'Very frustrating for Newcastle and Howe so far'

BBC News9 hours ago

Our chief football writer Phil McNulty has been taking your questions.Ken asked: Why do we (Newcastle United) seem to be struggling to get deals done? Eddie Howe said he wanted business done early but we haven't been able to attract our top targets. It's a little bit of a worry.McNulty replied: It has been frustrating as I was at Newcastle on the last day of the season when Eddie Howe said it was imperative business was done quickly. But this has not happened. It is not as if they have not been trying, but they have been unable to agree deals and now it looks like Joao Pedro, a prime target, is off to Chelsea.I think this was always a fear behind the scenes at Newcastle, with the attraction of London and extending the ex-Brighton clan of Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez.Still plenty of time to bring in new faces – but there is no escaping the fact it has all been very frustrating for Newcastle and Howe so far.

Prince William helps stranded football team struggling with access to their club by fixing pothole-ridden lane

PRINCE William has paved the way for a stranded local football team by getting its potholes fixed. Work began to repair an access road to Mousehole AFC on Monday, which also serves a campsite and neighbouring Paul Cricket Club, in Cornwall. 2 For years the club has complained about its narrow pothole-ridden lane which has caused congestion and damage to cars. But when Prince William, 43, discovered the pothole crisis he drafted in help to repair the road - which will be fixed in time for next season's games. The project was revealed in the annual report by William 's Duchy of Cornwall. Simon Taylor, Project Lead for Mousehole AFC, said: "Within a week, I was in a Teams meeting with Martin Riley, who'd been invited by HRH to see what could be done to help fix the existing road. "Two weeks later, Martin visited the club. After experiencing the lane for himself, he quickly realised a full repair wasn't viable. "With planning permission already secured for an alternative access point, we turned our attention to the possibility of building a brand-new road. "Countless meetings, both on-site and virtual, later, we've pulled together an incredible consortium of local and national companies who've committed their time, resources, and expertise to bring this dream to life." The construction is being carried out at no cost to the club thanks to donations from a string of firms including private companies including Tarmac. The Prince of Wales said: "I have seen time and time again that community hubs are essential in providing the spaces for people to come together, to build stronger communities and to allow people to thrive. "It is a privilege to be able to help the local community access Mousehole AFC. I'd like to personally add my thanks for all the hard work that's gone into making it happen. "I look forward to seeing the new road for myself as soon as I can." The project will also include a new football car park. The football club and land is not part of Duchy of Cornwall property, which has 52,173 hectares in 19 counties including Cornwall. Simon Taylor added: 'This project is transformative not just for Mousehole AFC but for the entire area. "The cricket club will also benefit from the new road, and we'll now be able to host more events at Interiora Trungle Parc, turning it into a true community hub. "Most importantly, it will take matchday and holiday traffic out of the village, improving the experience for everyone. "I'm incredibly grateful to our consortium, there are too many individuals to name, but their support has been extraordinary. "Special thanks go to Martin Riley for his dedication and guidance, GRS Group CEO Jon Fisher - without whose project leadership we could not have moved forward - and of course to HRH The Prince of Wales, whose involvement made this possible.' Jon Fisher, Chief Executive of GRS Group, which is leading the works, said: "This project is a powerful example of the difference we can make when we bring together our national capability and expertise. "It reflects what GRS is all about, building infrastructure that improves lives and connects communities, and it's one of many grassroots initiatives we're proud to support nationwide. "Improving this access road will benefit the wider community around Mousehole, and it's something we're very proud to be involved with." The new road is expected to be completed in time for the start of Mousehole AFC's 2025/26 season in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South this August. Other firms who along with Tarmac helped pave the way for Wills include civil engineering firms ISC and Griffiths, Cornish companies Maen Karne and Cormac, along with Holcim Aggregate Industries, highway maintenance company Colas and national civil and drainage suppliers Keyline. Local landowner Paul Pond and campaigner Vice Chair Deryk Heywood have also been hailed for the work.

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka perform TikTok dance routine on Wimbledon's Centre Court as top seeds show there are no hard feelings after fall-out from French Open final

There was no sign of any lingering tension between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka as the two top seeds danced together on Wimbledon 's Centre Court in a light-hearted TikTok routine ahead of this year's Championships. Three weeks after Gauff beat Sabalenka in the French Open final, the pair took to the hallowed grass on Friday for a relaxed practice session that ended with them grooving to C+C Music Factory's Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now). Sabalenka, the No 1 seed in the women's singles at SW19, posted the clip to Instagram, writing: 'TikTok dances always had a way of bringing people together.' Gauff, who is seeded second, also shared a video of the pair lip-syncing outside Centre Court, captioning it: 'OK guys, we're back. Did you miss us? Cause we missed you.' She added a message to fans to confirm the hatchet had been buried, stating: 'The olive branch was extended and accepted! We're good so you guys should be too.' Their playful display comes after a frostier exchange following the Roland Garros final on June 7, when Sabalenka was criticised for saying Gauff won 'not because she played incredible; just because I made all of those mistakes from… easy balls.' Gauff responded at the time by saying she didn't feel the remarks were fair, noting: 'The way Aryna was playing the last few weeks, she was the favourite to win… I think I got the hardest matchup just if you go off stats alone.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aryna Sabalenka (@arynasabalenka) Sabalenka later admitted her post-match comments were 'unprofessional' and revealed she had reached out to apologise privately. 'I absolutely regret what I said back then. We all make mistakes. I'm just a human being who's still learning in life,' she said. 'I think we all have those days when we lose control. The difference with me is the world is watching.' Any doubt over the state of their relationship appears to have been erased, with the TikTok videos showing smiles, laughter and synchronised dance moves from two of the biggest stars in women's tennis. Sabalenka opened her Wimbledon campaign with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Canada's Carson Branstine on Court 1 on Monday. Gauff will begin her tournament on Tuesday on Centre Court against Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska. Due to their seedings, the earliest Gauff and Sabalenka can face each other at Wimbledon is in the final on July 12 — and Sabalenka has hinted that if she wins, she is ready to celebrate in style. 'If I win the title, of course I'm going to do the dance,' she told Mail Sport last week. 'But it would be more like a TikTok dance — the first one, we're going to create a new tradition!' Sabalenka, who has a tiger tattoo on her left forearm as a reminder to 'fight like a tiger', admitted she has had to learn to manage her fiery on-court persona, saying: 'When I first came on tour, everyone was teaching me to be quiet, not show your emotions… But I found it is much easier when I let those negative emotions go — scream at my team, let it out.' She added: 'Sometimes I go too much in these negative emotions, which is also not right. So we have to balance it.' The Belarusian star has unfinished business at Wimbledon, having reached the semi-finals in 2021 and 2023. She withdraw from last year's tournament due to an shoulder injury, having also missed the 2022 Championships because of the ban on Russian and Belarusian players following the invasion of Ukraine. 'Now I'm here at Wimbledon I feel like I'm a different person. I'm super excited to compete — you appreciate that opportunity much more when it has been taken away,' she said.

India provide Jasprit Bumrah fitness update for second Test against England

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has revealed that star bowler Jasprit Bumrah is fit to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston this week, though coaches have not decided whether he will feature in Birmingham. Bumrah, who took five wickets across two innings in the first Test as India fell to defeat at Headingley, will likely only feature in three matches during the five-Test series, having suffered a back injury during the final match of India's 3-1 series defeat in Australia in January. The 31-year-old previously said he needs to 'take care of my body', telling Sky Sports before the series opener that he can likely only manage three matches at the moment, with India's coaching staff now evaluating how to get the best use out of their main bowling threat. And speaking to Sky, ten Doeschate said that Bumrah is 'available for the game' at Edgbaston, but that coaching staff have not yet 'made a call' as to whether he'll feature. 'Obviously we know from the start he's only going to play three out of the five [Tests], he's obviously had eight days to recover from the last Test,' said the Dutchman. 'Given conditions and workload, and how we think we can best manage the next four games, we haven't made a call on that. We're going to see where the other guys are with their workload as well. 'So technically, yes, he is available, but we haven't made a decision on whether he's going to play or not yet,' he added. When quizzed again regarding Bumrah, ten Doeschate reiterated that 'if we feel like there's value in playing him in this Test, we'll make that call at the very last minute'. 'But, you know, I'm talking about weather, how the pitch is going to play,' he said. 'Are we better of holding him back for Lord's and maybe Manchester or the Oval? It's all those factors, but, you know, you've seen him train yesterday, train a little bit today. It's not like he's not fit to play. 'It's just trying to fit those puzzle pieces to get the most out of him, out of what we know we do have from him,' he added. India have never won a Test at Edgbaston, and their latest attempt at victory in Birmingham will begin on Wednesday, 2 July at around 11am BST.
