Dive Into Austin's Hottest Pool Bars at Cabana Club and Swim Club
For years, Austinites seeking respite from the city's sweltering summer turned to public pools like the historic Deep Eddy and Barton Springs municipal pools — or, crossed their fingers for a friend with a backyard oasis. Times have changed, however. The city has recently embraced a newer, buzzier trend: public-facing swanky hotel pools that mix cocktails, DJs, and summer vibes. In the fall of 2024, Austin saw the emergence of two new pool bars that further expanded these options.
Reminiscent of a luxurious hotel pool but without the actual lodgings, Cabana Club offers a multi-use space featuring a clubhouse, pergola, and pool deck. Guests can enjoy cocktails, coffee, food, and beer in a community hub designed for all-day use. A ginormous LED screen makes for spirited sports watching.
'We created Cabana Club to be a place for anyone, anytime, any reason,' co-owner Scott Withers said in a statement. 'Guests can start the day with a cold brew and their laptop, and end with a dip in the pool and an ice-cold beverage — all in one spot.'
Swim Club, on the other hand, is a hotel pool. Located at the Downright Austin (a renovated Sheraton), the space transforms a 1980s pool into a colorful restaurant and bar that doubles as an Instagram-worthy playground. Diners can eat at the bottom of the former pool, which now has a window offering an underwater view into the current outdoor pool. The menu leans Mediterranean, with fresh dips and plenty of vegetables. For a livelier atmosphere, the bar features a vibey lounge area built for dancing. Outside, the actual pool beckons swimmers, complete with pink floaties.
'While Austin has many great bars and restaurants, we wanted to create something more — a social club where people would love to hang out and return often,' says Ryan Hollowell, Downright's manager of private events and sales. 'The open layout enhances the social vibe, making it easy for guests to mingle, relax by the pool, and enjoy the lively, playful energy.'
Fortunate for Austin, the poolside experience has gotten hotter and more versatile thanks to the Cabana Club and Swim Club. Eater Austin stopped into both spots to check out the scene, and, of course, the pools. Here's what to expect. Cabana Club: An All-Day Oasis
Co-owned by some of the team behind Progress Coffee + Beer, this Govalle spot in East Austin aims to cater to both the work-from-home crowd and hotspot hoppers to unwind. By day, the Cabana Club is a serene oasis offering various caffeine options and strong WiFi with plenty of cozy indoor and outdoor spaces; by night, the space transforms into a vibrant party with live DJs and weekly events. Bonus: the heated pool makes Cabana Club a rare year-round retreat.
Hours: 7 a.m. to midnight daily
How to Swim: Free pool access for guests 21 and older. Lounge chairs and umbrella seating are first-come, first-served, with cabanas and sunbeds available for rent.
Vibes: Relaxed and chill during the day, transitioning to lively evenings with events and DJs.
Drinks: Highly inventive cocktails, including the Desert Bloom, a bright, herbaceous mix of tequila, Italicus, aloe, and lime, and the Cafe Tropical, a coconut-vanilla spin on an espresso martini with cold brew and Licor 43, plus local beers on tap, robust margarita and martini menus, and rotating frozen beverages.
Food: Score breakfast and lunch from local food trucks, including La Yunta (tacos) and Asian Roll (sushi/Latin fusion). The onsite clubhouse restaurant, Grey's Kitchen, also serves sandwiches, salads, and smoothies. Order from the pool via QR codes.
Best for: Remote workers, sunbathers, and happy hour crowds. Go here for a versatile space for work or play, day or night. Swim Club: A Retro Pool Party Vibe
Led by local industry veteran Travis Tober of Nickel City, Downtown's Swim Club offers a food and cocktail menu inspired by the excess and escapist energy of the 1980s. While the opening menu relied heavily on fried fare, including wings and tacos, last year's revamp leans more Mediterranean, with flavorful dips, crudos, and pizza that pair well with the vibrant surroundings.
Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant closes earlier, but the bar keeps the party going until midnight.
How to Swim: Dining reservations include pool access, subject to availability and capacity. Lounge chairs are first-come, first-served. Pool passes are available on Resort Pass.
Vibes: Lively, high-energy, and bursting with personality. Bright and colorful. DJs spin tunes on Fridays and Saturdays, with seasonal parties also taking place. The space itself is an Instagram shoot waiting to happen. Expect a riot of bright pinks and blues, neon lighting, retro signage, and a poolside ball pit.
Drinks: Playful poolside cocktails that lean fruity and citrusy, like the Dusk 'Til Don with chamomile-infused lalo tequila, honeydew cordial, citrus blend, as well as several frozen options, including an Aperol slushie.
Food: Slightly Mediterranean-inspired menu with fresh starters, brick-oven pizzas (the zucchini and burrata veggie version is worthy of ordering), and several desserts, including a 'mega' banana split.
Best for: Foodies, social butterflies, and night owls. Go here for a fun, energetic space to socialize, eat, swim, or dance.

Eternal Sunshine: Beautiful Books To Put You In A Summer Mood
Photography: Daria Reina; Courtesy of Passalacqua For all the talk of AI killing creativity, there's no curbing the appetite for print—especially for design-led coffee table books. Informative and inspiring, these gorgeous tomes whisk us off to new worlds through stunning photography and immersive stories. Whether or not you're off to somewhere nice this summer, these books dedicated to the enviable Mediterranean lifestyle bring that feeling of long, lazy days and warm sunshine right to your shelf. Here are some worth reading and adding to your collection. In just three years since opening, Passalacqua is already etched in the history books as the first property to top the inaugural World's 50 Best Hotels list in 2023. Built on land originally owned by Pope Innocent XI and set in the former home of composer Vincenzo Bellini, this 24-key boutique hotel isn't short of stories to tell. The De Santis family embarked on a top-to-toe transformation that features the work of local artisans and heritage makers so much so the hotel has become a living, breathing example of la dolce vita. The real magic of this 18th century villa lies largely in its storied location in Lake Como. Overlooking the majestic lake and surrounded by terraced gardens dotted with 15 water fountains, it's not surprising that Passalacqua is the most desired stay in Italy. Like the labor of love that is their hotel, the owners worked with Daria Reina and Andrea Ferolla on this beautiful book published by Assouline. Inside you'll find dreamy images, intimate stories and charming illustrations—a portal into Passalacqua and a wonderful ode to the grandeur of Lago di Como. Available exclusively on and Campania: Recipes & Wanderings Across Italy's Polychromatic Coast Courtesy of Belmond and Apartamento Due to the sheer number of food books published, they can sometimes look—and feel—the same. That can't be said for this particular Campania, which is chock-full of color, character and artistic photography. Following Liguria and Penang , this book is the third installation in Belmond and Apartamento's Recipes & Wanderings series—an exploration of food and travel around the globe. The focus is on Campania, a region described as Italy's culinary heartland, certainly high praise in a country that is incredibly serious about its food. Turn the pages and it reveals an eclectic mix of photographs by Lea Colombo, stories on local producers that craft delicious ingredients like mozzarella di bufala and Amalfi lemons, as well as essays from Elisa Carassai, Claudia Durastanti, and Margo Schachter. When you get hungry, which is inevitable, the cookbook features 21 classic dishes to replicate at home. These time-honored recipes are taken from the kitchens of Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, as well as shared by the likes of Salvatore Giuliano, part of the family behind Mimì alla Ferrovia, a historic Napolitan restaurant established by his grandfather in 1943. If you enjoy a glass (or two) of vino when you travel, this new addition to Assouline's Wine & Travel series is up your alley. Penned by renowned sommelier Enrico Bernardo, Wine & Travel Mediterranean Islands traverses the region's mythical places where wine, culture and nature meet. Through beautiful photography (including some retro shots by Slim Aarons), the book takes readers to the volcanic vineyards of Sicily, the airy corners of Corsica, as well as the hidden enclaves of Majorca. Bernardo shares his expert and personal insight into the wine hotspots in the Mediterranean, offering a closer look not only on the terroir, but also the traditions and the people that shape the wine. Of course, it's also serves as a guide to the wines one must try (and take home), which include Assyrtiko from Greece, Cannonau from Sardinia and more. Big pop star is moving to Miami, and he just bought a ‘Housewives' house
Talk about your big time celebrity real estate transactions. 'Real Housewives of Miami' alum Nicole Martin and her attorney fiancé Anthony Lopez just sold their Coral Gables megamansion to pop star Robbie Williams. Price tag: a cool $40 million. Dennis Carvajal with ONE Sotheby's International Realty represented the local power couple, while the British singer was repped by Chad Carroll at Compass, the Miami Herald was told. According to the description on the 19,380-square-foot, seven bedroom, eight bathroom waterfront estate sits on a one-acre peninsula in the exclusive gated enclave of Old Cutler Bay. Lopez and Martin, parents of two, purchased the property, built in 2016, in 2022 for $21.5 million, then gave it a major glow-up, as seen in a few episodes of the Bravo hit. The sprawling, so-called smart home is 'designed for both everyday living and grand entertaining,' with such amenities as a movie theater, wine cellar, gym, massage room/spa, resort style pool, 18-car garage, a dock, plus views for days. As huge as this Mediterranean-style compound is, Bravo reports that Williams has plans to add even more square footage and build a recording studio on site. It's unclear why Martin and Lopez wanted to unload the palatial abode, which came fully furnished, as part of Williams' off-market deal. The anesthesiologist left 'RHOM' last year amid struggles with her mental health, but recently made a guest appearance on the show. She and Lopez also have a stunning retreat in Aspen, Colorado. As for Williams, it's also unclear why the former Take That band member wanted to move to South Florida, besides the obvious reasons. The 'Angels' hitmaker recently sold his Beverly Hills mansion to Drake for $75 million. The music star is married to California native/ 'X Factor' judge Ayda Field and they have four school age kids. Let's give the whole family a warm Miami welcome.
