Cloughie's notes, Hillman Imps and Bela Lugosi: my glorious trove of old Forest programmes

The Guardian14-06-2025
What to do with the pile of vintage Nottingham Forest programmes that came into my possession several years ago? At first, standard protocol was observed for uncategorised piles of paper. The 21 City Ground programmes, spanning 50 years from September 1963 to November 2012, were packed away in a dark cupboard, ignored and unread. But finally taking the time to study them has paid dividends: a rich seam of history leaps off the pages in clear, elegant black-and-white type.
Forest's presence in the top-flight's upper echelons evoked the club's halcyon days and plenty has been written about the Brian Clough-Peter Taylor era. Less attention has focused on Clough's often entertaining programme notes during his 18-year tenure – while the editions outside Clough's time are a fascinating way of charting Forest's trajectory, as well as how profoundly football and wider society have changed.
For West Ham's visit in September 1963, pre-decimalisation, the programme cover price is 6d (2.5p). 'Some of their players have established themselves in the International field,' reads the section on the visitors. 'Bobby Moore is holding the right-half berth for England … others with not so familiar names at the moment, but with the right sort of ability, include inside-forward Geoff Hurst.'
Prescient player profiles aside, the 60s adverts may be the most interesting element. 'If your party runs into hundreds ask for a special train,' reads a message from British Railways, encouraging football fans to charter their own services for away days. 'Commission paid on full train loads for a guaranteed number of passengers.' What chance of that now? The back page advertises the latest in cars: 'Meet the new Hillman Imp – an inspiration in light car design. Accelerates from 0-50 m.p.h. in 15.5 seconds.'
Onwards to 1972, on 23 September, the back page of 'Forest Review' is given over to Player's No 6: 'The most popular filter cigarette in Britain.' Edward Heath's Conservative government had reached an agreement with the tobacco industry the previous year and the message at the bottom – 'Every packet carries a government health warning' – was a recent, significant development.
Leading from the front, meanwhile, is an appeal from the chair, Ken Smales, urging supporters to buy a copy of the 1972 Nottingham Forest Annual. 'At only 15p it is certainly not a profit-making venture, but an honest effort by the club to inform the fan of some of our activities,' Smales writes. (Formerly a first-class cricketer for Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, Smales would give more than 35 years of service to Forest.)
On to 1979-80, the season of Forest's second European triumph, with the Clough era at its peak. The quality of the side facing Brighton on 17 November is certainly notable: Shilton, Anderson, Gray, McGovern, Lloyd, Needham, O'Neill, Bowles, Birtles, Francis, Robertson. The sole substitute is listed as 'To be announced', which the late Guardian writer Jeremy Alexander – who donated the programmes – has crossed out and replaced with 'Bowyer'. Despite their strength Forest were beaten 1-0 by the club Clough had left in 1974 for his brief spell at Leeds.
On Saturday 19 April – just before Forest defeated Hamburg at the Bernabéu for their second European Cup – they welcomed Derby: a Player of the Year voting slip is still tucked inside. Clough is pictured cheerily accepting a large bottle from the director of Bell's Whisky, his manager of the month prize for March.
Clough's fondness for drink becomes still more apparent. With Watford the visitors in September 1982, a 'friendly bet' between the manager and Scotland's John Robertson is relayed to readers. 'I bet I can do without a drink longer than you can do without a cigarette,' Clough told the winger. Hard to imagine a modern Premier League manager doing anything similar.
'I like the chairman [Elton John],' declares Clough for that meeting with Graham Taylor's Watford. 'Those people who thought his presence as a figure head was something of a gimmick have been made to eat their words.' There is also a profile of the winger Calvin Plummer (Dislikes: Smoking, traffic jams), who toured apartheid South Africa that same year.
'At Home With Viv Anderson' is the most engaging feature for the meeting with QPR in September 1983: the future Arsenal and Manchester United full-back is pictured enjoying a game of snooker on his new table. 'I must admit I enjoy having a table in the home,' Anderson said. 'Although the novelty has worn off a bit, it's a good way to relax.'
Towards the end of the decade Clough's irreverent style has developed further. 'Poor old Bella Lugosi [sic] would have turned in his grave if he had seen our performance against Arsenal here last season,' he writes in September 1989 for the Gunners' visit. 'For any thick bonses [sic] who don't know who Bella Lugosi was – he used to be a horror movie actor. And a good one at that!'
Moving through the 2000s the programmes become shinier and more colourful but considerably less attractive. With Forest struggling on and off the pitch, the calibre of players on display declines accordingly.
Poignantly, the final cover of the collection is a full-page picture of Nigel Doughty, published for the first home game after the Forest owner's death in 2012. A tribute from the chief executive, Mark Arthur, reveals that Doughty, a Labour supporter, had often feared it was morally wrong to plough cash into a football club when there are 'so many other worthwhile causes'.
With football ever-more fuelled by vast amounts of cash, Doughty's social conscience feels more needed today – and is harder to come by among the current crop of football club owners. It's also an example of the kind of historical perspective – along with the simple nostalgic thrill – brought by dusting off a pile of old matchday programmes.

Rangers collapse early against Club Brugge to leave Martin facing fans' wrath

Russell Martin's eighth match of a Rangers reign already riddled with doubts proved close to a living nightmare. Championship promotion races and playoffs, the ill winds of struggling in the Premier League have nothing on the fever-dream pressures of failing to turn around one of Glasgow's giants. Martin may be a believer in his own processes but in an environment where snap decisions are often sustained, he does not have long to set them in place. The chances of Rangers playing Champions League football rather than the Europa League are an outside chance after a first-half performance of rank ineptitude, the tone and probably the two-legged tie set by a horrible opening 20 minutes in which three soft goals were conceded. So early in his stewardship, Martin is still in the experimental phase and until a revival in the second half the experiment looked likely to be abandoned some time soon. Jayden Meghoma was making his debut at left-back, the Brentford loanee familiar to Martin from Southampton. James Tavernier, club captain, was benched, with another Premier League loanee, Max Aarons at right-back. Christos Tzolis, reportedly high on Crystal Palace's list should Eberechi Eze depart, and a scorer for Greece at Hampden Park in March, was earmarked as Brugge's danger man, veteran Hans Vanaken as the roving playmaker. They did not take long to hit their straps. Ibrox initially backed its team. With Europa League qualification banked, Rangers went at their task positively. Though briefly. In the third minute came one of those moments that scar Martin's reign so far. His managerial career, too. Danilo's shot at the Brugge goal was blocked and within seconds Rangers were a goal down, the ball bouncing to Tzolis, whose onward ball caught a dozing Nasser Djiga unawares, goalkeeper Jack Butland stranded. Romeo Vermant's lobbed finish was exquisite, even if granted the freedom of Govan. To compound disaster, Rangers' mess of a zonal defence allowed Jorne Spileers to stroke home Vermant's corner four minutes later, defenders stock-still. By the 20th minute, the tie felt all but decided, bar barracking for Rangers players and manager. Brandon Mechele celebrated his 500th Brugge appearance by seizing on a loose ball, drilling home, again unchallenged, sending fans barrelling for the exits. A grim, ugly exposure. Whatever Martin is attempting, such moments only cut down his chances of being given time. Never in 61 years of European football had Rangers fallen so far behind so quickly. Nicky Hayen, the Brugge coach, was at nearby Haverfordwest while Martin managed Championship Swansea in the 2021-22 season. In 2025, the gulf between their teams during that first 45 minutes was aching. The half-time reaction was rancorous but Rangers players returned with higher energy, and their lifeline arrived. Meghoma burst down the left, supplying Danilo for a close-range finish. That injected positivity into Ibrox, Brugge's defenders far less composed as Djeidi Gassama was the liveliest. At last, the attacking football Martin evangelises, though the back door remained open, Butland saved when Mechele was again unmarked from a corner. On the hour, Martin threw on Hamza Igamane and Thelo Aasgaard, with Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore soon arriving alongside Tavernier. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Brugge, mindful of their advantage, retreated into their shell, looking to the counter and Rangers' propensity for mistakes for their opportunities to attack. And inviting Rangers on, they seemed to have conceded again, Gassama forcing the ball home from close range only for him to be penalised for knocking the ball from veteran goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's grasp. It looked marginal, at best, and stopped the roof being raised but did at least suggest Rangers had improved from the abject gloom of the first half. Mignolet was certainly the busier goalkeeper as the end of the first leg beckoned. Rangers had only partially redeemed themselves but Martin, one of life's optimists, will take the positives from a marked improvement. The truth was it could hardly have been any worse. Better – far far better – must come in Belgium if Rangers are to have any hope in the second leg.

MAFS UK star left devastated after being 'dumped via text' following whirlwind romance

A MAFS UK star has been left devastated after being 'dumped via text' following a whirlwind romance. Personal trainer and mother-of-two Marilyse Corrigan was unlucky in love on the series in 2021 after marrying fellow fitness fanatic Franky Spencer. However she revealed in September last year that she was in a relationship with a new man. Unfortunately, things didn't work out for Marilyse with a source telling The Sun: 'Marilyse is really upset and can't believe she's ended up single again. 'She was dumped over text after falling head over heels. It was a whirlwind romance and in hindsight she feels she was love bombed.' Marilyse wed military man Franky on the series but they split just before the final episode aired. She later moved on with Matt Murray who also appeared on the Channel 4 show in 2022, but they split in March 2023. Marilyse later fuelled rumours that she had secretly rekindled her romance with Frankie in December 2023 when she shared a cosy photo with her former 'husband.' Fans flooded the comments section with their well wishes, with one adding: 'Awww hope it's not out of place but I always think you two should give it another go… you seem so good together, it's all in the vibes xx' The former couple split after their relationship 'went a bit dry' after 'spending too much time together'. During the show Marilyse had decided to stay with her Dubai -based husband, who had been dubbed 'controlling' by fans, after the programme ended in the couple's vow renewal. But speaking to The Sun after the show, the contestant revealed her relationship with Franky ended when it turned into more of a friendship. 'It's really sad as we got on really well and Franky has a heart of gold,' said Marilyse, explaining that it was a mutual decision to end their relationship. Adding that the experience was 'full-on', she admitted: 'I saw a lot of Franky and that probably spoiled it because we spent too much time together. She continued: 'Eventually things just went a bit dry and we ended up being more like friends than people in a relationship.' Following the show, Franky moved to Beverly, while he looked for a job in Leeds, amid planning his return to the UK from Dubai. Marilyse later sparked romance rumours with Matt in October 2022 when they jetted off to Turkey together. However, they both announced on social media in March they have decided to break up due to being 'too different' to one another. Marilyse told her Instagram followers: 'I've received multiple messages asking if Matt and I are still together. 'Out of respect to you guys and the support you've given us, of course it's only fair to be clear. So the answer to this is no we are no longer together anymore but I do wish Matt all the best for his future.'

What are the betting trends in the Premier League Outright Winner market following the weekend's fixtures? Sky Bet odds revealed

The first matchday of the 2025-26 Premier League season is now in the history books - with some blistering performances, major upsets and everything in between. Although one round of matches don't define a season - there has already been some movement in the betting lines with Sky Bet across a number of their outright markets. With that in mind - let's take a look at the betting trends in the Premier League Outright Winner market since the weekend's fixtures. Liverpool Liverpool remain the best-backed with Sky Bet to win consecutive Premier League titles - with Arne Slot's side priced at 7/4. The Reds went into a 2-0 lead against Bournemouth in the season opener at Anfield - with goals to newcomer Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo. However, while they looked fantastic going forward, it was their holes defensively that were of concern. The Cherries ultimately took advantage of Liverpool's inconsistency at the back to level it at 2-2, before a pair of goals to Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah in the dying stages helped the hosts secure a 4-2 victory. Arsenal Meanwhile, Arsenal are 15/8 second-favourites despite an unconvincing showing against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Gunners held on in enemy territory to win 1-0 - however - they found themselves on the back foot for much of the game. Star signing Viktor Gyokeres failed to impress in his debut for the north London club, with the Swede recording 21 touches and completing just four of nine passes. Additionally, the 26-year-old lost possession 11 times and failed to register a single shot on target. With so much made in the offseason of Arsenal's desperate need for a striker - is Gyokeres the right man to help the Gunners challenge for a title? We will have to wait to find out. Manchester City The most impressive showing of the top five league favourites was undoubtedly Manchester City - who cruised to a 4-0 victory against Wolves at Molineux Stadium. In what was a very promising sign for the Sky Blues - both their longstanding superstars and highly-touted signings made an impact. Erling Haaland scored a brace - which marked the Norwegian's fourth straight season in which he has found the back of the net on the Premier League's opening day. Meanwhile, new recruits Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki also got on the scoresheet. For those anticipating Pep Guardiola's side to prove too strong once again this season, they are 11/4 third-favourites to claim their fifth title in six seasons. Chelsea Chelsea kickstarted their campaign with a disappointing 0-0 draw at home against London rivals Crystal Palace. Despite boasting 72 percent of possession - Cole Palmer and Co only managed to register three shots on target. That's a far cry from the Chelsea side we saw in the Club World Cup final - who managed to thump Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 3-0. If you're of the belief that their performance on Sunday will be an anomaly in an otherwise fantastic season - the Blues are fourth in the market at 9/1 to be crowned champions. Manchester United Ruben Amorim's side have shortened from 33/1 to 25/1 with Sky Bet following an inspired outing against Arsenal. As mentioned earlier in the article - the Red Devils can take plenty of confidence from their 1-0 loss to the Gunners. Amorim will be particularly pleased with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo - who looked dangerous from start to finish in their Man United league debut. United return to action this Sunday - as they go head-to-head with Fulham away from home. Tottenham Hotspur Spurs have had no movement in the betting lines since the start of the season - with Thomas Frank's side still priced at 40/1. They secured the three points comfortably at home over the weekend - with a Richarlison brace and another goal to Brennan Johnson helping the north London club to a 3-0 victory. Despite such a dominant win - it shouldn't come as a surprise they haven't received much interest in the market given it came against a recently promoted side. Football fans will have a great opportunity this weekend to see how competitive Tottenham will be this season when they clash with Manchester City at the Etihad. Newcastle Of the top ten contenders - Newcastle have widened the most according to Sky Bet. The Magpies were as short as 28/1 a fortnight ago to win their first title of the Premier League era - however - they have blown out to 66/1. That's in large part thanks to the turmoil off the pitch - with their superstar striker Alexander Isak refusing to train or play with the squad. Isak has made it known that he desires to leave the club - with Liverpool his preferred destination. However - Newcastle have rejected Liverpool's bid of £110 million, with Newcastle's owners believed to be valuing the striker at a figure closer to £150 million. Isak's omission from Newcastle's opening game of the season proved crucial - as they struggled upfront en route to a drab 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. Sky Bet favourites to win the 2025-26 Premier League: Liverpool 7/4 Arsenal 15/8 Manchester City 11/4 Chelsea 9/1 Manchester United 25/1 Tottenham 40/1 Newcastle 66/1
