
Experts urge child-centered policies to spur Africa's inclusive education
The call came during a high-level continental event, which was organized by the African Union (AU) on Monday under the theme of "Equity at the Heart of the AU Decade of Education," in connection with the celebration of this year's edition of the Day of the African Child that falls on June 16 each year.
Highlighting that the African continent continues to face "stark inequities" in education access, participation, and learning outcomes, the meeting underscored the need to exert concerted efforts in augmenting the participation of under-represented children, especially children with disabilities, girls, children in conflict-affected areas, and those from marginalized communities.
Madougou Saidou, director of education, science, technology and innovation at the AU Commission, called for continental actions toward the realization of the major aspirations of the AU's Decade of Education for Africa (2024-2034), including a more coordinated and streamlined "political will, strategic investment, and data-driven policy to transform educational trajectories in Africa."
The high-level webinar, among other things, highlighted the progress made by selected African countries in helping children enroll in school, as well as recent regional commitments to expanding access to quality education.
Zhang Yanhong, head of foresight and innovation at the Institute for Statistics of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, urged African countries to emulate the successful experiences of countries with best practices in aligning their financing and policy priorities.
He called for robust efforts at both national and continental levels to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Serving as an important platform for African policymakers and experts to share experiences, the continental gathering also catalyzed regional dialogue and partnership to accelerate efforts toward setting and reaching national benchmarks in the education field.

Silent protest in Cape Town condemns starvation, genocide in Gaza
CAPE TOWN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- A group of women under the banner of Mothers4Gaza held a silent protest on Saturday in Cape Town, South Africa's legislative capital, to denounce what they described as state-sanctioned starvation and genocide in Gaza. With their mouths taped shut, the women stood in Sea Point holding placards that collectively spelled out "STOP GENOCIDE." Irene Knight, a Mothers4Gaza member, said they wanted to stand in solidarity with the mothers and children in Palestine. "There's been so much devastation in Palestine. There have been bombings and starvation -- all brought about by the Israeli regime," said Knight. "But there doesn't seem to be an urgency in the world to stop it, and we came here to protest that." Knight urged Western governments to halt funding and arming Israel. "Governments and institutions that have remained silent and complicit need to act. This genocide must end. Israel must be stopped from annihilating Palestine," she said. Greer Blizzard, another Mothers4Gaza member, drew parallels between the situation in Gaza and South Africa's own history, saying that Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have endured decades of systemic apartheid, and it is time for the world to bring it to an end. Gaza-based health authorities said earlier that a total of 154 people, including 89 children, have died from starvation and malnutrition. The United Nations Children's Fund reported that nearly all of Gaza's 1.2 million children are in need of mental health and psychosocial support, suffering from depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

DR Congo, Rwanda hold first talks after peace deal

(AP pic) NAIROBI : The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have held their first talks after signing a peace deal to end decades of deadly conflict in mineral-rich eastern Congo, the two African countries said today. Eastern DRC, a region bordering Rwanda with abundant natural resources, has been plagued by violence for more than three decades and the unrest has claimed thousands of lives. Yesterday, 'representatives from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda (Rwanda), along with observers' held their first meeting in Washington since signing a peace deal in the US capital on June 27, according to a joint statement released by both nations on social media today. The agreement was hailed as a significant milestone by the African Union and the United Nations and follows a long series of truces and ceasefires that have been systematically broken. The deal outlines provisions for the 'respect for territorial integrity and halting hostilities' in eastern DRC, which are still however to be implemented. It also includes economic measures but has few details. Violence intensified at the beginning of the year in the DRC's volatile east with the capture of the major city of Goma by the M23 armed group and Rwandan troops in January, followed by Bukavu in February. According to the Congolese government and the UN, the violence has left thousands dead and exacerbated a humanitarian crisis for hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Since February, the front has stabilised. But violence continued between the M23 and a motley group of pro-Kinshasa militias engaged in guerrilla warfare. The Rwandan-backed M23 armed group and Kinshasa also signed a declaration of principles in Qatar earlier this month, including a commitment to a permanent ceasefire. Rwanda denies providing military support to the M23 but says its security has long been threatened by armed groups, including the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), established by ethnic Hutus linked to the massacres of Tutsis in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The DRC is the world's leading producer of cobalt and has deposits of gold and other valuable minerals including coltan, a metallic ore that is vital in making phones and laptops.

Trump administration suspends UCLA's research funding over antisemitism claims
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Trump administration is suspending federal research funding to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), one of the top public universities in the United States, over claims of "antisemitism and bias," according to the university's chancellor. "UCLA received a notice that the federal government, through its control of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other agencies, is suspending certain research funding to UCLA," the university's chancellor, Julio Frenk, said in a statement Thursday. "This is not only a loss to the researchers who rely on critical grants. It is a loss for Americans across the nation whose work, health, and future depend on the groundbreaking work we do," noted the statement. Frenk pointed out that "hundreds of grants may be lost, adversely affecting the lives and life-changing work of UCLA researchers, faculty and staff" through Washington's decision. Roughly 300 grants amounting to nearly 200 million U.S. dollars were suspended, the Los Angeles Times reported. "In its notice to us, the federal government claims antisemitism and bias as the reasons. This far-reaching penalty of defunding life-saving research does nothing to address any alleged discrimination," the chancellor added. Frenk said that the university "has taken robust actions to make our campus a safe and welcoming environment for all students." The suspension comes after a U.S. Department of Justice civil rights investigation that alleged UCLA had been "deliberately indifferent" to widespread harassment of Jewish and Israeli students during 2024 pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses. Earlier this week, the university agreed to pay 6.45 million dollars to settle a lawsuit over treatment of Jewish students and a professor during the protests. UCLA became the latest top university in the country being targeted by the federal government over claims that it has not taken enough actions to combat antisemitism on campus. Last week, Columbia University announced that it agreed to pay over 200 million dollars to the federal government to restore federal funding after it was investigated over campus antisemitism. Another Ivy League school, Brown University, agreed Wednesday to a 50-million-dollar deal with the Trump administration after facing probes over the treatment of Jewish students on campus and the consideration of race in its admissions. In March, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights sent letters to 60 universities, including Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia and Stanford University, regarding investigations into alleged antisemitic discrimination and harassment on their campuses.
