Audi started it with the A2 when they made that car deliberately with no bonnet.
"All you could do was put water in it at the front for your screenwash. It was almost impossible to service the car yourself and then other manufacturers followed suit."
Mike claims that many modern vehicles have become a "sea of plastic coverings" beneath the bonnet. He continued: "The manufacturers are saying, 'Don't touch it, leave it alone, bring it back to us and we'll charge you' or 'Don't touch it and wait for it to die'."

The television specialist maintains that motors can "go on forever" if they are "looked after right". He referenced lorries which routinely clock up higher mileage as proof of longevity.
Mike revealed that vintage automobiles can frequently outlast their modern counterparts when restored with contemporary components.

He elaborated: "Today we have different gasket compounds, we have different water compounds, we have different rubber and viscosity in rubber, so the chances are, if you're restoring a car today, the chances are it will run much better and much longer and last forever than it would have done when it came out of the factory."
The automotive authority launched his broadcasting journey on Channel 4's Driven - created to compete with BBC Top Gear - before transferring to the Discovery Channel with Wheeler Dealers.
He presented 18 series of the programme. Mike has also presented programmes including Wrecks to Riches and Auto Trader.
He currently presents the British Rally Championship on Sky Sports.

Volkswagen to axe another long-running combustion car from its range as it puts its foot down on EV transition

German car giant Volkswagen will axe another evergreen combustion engine model from its range next year as it continues to accelerate towards its all-electric future. The brand is reportedly planning to announce that it will wield the axe on a vehicle it has been selling for the best part of 25 years - and had once proved immensely popular with large families. Insiders at the Wolfsburg manufacturer have told Autocar that production of the Touareg SUV will end in 2026. Having first launched in 2002, VW has shifted more than 1.1 million worldwide across three generations. Since the Phaeton luxury saloon was terminated in 2016, Touareg has been VW's most prestigious nameplate and the pinnacle of its petrol and diesel-engined line-up. However, sales have tumbled to around 1,100 units per annum in recent years as rivals from Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche have dominated the large executive SUV market. When its departure is confirmed for 2026, the new Tayron will become VW's largest SUV model in the UK. It will also be the biggest combustion engine car it sells. Touareg was originally developed at the turn of the century alongside the Porsche Cayenne - the German sports car company's (which is also owned by VW Group) first foray into the SUV segment, with the pair launching in 2002. They have since continued to share platforms, though Cayenne has gone on to be a higher volume seller thanks to its badge appeal. The move to kill it off next year - once confirmed - will mean that Volkswagen will no longer occupies the most executive SUV class, which in recent times has welcomed major players of the likes of Bentley (Bentayga), Ferrari (Purosangue), Lamborghini (Urus) and Maserati (Levante). With more competition - and premium German rivals extending their offerings in this market - the Touareg has become a very unpopular option. With no direct successor planned, its demise will close the book on a 24-year availability of what bosses once dubbed the brand's 'true flagship model'. According to a Volkswagen statement given in 2023 - when the Touareg was last facelifted - more than 1.13 million have been sold worldwide. Some 58,200 of these have been delivered to customers in the UK. Since the first-generation car's arrival, it has survived on a shared platform with the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 While it might have become less popular in recent years, it has proved itself durable... with some extreme evidence to hand showing just how well built the Touareg truly is. In December 2023, a Russian driver had a miraculous escape after his Touareg plunged 40ft from a multi-storey car park. He was driving the SUV when it smashed through a flimsy barrier and fell to the road below. Incredibly, Evgeny Shamko, 40 (at the time of the event), suffered no injuries from the almighty fall, according to reports. The report come months after Volkswagen pulled the Arteon Shooting Brake estate from its combustion-engine line-up - having dropped the conventional Arteon saloon back in 2023. And while it debuted a new Passat last year, it will be sold in the UK exclusively as an estate, with the four-door version scrapped from showrooms, leaving the electric ID.7 as the company's standalone saloon car. While Touareg's exit stage left is part of VW's range transition to EVs, even some of its battery cars are being culled. As well as reports of the Touareg bowing out, the ID.5 electric SUV is also expected to retire in a matter of months. Having only launched in 2021, the sportier - coupe-inspired - variant of the ID.4 is being hung out to dry in 2027, having registered disappointing sales. It was primarily targeted at the Chinese market, however a boom in new domestic brands at a lower price point saw demand flop. Since the Phaeton luxury saloon was terminated in 2016, Touareg has been VW's most prestigious nameplate and the pinnacle of its petrol and diesel-engined line-up. But it too soon will be no longer available in Volkswagen showrooms Sales in Europe have been lacklustre too - and VW didn't even bother offering it to US customers. The ID.5 platform is also the basis of the contentious Ford Capri, which launched last year. Volkswagen's EV priorities are now expected to shift towards smaller models, with a Polo-size ID.2 expected next year, and a smaller ID.1 a real possibility for 12 months later. VW has also recently confirmed its iconic hot hatch badge will live on in an EV world. CEO Thomas Schafer in May revealing the GTI performance range remains part of the German giant's plans.

When you can park on double yellow lines without getting a fine

There are two situations where motorists can stop on double yellow lines legally Drivers may not be aware that there are two specific circumstances where pulling up on double yellow lines shouldn't be a problem. These exemptions allow motorists to stop or park on double yellow lines as long as they're not causing a blockage or hindering traffic movement. ‌ The first exception applies to blue badge holders, as reported by the Express. Official guidance states that badge holders "may park on single or double yellow lines for up to 3 hours, but in general not where there are restrictions on loading or unloading indicated by yellow kerb dashes and/or signs on plates". ‌ It adds: "You may wish to check whether a particular local council has chosen to exempt Blue Badge holders from this restriction." Nevertheless, drivers must bear in mind that the guidance also makes clear: "You are not entitled to park on yellow lines in off-street car parks." ‌ There are also rules regarding correct blue badge display when parking on these lines, with advice reading: "You must display the Blue Badge and the blue parking clock showing the quarter hour period during which you arrived. "You must wait for at least one hour after a previous period of parking before you can park the same vehicle in the same road or part of a road on the same day." ‌ An additional exemption exists for loading and unloading vehicles. This activity can occasionally be carried out whilst parked on double yellow lines, though there are several considerations to bear in mind. According to the British Parking Association (BPA): "Single and double yellow lines control waiting. Even where waiting is prohibited, if you can do so safely you may set down and pick up passengers and may also stop to load or unload goods unless this is prohibited by short yellow kerb marks or 'blips'." Motorists should also look out for any displayed signs that might impose additional restrictions, such as specific timeframes for stopping or limited duration periods. For instance, Manchester city council advises "while you can load or unload for as long as it takes, your vehicle must be moved immediately after you have finished loading or unloading." Authorities have the power to issue fines for loading or unloading activities they consider "not reasonable". Remember, even with these exceptions in place, you could still be hit with a penalty charge notice (PCN) if you're causing an obstruction or hazard, so it's important to always park considerately.

A used car dealer who landed a £78,000 prize in an online draw has told the giveaway company he doesn't need the money. Owais Khan, from Burton-on-Trent, entered a 19p draw with BOTB, the online competition company known for giving away luxury cars and dream prizes. When the film crew turned up to surprise him with the keys to his new Audi RSQ8 super SUV, Owais was already one step ahead – he'd seen them setting up down the street. Owais now owns two luxury Audis | BOTB Rather than spring their usual on-camera surprise on him, presenter Christian Williams quickly discovered that Owais had been tipped off about their arrival and he had actually been watching the team setting up down the road. Disappointed that the big reveal had been spoiled, Christian led Owais down the road to his new car and, when he spotted a friend watching nearby, Owais shouted: "Where's yours? Do you want it? You can have it!" Owais revealed he's been entering BOTB competitions for a long time, and when given the option to choose between the car or a cash alternative, he turned to his brother-in-law for advice. 'Take the car,' he replied. 'You don't need the cash anyway.' The RS6 is one of Audi's most prestigious cars | BOTB Both the Audi RS6 and Owais's new RSQ8 share similar drivetrains, with thunderous V8 engines, and they have similarly luxurious interiors. While Owais's windfall was apparently not going to be life-changing, BOTB does give away life-changing prizes on a regular basis, and the latest line-up includes a £55,000 Range Rover, with tickets priced at just six pence. There's also a chance to win an £880,000 house in Suffolk for just 99p. To see a full list of prizes and competitions, click here.
