Global medical community fears for safety of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya
released a report concerning medical professionals from around the globe expressing deep concern for Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, who was taken into custody by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) during a raid on Dec. 27, 2024.
Since his detention, there have been no updates regarding his safety or well-being, raising fears that he may suffer a fate similar to Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh, an orthopedic surgeon who died in IOF custody in April after being arrested during a military operation in the Jabalya refugee camp.
Abu Safiya's arrest has ignited widespread outrage among healthcare workers, who view it as part of a systematic targeting of medical professionals in Gaza.
Dr. Semia Sadfi Charbonnier, a general practitioner in Geneva and a member of the International Healthcare Workers Coalition, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "We're very, very afraid of that," referring to reports of torture in IOF detention.
She added, "Because Dr. Abu Safiya is like a symbol of resistance, and Israel doesn't like that. They want to cut the head of all resistance of the Palestinian people."
Charbonnier described Abu Safiya as a highly respected figure, saying, "For us, Dr. Hussam is more than a doctor. He's a hero." She called for stronger international pressure on "Israel", insisting that mere resolutions are insufficient and highlighting the need to end the impunity surrounding such actions.
Sara Galli, an anesthesiologist in the Netherlands and spokesperson for Doctors for Gaza, echoed these sentiments, raising alarms about the treatment of healthcare workers in Gaza. She pointed to documented instances of abuse, torture, and deaths under Israeli Occupation detention, emphasizing that the broader context of human rights violations cannot be overlooked.
Galli cited high-profile cases of detained medical professionals, including a hospital director held for eight months without evidence and a pediatrician who suffered severe weight loss due to starvation.
"We have had multiple accounts of abuse and torture, both to medical personnel and regular Palestinian detainees," Galli stated, adding that these allegations have been substantiated by credible international organizations like Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International.
She criticized the lack of concrete evidence supporting accusations against Palestinian healthcare workers, arguing, "There have been a lot of accusations, but there's not been any proof."
Dr. Huseyin Durmaz, a family physician in Gaziantep, Turkiye, characterized the detention of Abu Safiya as "an unprecedented event in the world."
He lamented the potential torture and lack of communication surrounding Abu Safiya's case, declaring, "We will not stop until Dr. Abu Safiya and all detained healthcare workers are released, returned to their duties, and those responsible are held accountable."

Three Palestinian paramedics killed by 'Israeli' tank shell while on duty
Three Palestinian paramedics were killed by an 'Israeli' tank shell as they attempted to evacuate wounded individuals from a home in Gaza City, the Gaza Interior Ministry's Medical Services Directorate announced Tuesday. In a statement, the directorate mourned the three members of its Ambulance and Emergency department, saying they "were killed by Israeli occupation fire while performing their humanitarian duty." The attack occurred Monday night in the Tuffah neighborhood, northeast of Gaza City. The paramedics were attempting to reach several injured people inside a house that had been targeted by 'Israeli' forces when they were struck. The statement added that the three were killed instantly by a "direct hit from an Israeli tank shell." According to the directorate, another ambulance crew that attempted to reach the scene to retrieve the bodies came under fire from 'Israeli' military vehicles and drones, preventing their access. "After strenuous efforts, our crews were able to retrieve the martyrs from the targeted location this morning, several hours after the incident occurred," the statement continued. The Medical Services Directorate has called on the international community and all relevant institutions to open an "urgent international investigation into this Israeli crime." It also pleaded for "the provision of protection for medical teams and to work to prevent the occupation's repeated targeting of them during the course of their duties." The directorate affirmed it would continue its humanitarian mission despite the significant risks. In a separate statement on Tuesday, Hamas condemned the attack, calling the targeting of the ambulance crew "a compound war crime, added to the black record of the Zionist occupation." "Targeting those who rescue the victims represents an unprecedented level of brutality and criminality, and reveals the occupation's endeavor to choke all tools of survival and rescue in Gaza," the Hamas statement read.

'Israeli' drones strike Aqsa Hospital for 11th time, causing major damage
In a fresh attack on Gaza's collapsing healthcare system, 'Israeli' drones bombed the roof of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza on Wednesday, causing significant structural damage, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza. This marks the 11th strike on the same hospital since the beginning of the war, highlighting what officials call a systematic campaign to destroy the strip's medical infrastructure. No casualties were immediately reported. In a statement, the office described the attack as a blatant violation of international law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, which mandate protection of medical facilities and personnel during armed conflict. Three drones were reportedly used in the latest strike, triggering panic among patients and medical staff. Previous attacks on the hospital occurred at various points from January 2024 to April 2025. The media office held Israeli Occupation, along with the United States and other supporting countries, fully responsible for what it called war crimes and acts of genocide. It urged the UN and international human rights organizations to act swiftly to protect Gaza's remaining hospitals and humanitarian workers.
